Shylock and the Magic Manor

[In Shylock’s room]

Akira: Shylock, you’ve been to the Magic Manor many times before, right?

Shylock: Yes. I always paid a visit to the Manor before the battle with the Great Calamity.

Akira: Do you have any special memory about this place?

Shylock: Your question brings the faces of people whom I will never meet again to my mind. Some Sage’s Wizards have always been around, but the group has changed a lot with the times.

Shylock: Once there was a wizard who looked at the carvings on the gate of a newly renovated Magic Manor and was delighted by the elegant and innovative design. Then a few decades later, another wizard arrived, looked at the same carvings, and found them hackneyed and boorish. And yet some more decades passed, when someone young came by and commented that those same carvings were cool in a retro way.

Shylock: Though the object is the same, fashion changes with the time, so the value ascribed to certain values also changes. I never intend to change, however, there have been people who call me youthful.

Akira: Have you been called an elderly?

Shylock: …….

Akira: Ah, please don’t misunderstand me! That isn’t what I mean! I just wonder if there's anyone who would make such a comment to you!

Shylock: *chuckles* I’ve also been said to be calm and mature.

Akira: I see!

Akira: On the other hand, you certainly seem calm and mature at first glance, but you’re really…

Shylock: I’m really what?

Akira: There’re times you’re playful like a mischievous child too.

Shylock: Oh my, that’s lovely to hear.

Akira: Is that the influence from the cat-like Murr? Or is that an aspect of your personality all this time?

Shylock: Well, who knows. My teenaged self was probably on the straight-laced, overly serious side. On the other hand, like with the gate we talked about earlier, the value attached to me changes with the times. Perhaps the me who exists in this ever breaking world is always the same, but in the past, people viewed me as a naïve and earnest youth.

Akira: (It’d be fun to experience the era when Shylock is considered naïve).

Murr and the Magic Manor

[In Murr’s room]

Akira: You’ve been to the Magic Manor many times before, right?

Murr: Yeah~!

Akira: Do you remember anything about this place?

Murr: U-hm…. I forgot everything!

Akira: I- I see. Don’t you have any clear flash of recollection either?

Murr: U-hm, I was happy!

Akira: You were happy?

Murr: I was summoned to be a Sage’s Wizard! My beloved moon! The Great Calamity! I was sad that I of all people wasn’t chosen to be in the company of wizards to whom the special crest granted by the Great Calamity appeared, so I was overjoyed when I was chosen!

Akira: I- I see. I’m glad for you. In that case, you first came to the Magic Manor after you became a Sage’s Wizard?

Murr: Nope! I had been here before that! Why those people were chosen but not me? Were there some kind of conditions for the selection? With those questions in mind, I came here to collect biological materials for research from the Sage’s Wizards. The ones present were all wizards, so they were absurdly averse to that idea, making it impossible to carry out.

Akira: Oh, so they refused to hand over their blood or hair. In any case, did you find out what the conditions for being summoned were?

Murr: N-o id-ea! I forgot about that already!

Chloe and the Magic Manor

[In Chloe’s room]

Akira: Chloe, have you been to the Magic Manor before?

Chloe: No, this is the first time I’ve been here! Also the first time I learnt that there’s such a place like the Magic Manor or that a crest appears too. From now on, there’ll be lots of training here for the battle against the Great Calamity, right?! I’ll try my best! Let’s work hard together, Master Sage!

Akira: Sure!

Chloe: It’s certainly exciting that there are many wizards at the Magic Manor! Perhaps I’ll simply die when I least expect it. Earlier I met Mithra…..

Akira: You nearly died together with Mithra?! Are you okay?!

Chloe: I’m fine, I’m fine. Mithra is so tall and dashing, isn’t he? But I found it scary to strike a conversation with a Northern wizard like him, so I just discreetly watched him from a distance. When I was lost in thought about the kind of outfit that would suit him, he suddenly appeared in front of me and asked what I was staring at as he placed a leg on the table.

Akira: (It’s like he got on the wrong side of a delinquent. If it were me I would simply cry)

Chloe: But when I talked directly with him, we had a fun chat about outfits.

Akira: Heh, that’s unexpected!

Chloe: Mithra said he had a spare outfit lying around that I could try and brought it out.

Akira: What kind of outfit is that?

Chloe: An enchanted outfit that absorbs the magical power of your opponent and increases your defense.

Akira: Oh. Did you try it on?

Chloe: No, I didn’t manage to. Rustica, Shylock, and Faust all came barging in. They said that outfit may be fine for Mithra, but I’d die if I put it on.

Akira: I’m so glad you’re okay!

Chloe: So there’re all kinds of outfits in the world! I’d like to see more of them!

Rustica and the Magic Manor

[In Rustica’s room]

Akira: Rustica, have you been to the Magic Manor before?

Rustica: Hmm, I wonder. I don’t remember. I have travelled for a long time, so maybe I’ve had the occasion to stop by this place.

Akira: Oh. You wizards live for a long time, right?

Rustica: That’s right. What about you, Master Sage? Have you gotten used to life in the Magic Manor yet?

Akira: I have, thanks to everyone. You are all so kind and the life here is lively, so it’s fun for me.

Rustica: I’m glad to hear that. There’s nothing I wish for more than you feeling at ease in your everyday life here. Even so, from time to time, there must be nights when loneliness comes to you, just like there are sunny days and rainy days. In times like that, please feel free to call on me.

Akira: Rustica…

Rustica: I am a decent musician and an even better conversationalist. If the friends I met here at the Magic Manor or you wish for a recital, I’ll be happy to make use of my skills. Allow me the honor of being by your side, Master Sage.

Akira: Thank you. Your words made me feel lighter. I do have anxiety occasionally. In such moments, please let me talk to you and listen to your music.

Rustica: I’ll be delighted to.

Rustica: It’s decided then. Let’s come up what to do for a party right now, for the occasions when we get lonely.

Akira: A party?

Rustica: Yes. That way, we will be able to welcome even the darkest of nights, don’t you think?

Akira: Ahaha! That’s interesting! In that case, let’s make a spread of cakes and eat a lot of sweets.

Rustica: Delightful. We’ll need Nero’s help in that case. Any other idea?

Akira: I’d like to fall asleep while spreading out on the bed and being surrounded by cats!

Rustica: That will require the cooperation of the cats and Owen. Anything else?

Card story: Tonight’s Sweet, Peculiar Dance Party

Cain: Look, Master Sage. There’s a marshmallow couch here.

Akira: Indeed. It seems really fluffy. Must feel nice to sit on it.

After taking a break from investigating the candy house, Cain and I had a stroll around the place.

Cain: Huh, one of the rooms in the corner over there has its door open.

Akira: Yeah. There seems to be the sound of music as well?

Cain: Shall we go there and have a look? Please stay close to me just in case.

We cautiously walked down the hallway. As we peered inside, what we saw was –

Cain – Akira: ?

A chocolate cake with delicate limbs, surrounded by similarly leggy confections, were dancing gracefully.

Cain: What’s going on here?

Rustica: Master Sage, Cain, welcome to tonight’s dance party of our cake and candy friends here.

Akira: Oh it’s you, Rustica.

From a spacious corner, Rustica made an elegant bow as he saw us. He had been playing music on a piano painted with colorful whipped cream.

Cain: Oh, so the music we were hearing was from you? It was you who left the door open too, right?

Rustica: Yes, because I’d like to invite you and Master Sage to this dance party. Oh, how forgetful of me. Allow me to introduce you. The one who danced so beautifully just now is Count Gateau Chocolat.

The chocolate cake that had grown limbs made a refined bow to us, who were gaping.

Cain: Uhm, I just want to check, but these confections with arms and legs are your magic’s doing, right?

Rustica: Yes, they were the confections that decorated this room, but they did me a favor and became the guests of this dance party to welcome you and Master Sage.

Akira: A dance party?

Rustica: Yes, I would love it if you can enjoy a wonderous dance party with these sweet revelers in this wonderous house made of sugary treats.

Cain: Haha, I see. It’s very like you to arrange such a welcome.

Akira: How delightful. Thank you so much, Rustica.

Rustica: The pleasure is mine. Well then, would you like to have a dance?

Cain: Sure. I’d love to!

Akira: I’d love to too, but I’m not confident about my dancing.

Rustica: In that case, I’ll entrust you to Count Gateau Chocolat. As you have seen, he’s an accomplished dancer.

As Rustica gave Count Gateau Chocolat a look, the Count bowed to me and offered his hand for the dance.

Rustica: And your partner, Cain, will be the Lady Macaron. What do you think?

Cain: I’d be delighted to. There’s something I’d like to say though. Since the lady is so tiny, maybe I’ll end up stepping on her when we dance.

Akira: Our cake and candy friends here certainly have the same sizes as regular confections.

Rustica: Well, let’s do it this way then. Amorest Viesse.

Akira: Whoa!

Cain: Lady Macaron and her friends are getting bigger.

After a moment, our sugary friends, still wearing their sugary faces, donned suits and dresses and became just like aristocrats of a refined court.

Rustica: Everyone will be able to enjoy dancing to their hearts’ content like this, I hope.

The Count Gateau Chocolat, now in human size, offered me his hand again. I nervously took it.

Akira: Ah, uhm, I look forward to the dance.

Cain: I should start too. Lady Macaron, may I have your hand?

Rustica: My esteemed guests, please enjoy this special one-in-a-lifetime night.

Thus we danced in sync with the melody Rustica performed.

Akira: (This is so fun! Count Gateau Chocolat is so good at dancing that even I can dance properly.)

Cain: What a nice tune! It gives me the feeling like I’m eating some sweet treats.

All of us danced round and round to the brightly light music. The party was filled with gaiety as the skirts of the confection ladies’ dresses swirled gracefully like blooming flowers.

Akira: (I’d never expect that one day I’d dance with cakes and candies like this though. It’s really like Rustica to create a delightful time that moves the heart out of something unexpected.)

Rustica: *chuckles* Master Sage, Cain, everyone is dancing so beautifully. Allow me to perform this song next.

Akira: (Oh, this melody is light and fluffy too, but there is a playful coquetry to it.)

Cain: I see. Somehow I get a craving for tea. Rustica, what is this song called?

Rustica: This song was written with the image of soft meringue and whipped cream.

Cain – Akira: So that’s what it is!

Before we knew it, we switched partners as we spinned along to Rustica’s music. The party became even more lively.

Rustica: Master Sage, the treasured daughter of the Viscount Pudding would like to be your partner.

Akira: Understood! Miss Pudding, I’m delighted.

Cain: I’m a bit envious of her, getting to dance with Master Sage like that.

We danced like that through countless songs. Then-

Akira: (Oh, I just realize…)

Akira: Excuse me, Rustica.

Rustica: Oh Master Sage? It seems you have a song request?

Akira: No, that’s not it. Rustica, would you like to dance with us too? I just thought it would be fun to dance with you. There’s no pressure though. Please don’t mind me if you prefer to play music instead.

Rustica: It’s no trouble at all. Since it’s your invitation, I’ll be delighted to dance. Let’s entrust our next song to Kapellmeister Blanchemange.

Cain: Oh, Rustica is dancing. In that case, how about you partnering with him for the next song, Master Sage?

Akira: Me?

Cain: It was you who invited him to dance, right? You didn’t even say ‘may I have your hand’ to him though.

Rustica: That’s a wonderful idea! I look forward to our dance, Master Sage.

Akira: U- understood! I’ll try my best! Let me do it again then. May I have your hand, Rustica?

Rustica: I’ll be delighted to!

As Rustica placed his warm hand on mine, gentle music began to fill the room. I led him with leisurely steps as we enjoyed this precious moment together.

Rustica: You granted me a great honor by inviting me, Master Sage. Thank you for this beautiful time that makes my heart dance.

Akira: It’s me who should thank you. Because you opened this dance party, I got to enjoy dancing with the magical confections and with you too.

Rustica: In that case, I should thank the me of that time when I came up with the idea of a dance party with the cakes and candies too.

Akira: Oh, so you thought of opening a dance party just as you spotted us?

Rustica: Yes. It happened that I was setting out tea and teapot in this room. ….Ah, I just remember.

Akira: Remember? What about?

Rustica: I was preparing a tea party when the idea of a dance party came to me. The idea of inviting you and Cain to my dance party made me so excited that I forgot about that.

Akira: Ahaha, that’s really like you, Rustica.

Rustica: Thanks to that, I made the wonderful memory of being invited to a dance by you, Master Sage. I’ll have a tea party again sometime later. Allow me to invite you as an expression of my gratitude for today.

Card story: While Waiting for a Dear Friend

Akira: Whoa! What’s going on here?

One afternoon, as I went outside to have a walk, I unexpectedly came across a huge bed.

Rustica: *Yawns* Good day, Master Sage.

Akira: Rustica?! Why is this bed here?

Rustica: I was having a nap.

Akira: A nap?

Rustica: The weather is lovely today. I was tempted by sleep as I enjoyed the warm sunlight.

Akira: (So that’s why he brought the bed from his room. What a bold way to take a nap.)

Akira: I was a bit surprised, but it seems enjoyable to have your bed under the open sky. Oh, Chloe isn’t with you? Usually you’d enjoy something like this with him.

Rustica: Chloe is shopping at the market today. He smiled like a blooming flower before he left, because the trip was in the company of Rutile and Heathcliff.

Akira: I see. It feels a bit strange to see you alone because you two are always together.

Rustica: *chuckles* I feel the same. While Chloe and I are close, since arriving here at the Manor, he has made many friends.

Akira: Chloe has been very enthusiastic about that, hasn’t he.

As Rustica cast his spell, table and chairs, a tea set, tea and confections appeared one by one. They danced around as the tea party was being set up. It was such a beautiful sight that it made one’s heart dance too.

Rustica: Apologies for making you wait, Master Sage. Please take a seat.

Akira: Thank you. Huh? Uhm.. This chair, isn’t it still floating? Eh, the table too? Rustica, the preparation isn’t done yet, is it?

Rustica: On the contrary, everything is ready.

Akira: Eh?

Rustica: You had a good time watching the table and chairs dance, didn’t you. I think you too enjoy spinning round and round with them. How do you find that?

Akira: I- I see. It seems fun, but aren’t they moving a bit too much for a tea party?

Rustica: In that case, let’s change to a calmer, minuet tempo then.

With a gentle swaying rhythm, the table and chairs spun around in the forest with we sitting on them.

Rustica: Your delight is my honor, Master Sage. I too have a lot of fun watching how your smile changes with the movement.

[Meowing sound]

Akira: Oh, a cat. It’s rare to see them this far into the forest. Kitty, kitty, come here. Do you come here to join Rustica’s tea party too?

Rustica: You’re amazing, Master Sage. You understand them so well.

Akira: Eh, is that really the case?

Rustica: Everyone would like to join a tea party after all. I have had the occasion to welcome many guests to my tea parties. Cats, birds, frogs transforming into beautiful women, and so on.

Akira: Frogs transforming into beauties?

Rustica: Yes, Shylock transformed them with magic. From time to time he and I play such games with each other.

Rustica: Hmm, maybe.

Akira: Eh, maybe what?!

Rustica: I am thinking about whether I would have searched for a frog and transformed it with my magic or not, hearing that from you.

Akira: Which one is it then!

[Late afternoon in the forest]

Akira: Rustica, thank you for the wonderful tea party.

Rustica: It’s me who should thank you. I got to spend my time in an unexpectedly delightful manner all thanks to you. Master Sage, may I request you to accompany me for a little while longer?

As he said that, Rustica produced his broom with his magic. He bowed to me in perfect form with utmost courtesy and offered me his hand.

Rustica: Let’s have a walk together under this blazing sky.

From Rustica’s broom, the Magic Manor, clad in the light of the sunset, made a beautiful sight.

Akira: It was fun floating around with the table and chairs, but flying on a broom feels so great.

Rustica: I’m glad to see you so delighted. Is the wind too cold for you?

Akira: Not at all!

Rustica: All is well then. I love watching the sunset like this. Just as I wonder if it transformed into a warm orange color, it becomes a majestic yellow. Then a deep blue wraps around the sky and ushers in the countless stars. I never get tired of it now matter how many times I’ve seen it before.

A little while later, the beautiful scenery changed in front of my eyes just as he described. In that moment, there was the sound of cheerful humming from behind me.

Akira: Beautiful. Is that a song you wrote?

Rustica: Yes. I’d like to turn the events of today into a song as a present for Chloe.

Akira: Whoa, that’s nice! Chloe will certainly love it. Oh, speak of the devil. Look, there’re three people flying on brooms over there. That’s Chloe and the others, isn’t it? Looks like they’re on the way home.

Rustica: Indeed.

Akira: Rustica, you look so happy.

The soft smile that appeared as soon as he saw Chloe spoke volumes of his feelings. Chloe too looked at our direction and waved his arm energetically.

Rustica: *chuckles* Suddenly I’m imagining how my dear friend will say ‘I’m home’. And then I will get to hear many stories from Chloe about his day, which was full of joy. In return, I will tell him about the wonderful time I spent with you, Master Sage. Including how you thought I transformed a frog into a cat too.

Card episode: To Spend One’s Day-Off Audaciously

Akira: Thank you for spending your free time with me the other day.

Rustica: The pleasure is mine. Thanks to you, it became a wonderful day.

Akira: That’s how you spent time with me. If it’s with Chloe, what do you do on your day off?

Rustica: *chuckles* There’re so many things I don’t know what to say. I think I will take my time and enjoy tea with Chloe from morning to evening. About what we’ll do, talking with each other the whole day would be nice.

Akira: (That’s so Rustica. That’s a bold way to use one’s time)

Rustica: We already have plans for our next day off though.

Akira: Oh, is that so.

Rustica: Chloe found beautiful fabrics when he went to the market the other day, so he made matching clothes for us. We’ve been talking about how we will wear those outfits to the market the next time we have a day off.

Akira: That’s a wonderful idea! Also, having matching clothes is like Snow and White. Please show me when you two wear such outfits.

Rustica: I’ll be glad to. Before we go out, Chloe and I will pass by your room. We will move in sync just like Master Snow and Master White too. We will make sure to practice a lot before then.
