Short stories by Tsushimi-sensei
- Seventh Material (Anniversary Fanbook 1)
The great charm of Mahoutsukai no Yakusoku lies in the vivid worldviews from the five countries with different natural conditions and cultures, as well as the delicate portrayal of the characters’ inner lives together with the relationships that are in the process of changing. An element in the story that leaves an impression is the variety of foodstuffs and dishes unique to the world of the story. From time to time, the food is the key to understanding the setting the characters are in or acts as the symbol of their closeness. Today, we have the pleasure of having a conversation with Scenario Writer Tsushimi Bunta, who breathes life into their creation with profound storytelling and exquisite portrayal of psychology.
***
Q: The way the food in Mahoutsukai no Yakusoku is portrayed in vivid details leaves a deep impression on us. Is that something you set out to do as you write the story?
A: That is something I pay attention to so that the tastes and preferences of the characters come out clearly in my portrayal of them. The wizards can use magic to control their surroundings and the temperature, so I think that among “clothing, food, and home”, “food” as an element to maintain life is especially suitable to bring out the wizards’ personality.
Q: We can sense that food has been deployed effectively in portraying the characters’ relationship with each other, such as how Riquet and Nero grew close to each other with each meal or the extreme sweet tooth of the fearsome Northern wizard Owen. Is there anything you pay special attention to when you write ‘food’?
A: Northern wizards are powerful beings who give off the impression of apex predators, so I portray their table manners to be on the wild side and a bit messy. The world the characters live in is different from modern Japan. There is no lighting or smartphone, so nighttime is inconvenient and boring for them. Their entertainment would be things like alcohol, dining, and music. In this setting, I place a high importance on elements like ‘the joy of eating’ or ‘the desire for food’ within the overall worldbuilding.
Q: Over and over again, the importance of food is displayed in details like the traces of the previous Sage’s effort in recreating the flavours of his homeland Japan with the ingredients of another world, or how Bradley values Nero’s food highly, saying that ‘Food is just like medicine.’ It is said that ‘Good food is vital in humans’ adaptation to their environment’. What is your personal opinion about that?
A: I feel that a person’s morale would be down if they cannot get used to what they eat. Imagine if you have to stay for a long time in a place where you can’t handle the food. Even people who love travelling abroad often talk about the relief they feel when they tuck in a meal of Japanese food.
Q: What is your thought process when you portray the characters’ tastes in food?
A: I think of what they would consider a delicacy given the countries they were born and grew up in.
Column: About ‘delicacy’ in the world of Mahoyaku
Which food ingredients or dishes would be considered ‘delicacy’ would be largely influenced by the circumstances each country is in. For example, a country where it is hard to find food because of harsh and cold climate on top of infertile land would have a different idea of valuable food and accordingly what is a ‘delicacy’ versus a country where food is abundant thanks to fertile land. Besides that, there is a certain limit to the transportation between the countries, so it is difficult to obtain the ingredients from faraway locations.
Q: It makes sense that what the characters like would vary depending on the country they were born and grew up in. How do you bring out the differences in the culinary cultures of the five countries?
A: I think of the real life countries to use as references for each country in the story. For example, Southern Country would give off the ambience of a hypothetical Spain or Turkey without sea. Then I elaborate further from that rough image of a locality that is very different from Japan and does not have an abundance of water.
Q: Cooking methods and culinary cultures vary with the era in history too. Besides the differences between the countries, is it conceivable that there would be a generation gap when it comes to food too?
A: I think it would often happen that some food ingredients were eaten in the past but then the custom of eating them was lost or they disappeared and could no longer be found. For the wizards, they may often obtain food ingredients from the humans, but they may also want to be 100% self-sufficient or they live fully on mana stones. As such, they may be left behind as the culture changes.
Q: Is there any food ingredient or dish in the story that you would like to try in real life?
A: That would be the ‘fruit of moonlight tree’, which makes your body glow when you eat it, and the ‘Rapunzel bean’, which has the effect of making your hair grow.
Q: Besides Cain, who ‘deep fries everything’, and Nero the chef, there are some scenes that depict the cooking prowess of the characters. Are there characters you think of as ‘good at cooking’ or ‘bad at cooking’?
A: On one end, I think Mithra, Owen, and Rustica would be bad at cooking. Oz has been improving but in the beginning he didn’t know how to cook either. Shylock serves food at his bar so he should be good at cooking to an extent. However, the chef par excellence is Nero who is obsessive over flavours and has many years of cooking experience under his belt.
- Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the topic of food, through which we have gained a deeper understanding of the world of ‘Mahoutsukai no Yakusoku’. The cuisine is certainly a beautiful garnish to a great story.
Card story: A Day at the Amusement Park of Wonders With You
[In the hallway]
Akira: (Where can Cain be? He isn’t in his room or the lounge. Ah!)
[In the dining room]
Mithra: Is that all?
Cain: One last question. So it was only you and Master Sage inside that place?
Akira: What about me?
Cain: Master Sage! Since when have you been listening on us?
Akira: I’ve just arrived. Cain, I’m looking for you. Are you two having snacks together?
Cain: That’s right. Do you need me for something?
Akira: Yeah, it’s your birthday soon so I’d like to hand you the invitation to the Amusement Park of Wonders.
Mithra: In that case, you come at the right time. Please explain everything to him.
Akira: Eh?
Cain: !
Mithra: He has been bugging me non-stop about what kind of place it is and so on. Not just me, other wizards too.
Cain: Mithra, Mithra! Come, take the rest of my snacks too. Thanks for spending time with me.
Mithra: Well, you’re welcome.
Cain: Phew. Sorry for interrupting the conversation, Master Sage.
Akira: I don’t mind. So you two were talking about the amusement park.
Cain: Yeah, Arthur and the others told me about that place so I’ve been curious. So it’s a miniature park that an old friend of Shylock left behind?
Akira: That’s right. Shylock’s friend was having trouble maintaining the amusement park so it was entrusted to Shylock, and I borrow it from him.
Akira: Anyway, I’d like to invite you to the amusement park to celebrate your birthday. Is that OK?
Cain: Sure! Thank you, Master Sage.
[In Cain’s room]
Finally, the day I planned to treat Cain to the amusement park trip had come.
Cain: Did you make the invitation card yourself? It’s covered with things I love. Amazing. You certainly know me well, Master Sage.
Akira: Ahaha, I’m glad to hear that.
Cain: So, the gate of the amusement park will open if I cast magic on this card, right? Well then…
Cain: Gladius procella.
When the invitation card gave off a bright light, the gate slowly opened. Then a curtain of white fog covered us.
[At the amusement park]
Cain: Wow, what a place! Everything here is new to me. This outfit too… From what I heard, the amusement park grants each visitor their own unique looks. Is that right?
Akira: Yes! This outfit really suits you, Cain.
Cain: Ahaha, nice! It would be a shame to dress sloppily on this special trip with you as my guide.
I instinctively smiled in response to Cain’s cheerful face. Even so, I assumed a different air and straightened my back as best as I could. Before we came here, I had practiced the correct posture for offering to accompany someone. Picturing that in mind, I took a deep breath.
Akira: Cain, this is sudden but allow me to be your guide through the amusement park. Your hand, p-please!
Cain: ….
Akira: (…I messed up)
Cain: Ahaha! What a wonderful invitation. Thank you, Master Sage.
Akira: I’d like the earth to open up and swallow me now.
Cain: I’d be in a bind if my guide disappears, you know. So, please lead the way, Master Sage.
As he said that, Cain gently placed his hand onto the hand I held out to him. The warmth from Cain’s hand softly melted away my embarrassment from failure as well as my nerves.
Akira: Thank you, Cain.
Akira: Let me show you around the area then! First is the roller coaster-like attraction. Uhm, I thought you’d love to be on something that went very fast.
Cain: Arthur told me about riding a floating wheel down a stream. Is it this one? He said it was really fun.
Akira: There’s some similarity but we won’t go down a stream here. Instead, this one will run round and round through a volcano.
Cain: Going through a volcano at great speed. That sounds great!
Thus chatting, we arrived at our destination in no time.
Cain: A mountain full of little flowers? Ah no, that’s flame coming from the peak. Is this the volcano you talked about earlier?
Akira: That’s the one! We’ll get on the basket made of vines over there. There’re many lightning fast vehicles here but let’s use that one first!
[In the air]
Cain: Oooh the vehicle is going up the slope! But it isn’t that fast so far, I think?
Akira: It’ll likely speed up later! To tell the truth, today is my first time riding this too so I’ve no idea when the speed will increase.
I already knew what it was like to ride a roller coaster, so when Shylock talked about this attraction, I only thought that it was something I could enjoy with Cain but didn’t try it out.
[A while later]
Akira: Aaaaaah!!! We’re falling!!!
Cain: Ahaha, that was an impressive scream! It does seem fun to scream your lungs out when on the ride like that.
Just as I thought that the basket made of vines we were in would charge into the blazing crater, it suddenly changed direction and turned in the direction of the mountain’s surface as the flame grazed over us. One would know the route of a normal roller coaster thanks to the rail, but there was no way to guess where this basket, which moved on its own with magic, would go next.
Akira: I- I certainly screamed my heart out, I suppose. Cain, we’re seated firmly in the basket but you are really not holding on anything when it’s going so fast?
Cain: It’s more fun this way. Look, Master Sage, we’re getting to the cliff of illusion next. Oh, seems like we’re going down the magma lake again! This time I’ll join you.
Cain: Wooooot!
Akira: Aaaaah!
[On the ground]
Cain: Aah! That was awesome.
Akira: Y- you still have so much energy although you rode that course ten times already!
Cain: Ahaha, I can continue as long as I still find it fun.
Akira: (He’s so powerful. But I’m glad he seems to have played to his heart’s content)
I glanced at Cain’s face as happy thoughts filled my mind. Cain suddenly stood up and looked into my eyes.
Cain: Master Sage, could you spare me some time?
Akira: Huh? Yes, of course.
Cain placed his hand on his chest. With all of his sincere and knightly grace, he made a bow to me.
Cain: Master Sage, today you have given me the wonderful present of an unforgettably enjoyable time. You have my gratitude for that. Thanks to you, I have the chance to experience a day full of happiness. Allow me to return that favor.
With those words, Cain gave me a white envelope. I couldn’t read what was written on the envelope but I could guess what it was.
Akira: This is for me?
Cain: Yes, Master Sage. It is an invitation for you.
Then he knelt down on one knee and courteously held out his hand to me.
Cain: It is my turn to bring you happiness as much as what I have received from you. Allow me to be your guide on a magnificent tour that will make you radiant with joy.
I couldn’t help but smile at his straightforward gaze and his confident words and act.
Akira: (I’m really no match for Cain)
Akira: I will avail myself of your offer then!
Just as I said so, countless petals fluttered around us. Cain and I looked at each other then looked up at the ceiling.
Cain: So beautiful. Is this the sign that it’s time to go home?
Akira: Yes, it is. I was told that when the wizard is content from the bottom of their heart, the flower petals will come pouring down.
As we talked, fog wrapped around us.
[In Cain’s room]
When we could see again, we were back at the Magic Manor.
Akira: Oh, we’re back. I’m really glad you had a good time at the amusement park!
Cain: Yeah, I had tons of fun! Thanks, Master Sage. To tell the truth though, I was anxious the whole time, wondering about what I should do after the tour, even though I already asked Mithra and the others to prepare a surprise.
Cain: Just as I was about to have fun as your guide, the amusement park immediately closed. That didn’t work out, I suppose.
Akira: (I see. So he asked the other wizards about the amusement park to think of a surprise for me)
My heart felt all warm as Cain laughed and joked. At the same time, the thought of delighting him one more time as the day closed came to me.
I squeezed Cain’s hand, and there was a bit of confusion on his face.
Akira: (There’re so many things I’d like to tell him. Even so…)
Akira: Cain, one more time, happy birthday to you! May you have a year full of smiles and happiness.
I was no match for Cain in gallantry but I did my best to bow gracefully to him.
My words had no miraculous power, but I poured my wish into them that hopefully like a seed that someday would grow into a flower or the magic that turned a stone into jewel, they would become a blessing and protect his heart.
Akira: That was one last surprise present from me. What do you think? I pulled it off better than before, right?
Cain: ….
Cain: Yeah! You were really dashing, Akira!
Card episode: The Present that Sketches out the Future
Akira: Hey Cain, what are you reading?
Cain: Oh, it’s you, Master Sage. Have a look! Isn’t it great?! This is my birthday present from the Central Wizards.
Akira: Wow! Is that a handmade book?
Cain: Yeah, the story is about a wizard who becomes a knight. Apparently Riquet wanted to try his hand at creating a book so they came up with the plan.
Cain: Arthur told me, ‘This is you in the future’. And suddenly my eyes grew all hot.
Akira: That sounds wonderful.
Cain: They told me that since they weren’t professional writers, they added illustrations so that the story is easy to understand. Like the one here.
Akira: I see! So the gallant boy here should be you? I wonder who drew him. Can it be… Oz?
Cain: Ah no, I think this is by Arthur. The character looks really dashing, doesn’t he? By the way, Riquet drew the blocky images and Oz did the sceneries.
Akira: Ahaha, upon closer look, the arts are indeed full of personalities.
Cain: I know, right? Oh, excuse me, it’s time for me to go.
Akira: Do you have plan for something?
Cain: Yeah, Owen told me he has a birthday present for me so I should come by his room. Honestly, I don’t have a good feeling about that.
Akira: (Yeah, it’s certainly a bit unusual)
Cain: Anyway, I can’t make light of his feelings either, so I’ll go. See you!
[Sound of footsteps]
Akira: (Since Owen knows Cain would come if he asks, so whether he has bad intention or not, what matters is he did ask, I guess)
Card story: A champion in tickling
Cain: ……..
Lennox: Cain
Cain: Hi, Lennox! Do you need me for something?
Lennox: Not really… It’s just, you seem to have something on your mind.
Cain: !
Cain: Sorry for making you worry. Did I look that serious?
Lennox: Well, to tell the truth, you seemed to be staring into the distant at some faraway place.
Cain: Haha, I can’t hide anything from you, I see. As we prepare for the banquet, many memories about the comrades who fought alongside me in the previous round of the Calamity come back.
Cain: Jeez, I should be more careful. Arthur and the others would get worried if I go around wearing that face.
Lennox: In that case, I’d love to hear about a happy memory you have with your comrades if that’s fine with you.
Cain: You want to hear me talk about the past?
Lennox: Yeah. Our current mission somehow makes us think a lot about our friends and allies, doesn’t it? There’s no need to force yourself to act like normal. But if your kindness makes you think that’s what you should do, then perhaps instead of trying to ward off your thoughts, it’d be more helpful to share a memory that brings a smile to your face.
Cain: ….. Thanks, Lennox.
Lennox: No need to thank me. I myself have memories like that about my comrades in the past too.
Cain: I see. In that case, I shall bend your ears then. It’s nothing special though.
[A while later]
Lennox: A tickling technique?
Cain: Yeah, most people would burst out laughing when you tickle their sides like this. With this trick, you can soothe the general mood when someone is depressed or when it gets tense in the team.
Lennox: That’s… quite impressive.
Cain: I know, right? It may not work on you though, but you tickle the sides like this.
Lennox: !
Lennox: Heh
Cain: Oh, you laughed!
Lennox: Haha, so there’s a rhythm to tickling too. Just a little change to the touch of the fingertips made me so ticklish.
Lennox: What an amazing technique. I think this way you’ll make your new comrades smile too.
Cain: Lennox, I tend to get maudlin when I think about my past comrades, but like you said, it’s better to remember them with a smile.
Lennox: Your usual cheer has returned, I see.
Cain: Thanks to you, yeah! Hey, why are you reaching out like that? It can’t be…
Lennox: In return of earlier.
Cain: Hey, it tickles. Ahaha, you’re for real? Ahaha
Card episode: All kinds of conversation topics
[In the hallway]
Cain: Sorry for staying so long. See you!
Akira: Huh? Oh, hello Cain! Did you just have a chat with Lennox?
Cain: Oh, Master Sage. Lennox helped me a lot during our latest mission so I brought him a small gift to thank him. Then we talked and I got carried away.
Akira: Wow, now I’m curious. What did you two talk about that got you so absorbed?
Cain: When I’m with Lennox then the convo tends to drift to the topic of exercising. “It’s best to go training in the morning when the air is cool and clear.” “Yeah!” kind of mood, you know. Lennox knows many exercising methods that I don’t, so I often ask him to teach me one thing after another.
Akira: I see. I don’t exercise enough so I’d learn a lot from talking to Lennox and you, I suppose.
Cain: In that case, would you like to join us for tea next time?
Akira: May I? But wouldn’t it be a bother if I just listen and contribute nothing to the conversation though?
Cain: Ahaha, don’t worry about that. You’ll definitely be deep in talk with us soon enough. The conversation will get interesting because you’re around, you know. Let's talk about everything, not just exercising. I can’t wait to see what topic will come up!
Card story: Because You Are the Way You Are
Akira: Cain, this should be that magical fountain, right?
Cain: Nice view, isn’t it? People in this city say it grants wishes.
The Central wizards and I went to the magical fountain in the City of Glory to investigate a certain incident.
Riquet: There doesn’t seem to be anything unusual about the fountain. It’s simply clean and beautiful.
Arthur: According to Cain’s friend, people notice that objects that are reminiscent of Cain appear in the fountain every morning.
Cain: Yeah, things like toy swords, boots, or dolls shaped like me. All of them have human hair wrapped around them. That feels unsettling so my friend got worried and wrote to me.
Oz: It’s common practice to use part of the practitioner’s body as a medium in a curse or charm. Nothing worked because the ritual wasn’t performed correctly, but it’s obvious that there are multiple culprits who have tried to cast a curse on Cain.
Cain: A curse?
I shuddered at the unsettling exchange. At the same time, something didn’t really make sense to me so I shook my head.
Akira: I can’t imagine that there’s someone who would do that to Cain though. He’s so kind and friendly to everyone.
Riquet: That’s right. Cain often doesn’t pay enough attention to details, and he can be too rough when he ruffles my hair. But being with him always cheers me up even when he’s like that. He isn’t the kind of evil wizard that people would hate.
Arthur: That’s what I think too. Maybe it’s something opposite. Perhaps instead of hating Cain, someone likes him so much that they wish for him to like them, so they made that charm.
Cain: Hey that’s enough. You three are embarrassing me with those praises to high heaven. In any case, the issue is, no matter if that person did this charm thing out of good will or hatred, the magical fountain will curse them in exchange of granting their wish. We need to stop them for their own good too.
Arthur: Let’s ask around about the charm. Maybe we’ll learn something.
Akira: That’s a good idea. Let’s start by collecting more information.
[A while later]
Arthur: There is nothing unusual… I see… Even so it’s valuable information for us. Thank you for your time.
Cain: We’ll stay in town for a while so please tell us if you remember something.
Resident: Wait, that’s Cain, isn’t he?
Resident: For real? Since when has he been back?
Akira: (He’s popular with literally everyone like a celebrity as always)
As we gathered information, the stream of people striking a conversation with Cain or looking at him admiringly was endless everywhere we went. He was indescribably well-loved. Not letting on that he couldn’t see anyone, Cain responded to everyone with practiced ease.
Resident: Cain! Come by my restaurant if you have time!
Cain: Sorry, we’re in the middle of investigating an unusual incident. I’ll take my friends for a visit later.
Fortune teller: Oh my, aren’t you the handsome young man from that night? Nice to see you again. Will you give me the pleasure of divining your partner for tonight?
Riquet: You’re the fortune teller at the festival of the Serpents? Back there you said you would predict my love life for me.
Cain: Ah, that fortune teller! Sorry but I already know who I will spend the night with. Once we solve the curse incident, we’ll have a big party to celebrate.
Cain: Oh, there’s something I’d like to ask you. Do you happen to know something about the strange objects that are found at the magical fountain recently?
Fortune teller: Ah, that’s likely a love charm?
Arthur – Riquet – Akira: Eh.
Oz: Love charm?
Fortune teller: With this charm, you will find love with the person you fancy by wrapping your hair around something that belongs to the person in question and offering it to the fountain. But you’ll fail if that person finds out what you do.
Fortune teller: ‘Something that belongs to the person of your dream’ doesn’t have to be literally that person’s belonging though. Just something that represents the person to the caster of the charm is fine. The charm is simple so it’s currently the rage in town. People tell each other that their friends found love thanks to the charm and the whole city try it.
Arthur: I see. Then it should be someone harboring love for Cain who cast that charm.
Riquet: His Highness is right, it isn’t a curse!
Just as relief washed over me that the incident wasn’t something out of malice, I recalled the sight of people flocking to Cain earlier.
Akira: (Suddenly the number of suspects increase dramatically)
Cain: So we know the nature and the purpose of the charm now. The next step is to find the ones who attempt it and stop them. Let’s split up and ask around so we can cover more ground. I’ll go check the entertainment district. Will you join me, Master Sage?
Akira: Yes, of course.
Arthur: Leave the site over there to us. See you later.
[A while later]
Cain: Let’s start with the main street. There’re many young people around so maybe we’ll find some clue. Still, a love charm, huh. I’m from this city yet I don’t know anything about that.
Akira: It’s said that the charm would fail if the person in question finds out so maybe that’s an underground trend.
Cain: Probably. Also since I started living at the Magic Manor, it’s harder to keep up with the talks in the city.
Just as Cain shrugged, yet another passerby started small talk with him. He casually waved his hand back. Looking at his face, I couldn’t resist asking him.
Akira: When we find the person who casts the charm, will you return their feeling?
Cain: Nope, I’ll politely turn them down and tell them that I’m currently occupied with deepening the bond with my new allies in the battle with Calamity.
Cain answered my question without hesitation. Then he turned around and looked at me, who was walking by his side.
Cain: From that point of view, I suppose I understand how the caster of the charm feels. When we just met, if there had been a charm that helped me to become friends with you in an instant, I would be tempted to try it myself.
Akira: Ahaha, but you don’t need any charm like that though. You can be friends with anyone you just meet, right?
Cain: How about you then?
Akira: Eh?
Cain: If there were a magical charm that helped you to become my friend, would you try it?
Cain looked at me in the eyes and smiled mischievously.
Akira: Uhm, I wouldn’t try that charm, I think. Because I’ve liked you since we first met, I’d like to invest in the time and become friends with you with my own effort.
For some reason, Cain’s eyes widened a little. In that moment, two girls hugging toy swords carefully like they were precious to them passed by us. Curiously, the hair in the front of both girls was uneven.
Akira: Cain, those two just now seem about to attempt the charm! They’re holding toy swords.
Cain: There’re two of them?! What on earth? First thing first, let’s go after them!
Akira: Y- yes!
[In a café]
We resolved the charm incident without trouble. Afterwards, we went straight to a café in the City of Glory.
Arthur: In the end, the casters of the charm include the florist’s daughter, the daughter of the family at the crossroad, the third daughter of the baker. Who else…
Riquet: The grandchild of the shipwright and… Oh no, there’re more of them than I can count with my fingers.
Akira: I certainly didn’t expect that every day had a different batch of charm casters.
Oz: Why are there so many culprits?
Cain: Ahaha, knights are pretty popular, you know.
Akira: (I feel that’s definitely not the reason though.)
Cain: Anyway, thanks for helping me out. I’ll take it from here so please order anything you like.
Riquet: Nice! I’ll go pick something from what’s available in the display case. Your Highness, Oz, are you going with me?
Arthur: Sure!
Oz: Fine by me.
Riquet: Don’t worry, Oz. I’ll choose tasty treats for you too!
Cain: You don’t want to go with them? It’s my treat, don’t be shy. It’d be nice if you show some mercy for my wallet though.
Akira: Ahaha, I’ll definitely help myself to the cakes later, but I’d like something to drink first.
I soothed my throat that had gone dry from talking to so many people in our investigation with tea. Then I remembered the surprise on Cain’s face right before the two girls walked by us.
Akira: By the way, why were you so surprised when I answered your question about the charm to make friends?
Cain: Oh, that. I just thought that you must be pretty well loved by everyone.
Akira: I s-… What? Me?
Cain: Yes, you. You’re honest and always say what makes the other person happy without any calculation. I was embarrassed from being told something unexpected and couldn’t find my answer. You’re so charming like that, so all of us Sage’s Wizards love you.
This time, it was my turn to be at a loss for words from surprise.
Akira: ….
Cain: Akira?
Akira: If we go by that metrics, then you’re the same. I’m so embarrassed my face goes all hot.
Cain: Oh, looks like I manage to score a point. Let me get you some cool tea in return then.
Cain had already noticed that my cup was empty. He raised a hand and called a waiter for me. It was natural as breathing for him to be caring to other people like that. He definitely needed no magic or charm to make friends.
Akira: (Everyone loves Cain because he’s such a person, I think).
Card episode: The target of many people’s affection
Akira: Hi, Cain. Are you back from the Castle?
Cain: Hello, Master Sage.
Akira: Wow, so many candies! What happened?
Cain: The ladies at the Castle asked me to pass these to the Central wizards. I’m about to sort and deliver them.
Cain: Let’s see. ‘For the charmingly taciturn handsome gentleman’, so this should go to Oz. The one with ‘The cute boy with good posture’ is Riquet’s. These are all for His Highness.
Akira: That’s a lot! It’s like gifts for an idol on Valentines.
Cain: The kind of people who hate Sage’s Wizards are almost non-existent. Well, looks like many people are still hesitant to talk to the serious-looking Oz or the refined Riquet. And Arthur is royalty on top of being a wizard.
Akira: I see. So everyone entrusts their gifts to you because you’re easy to talk to and willing to pass them on.
Akira: (There’s still a wide gulf between wizards and humans, but I’m glad there are people who admire wizards so much)
Cain: And I’m done. I’ve checked these for poison so time to deliver them.
Akira: I’ll give you a hand!
Cain: That’d be great. Please take over that pile and this one for me then.
Akira: Got it. By the way, whom is that biggest pile for?
Cain: Hm? Oh, that’s for me.
Akira: (He doesn’t even bat an eye. Amazing)
Many thanks to twitter user makiharawataru for helping me with parsing the original Japanese. Other mistakes are mine.
Card story: What he said in that moment
Akira: (Wow the knight apprentices are all so passionate)
At the training ground where the swordplay examination to select knights was held, the candidates were diligently practicing in preparation for the actual duel. I spotted Owen in the midst of the swords clanging as they clashed with each other and the lively chatters of the knight apprentices. He was holding in his hand a sword of the type that the knights used.
Akira: Did you borrow that sword from someone, Owen?
Owen: Don’t be silly. I don’t borrow what I can seize. This sword was lying on the ground over there so I picked it up.
Akira: Over there… that would be the armory. It wasn’t lying around, right? Was it….
Knight apprentice: Hey, bro!
A lively voice cut in as I was talking.
Owen: What? You mean me?
Knight apprentice: Yes, you. You’re a knight candidate, aren’t you? Do you want to have a practice match before the real thing with me? You’re holding a sword already, right?
The person who talked to us with a bright smile was a youth who appeared to be a knight apprentice. He invited Owen to practice with a casual attitude.
Akira: (I suppose he mistook Owen for a knight apprentice because of that outfit)
Akira: Sorry, we aren’t going to take the swordplay……
Owen: Fine by me. I’ll spar with you.
Akira: Eh?!
Knight apprentice: Nice! I’ll wait for you over there then. Hurry!
[Sound of footsteps]
Owen: What was that reaction, Master Sage? And here I was all nice and gracious when I accepted his invitation.
Akira: I- I’m sorry. I didn’t expect that you’d accept so I blurted that out.
Akira: Uhm Owen. He’s just a human so please be hold back when you fight him.
Owen: Hmm, let’s see. There’s no fun or glory in killing that weakling of a human, but… Ah well, it’ll all depend on his behaviors, I suppose.
Knight apprentice: Hey, are you going to spar with me or not? If you keep dallying there, the exam will start before we can practice, you know.
Before I could say anything else, the knight apprentice impatiently called out to us. Leaving me behind, Owen headed in his direction.
Akira: (Does Owen even know how to wield a sword? His magic focus is a suitcase.)
Knight apprentice: Ready? Start!
Owen: …..
Akira: !
Knight apprentice: Heh, you look pretty haphazard waving that sword around but you’re doing pretty well!
Owen: And you are acting all high and mighty but your fighting is a mess. You seemed so confident when you challenged me, but apparently one stare is enough to make you keel over.
Knight apprentice: Haha, let’s wait and see!
[Sword fighting effect]
The knight apprentice breathed heavily as he fought with all his might. On the other side, Owen’s face was completely cool as he countered his opponent with his sword.
Akira: A- amazing.
Akira: (It’s hard to imagine Owen fighting with a sword, but he is pretty proficient with it!)
Oz: What’s going on there?
Akira: Oh, Oz! A knight apprentice asked Owen to spar with him.
As I explained the situation, Oz looked at the duel between Owen and the knight apprentice again.
Akira: That’s an impressive match, isn’t it? Owen carries himself so effortlessly graceful, while his opponent looks pretty agile too.
Oz: …….
[Sword fighting effect]
Knight apprentice: F- fuck!
Owen: Hey, are you really aiming at a spot in the Knights? What do you hope to protect with this level of skill? Livestock in a backwater village? Your favorite handbag? Looks like you won’t be able to manage even that in this state.
Knight apprentice: Argh, just watch me!
[Sword fighting effect]
Oz: That sword fighter is being killed off.
Akira: Eh?! B- but they are sparring pretty normally?
Oz: Not his body. I mean his heart. Owen’s words are confusing him and causing him to become sloppy. On top of that, it looks like Owen is using magic to amplify the speed and threatening aura of his attacks. A mere human can’t win against that.
[Sword fighting effect]
There was the sound of swords clashing repeatedly, so I looked at the duel. The knight apprentice was on one knee as he blocked Owen’s sword.
Owen: Oh, you manage to finally stop my attack? Come, launch your counter-attack? Where has your earlier swagger gone?
Knight apprentice: *breathes heavily* How come your sword is so heavy?
Owen: Haha, you should already know why though. It’s because your confidence is completely baseless.
Knight apprentice: Tsk, I’m capable of much more than this!
[Sword fighting effect]
The knight apprentice talked on as he pushed Owen’s sword aside.
Knight apprentice: I’m the best sword fighter in my hometown! I’ve made a name for myself with this sword….
Knight apprentice: When it comes to skills with the sword alone, I won’t lose to even that wizard who was Knight Captain Cain! I don't need some strange power to become a knight!
Owen: Heh.
As I wondered to myself if Owen had just narrowed his eyes bewitchingly, his attack became even faster as it charged at the knight apprentice.
Knight apprentice: Whoa!
Owen’s mismatched eyes stared fixedly at the knight apprentice, who had fallen on his backside on the ground.
Owen: Shall I be magnanimous and teach you something useful?
Owen: The wizard who defeated that Knight Captain was me. The left eye that is looking at you now originally belonged to him.
Knight captain: What….?!
Owen: Even if he doesn’t use his magic at all, there’s no way you can win against him.
With that as the parting shot, Owen raised the sword he had been holding in his hand.
Akira: Owen, wait!
Oz: Vox nox.
[Flash]
Faster than me calling out, Oz cast his spell. The sword Owen was swinging was blocked by an invisible wall.
Akira: Phew…
Owen: What’s the matter with you? It’s barbaric to barge into a sparring session, you know.
Oz: Don’t bully a human. There’s no way he could be a match for a sword boosted with magic.
Owen: I’m just teaching this sheltered little knight what reality is like by example. No need to look so scary, Master Oz.
Avoiding Oz’s gaze, Owen waved his sword to and fro. The knight apprentice, who was staring at them dumbfoundedly, slowly spoke up.
Knight apprentice: So you’re a wizard?
Owen: Oh, you finally realize that? No matter how hard you try, you have no other choice but to helplessly kneel in the face of my magic. The difference in power between wizards and humans has been set since our birth, you see.
Akira: O- Owen, that should be enough!
Knight apprentice: In that case, if I defeat you, I’ll become a super knight that surpasses Knight Captain Cain?!
Owen: What?
Akira: Eh?
The knight apprentice paid no attention to us, who were staring in shock. His eyes were radiant with hope.
Knight apprentice: I’m glad I asked you to spar! Here, let’s shake hands!
Owen: Hey, don’t touch me so willy-nilly. Urgh, you got mud all over me.
Knight apprentice: I’m more determined to achieve my goal more than ever thanks to you. I’ll definitely win in the exam. Mind coming here again sometime in the future? I’ll definitely become stronger than now. Bye!
[Sound of footsteps]
Akira: He’s gone already….
Owen: He was shaking in fear just a few seconds ago. Is everyone in Central Country like this?
Akira: Ahaha, they’re certainly very optimistic people.
Owen: So what? All they can do is flapping their gums. With skills like that, he will never make Knight Captain even if he trains for a hundred years.
Oz: You don’t know enough about swordplay to make such a verdict though.
Owen: *Sneers* I still know more than dullards who only blast things with brute force like you or Mithra. Unlike you lot, I know how to use my brain.
Oz: ………..
Raising his eyebrow slightly, Oz suddenly summoned his staff.
Akira: (The way things are going… Is he going to hit Owen with that? Or is he going to use magic? What would he do?!)
Akira: O- Oz, please put your staff away!
Right after that, Oz heard Cain calling for him and left. I was alone again with Owen.
Akira: Owen, thank you.
Owen: What? Why are you thanking me?
Akira: It’s for when you sparred with the knight apprentice. I could tell he was doubting Cain’s capability as a knight, even though Cain’s skills with the sword are first class even without magic. You said what you did to that knight apprentice because you were angry for Cain, right?
[Clanging sound]
Owen: You’re mistaken.
Akira: …..!
All of a sudden he pointed the sword at me. The words he had said earlier were sealed in his mismatched eyes that were shining sharper than even the blade.
Owen: Since you’re babbling nothing but stomach-churning nonsense, shall I give you a taste of reality too? How about me gouging out that bird-brained eye of yours like I did with Mister Knight?
Akira: Ehh…
The words flowing out of his thin lips were so terrifying that they would make me tremble in fear. However, perhaps because he had the same eyes as Cain, the Owen who wielded a sword and donning different from outfit from usual somehow looked knightly too.
Card episode: What he typically enjoyed
Akira: The training ground we went to was so lively. It felt nice to be there, didn’t it? The knight apprentices were all trying their best to achieve their goals. What do you think, Owen?
Owen: It was certainly quite fun there. I had a grand time coming up with ways to break it to those knight apprentices the reality that their dream wouldn’t never come true.
Akira: Uhm…
Owen: Yes, yes. They looked just like that. I had my fill laughing when I saw how confused and helpless they were when they listened to me.
Akira: (He is meaning a totally different thing from me? It’s just like him to do that though)
Akira: Oh, uhm, it was heartening to see the overflowing passion in their gazes, I think. They were radiating with ‘I’ll definitely do it’ aura. You know, we were dressing in the outfit of the knight apprentices too, so we got to see a lot of the emotions in their eyes.
Owen: Sure, that wasn’t half bad. Especially the lot who were looking me with distaste and resentment.
Akira: Eh?
Owen: Some of those knight apprentices definitely knew about me gouging Mister Knight’s eye, you see. They must be filled in unbearable fear and hatred of me. It was really funny how they stared fixedly at me.
Akira: I- I see. So that’s how it is for you.
Akira: (Owen is certainly in a good mood. He definitely doesn’t view things the same way as me, but it looks like he enjoyed being at the training ground too.)
Card story: The unexpected reunion
After the incident had been resolved, the swordplay examination started again without any problem. We watched the duels with interest. The two candidates who were battling were both Hector’s friends. They went to shake hands with us before the match started.
Mitile: Whoa! Mister Cain, did you see the move just now? He found the opening so quickly. That’s really cool.
Cain: Yeah, that’s some fine swordsmanship. He moved in deep and picked his target without hesitation. Even so, wait and see…
Akira: Oh! There is a mistake in his stance, which allows his opponent to find a weak spot.
Cain: Tactics is important in swordplay too. You use your sense and instinct to predict your opponent’s missteps, things like that. Those two have trained together regularly so they should know each other well. They’re showing their skills by finding ways to exploit the openings of a familiar opponent.
Mitile and I wiped the sweats on our hands as we listened to Cain’s explanation. Suddenly, someone cheered for the combatants loudly behind our back.
???: What kind of counterattack was that?! Put your back to it, won’t you?!
Cain: Huh? The person just now…
Cain turned around and scanned the crowd as if to look for something. Mitile asked.
Mitile: Mister Cain, what’s the matter?
Cain: I’m okay. Just that I think I heard the voice of someone who helped me a lot in the past.
???: The losers will have to wash dishes in my shop! You hear me!
Akira: Oh, it’s that person, right? He has wide shoulders and stocky build.
Mitile: He also has curly black hair, and it looks like there’s a big scar on his cheek.
Cain: Oh! Then he’s definitely my acquaintance. I didn’t expect to meet him here.
Mitile: In that case, shall we go to greet him after this match? I’ll show you the way!
Akira: I’ll go talk to him first then. Cain, it’s a big crowd here so please take your time and go with Mitile.
Cain: Thanks a lot, your two. Let me use this occasion to introduce you to him too.
Thus when the match was over, we took Cain’s hand and led him to the man in question, whom we had tracked down.
Cain: Hi there, Uncle.
The uncle whom Cain knew: Oh, it’s really you, Cain.
Cain: The one and only. It’s been a while! You seem well, Uncle.
The uncle whom Cain knew: I didn’t think I’d run into you here! I see you’ve grown up and become even more of a fine young man.
The uncle approached us with a bright smile and clapped Cain’s back heartily. Cain smiled in return of the familiar gesture.
Cain: Haha, I remember this pain. Uncle, here are my friends. Akira, who is our Sage, and Mitile, a Sage’s wizard like me.
Akira – Mitile: Nice to meet you!
The uncle whom Cain knew: Hi there! So you two have been taking care of the kiddo here. I run a small restaurant in City of Glory. I’ve known Cain since he was a little rascal. He used to climb on my shoulders, and I cooked for him when he got hungry, you see.
Cain: Yeah. I especially love Uncle’s thick meat sandwiches.
The uncle whom Cain knew: Oh, you mean this?
The uncle rummaged in his bag and pulled out a package. Inside it was a large sandwich made of thick bread full of fillings.
Akira: It looks delicious. Besides the cheese and egg, there’re many thick slices of meat too.
Mitile: The filling is certainly very generous. And the bread is toasted and gives off the scent of butter.
Cain: Oh, the sandwich looks fantastic as always. There’s nothing better than opening your mouth wide and biting into it heartily.
The uncle whom Cain knew: Lots of the kids taking the exam today are from the City of Glory. I see them often enough at my shop. Since they love this kind of sandwich, I want to treat them. Since luck lets us meet each other today, feel free to help yourselves to some, Mitile, Master Sage! There’re more than enough to go around!
Mitile – Akira: Eh? May I?
The uncle whom Cain knew: Definitely. You two must be hungry already, watching the matches and cheering like that. You get one too, kiddo.
Cain: Uncle… Thanks a lot. Let’s eat together!
We said thank you and opened our packages, then sat down side by side on the steps nearby to eat. I did as Cain told us and took a big bite of the generous sandwich.
Mitile – Akira: Whoa, yummy!
Cain: It’s great, isn’t it? The spices in the meat and the rich cheese balance each other out wonderfully.
Akira: That’s right! And the meat is thick but it’s so tender and juicy!
Mitile: There’s fried onion inside too. It’s crispy and goes really well with the meat and cheese. So delicious!
The uncle whom Cain knew: Ahaha, so well-mannered! Seeing you guys eat so heartily is worth the work of making these.
Cain: You’re a great chef, Uncle. Your shop’s menu has a good selection too. That’s why I often took my team there when I was with the Knights.
The uncle whom Cain knew: Yeah, whenever your unit had a mission in City of Glory, you lot would clear out my shop, saying ‘yummy, yummy’ while inhaling mountains of food. You always paid for all of them, right, kiddo?
Akira: What? You paid for everything?!
Mitile: Wow, that’s so dashing!
Cain: Ahaha, my hands moved on their own and opened the purse string. There’s nothing better than eating yummy food together with your team, you know.
Mitile: Mister Cain, you often treat me when we go shopping together too. You look very cool when you pay for me, but I want to treat you too!
Cain: Oh, that’s something to look forward to. Even so, let me pay until that day comes. I love seeing you eat your fill as your face goes ‘yummy’.
Mitile: Oh.. Ehehe.
I couldn’t help a smile as I watched Cain ruffled Mitile’s head.
The uncle whom Cain knew: …
As I instinctively looked at the uncle, he was looking at Cain and Mitile like me. His gaze was very gentle.
When it was time to join Lennox, Mitile left ahead, leaving Cain and me with the uncle.
The uncle whom Cain knew: Well then, I should go find the kids who were in the match to give them a reward. I’m really glad to meet you guys today.
Akira: I’m glad to meet you too. Thank you for the delicious sandwich!
Cain: I will give your shop a visit soon, and I’ll bring not just Mitile and Akira but the rest of our team.
The uncle whom Cain knew: Okay, we have a deal then! Now, may I have a minute with you, Master Sage?
Akira: Yes, what do you need me for?
The uncle suddenly grinned in reply. And then, still looking at me, he casually ruffled Cain’s head, who was standing in a slightly higher spot.
Cain: Uncle? What are you…
The uncle whom Cain knew: Master Sage, this brat always looks cheery like everything is fine with him, but he is prone to taking up more than he can handle ever since he was tiny. When he went to my shop alone, he would tell me that he wasn’t hungry at all, and ask me for the smallest, cheapest meal.
Cain: Oh, that. Honestly I was pretty surprised when you gave me a big portion without saying anything.
The uncle whom Cain knew: Of course. There was nothing you could hide from me, you know.
The uncle’s eyes when he jovially replied to Cain was gentle, just like how he looked at Cain and Mitile’s conversation with each other earlier.
The uncle whom Cain knew: And that’s why I’m worried about you. Master Sage, he hasn’t been pushing himself too much, has he?
Akira: That’s….
As I was thinking about what to reply, I remembered that day when he visited the graves of the deceased Sage’s Wizards.
Akira: (Cain is brave and dependable. I’ve been availing myself on his kindness a lot. But I can’t say there has been no toil on his mind and body)
Cain: Akira.
Cain spoke up as I fell silent. He nodded and smiled as if to reassure me, and placed his hand on the uncle’s hand that had been ruffling his hair.
Cain: Uncle, thanks for worry about me. But please let me look good in front of Master Sage, won’t you? Everything is well. I’m always full of energy because I have Master Sage and my comrades.
Cain: So next time when I come to your shop like back then, I would say it properly. “I’d like a big portion, but with a discount, please!”
The uncle whom Cain knew: Haha! Yeah, you really look like you’re okay.
The uncle whom Cain knew: Master Sage, sorry for bothering you! Please look after this kid for me.
Akira: Of course I will! I’m still very inexperienced, but Cain is important to me as my friend. I want to be a friend who notices when he takes all burden on himself like you, and whom he relies on.
Akira: No… I mean I’ll definitely become such a friend!
I clenched my fist tightly to give myself courage. Cain looked at me and smiled.
Cain: You’re already that friend though. Even so, you look so cool saying that just now, Akira. You’re really our dashing Master Sage!
Card episode: Please keep it a secret from the others
Cain: Master Sage, I’m going to the City of Glory for an errand. Would you like to join me? You remember the uncle whom we met at the swordplay exam? There’s something I’d like to deliver to him, so I’ll pass by his shop.
Akira: Oh, the cooking uncle! You’ve known him since you were a child, right? I’d love to go with you. I’m curious about what his shop is like, so thank you for inviting me!
Cain: Haha, I’m glad to hear that. In that case, I should invite Mitile too.
Akira: Let’s go find him. Oh, is there anyone else you’d like to invite?
Cain: Let me see. Riquet will likely ask to join us since Mitile is there. And with those two around then there’ll be Oz and Arthur. Rutile too…
Cain: Heath is pretty skinny so I’d like him to have Uncle’s meat dishes. In that case, Shino would probably want to go with him, so I’d invite them both at once.
Cain: And then maybe I should invite Owen too. I’ve no idea if he’d agree, but the shop has a good selection of desserts.
Akira: That’s a pretty big group! I think Uncle would be happy to meet everyone who has been living under the same roof as you though.
Cain: Yeah, I think so too. Oh, but there’s no guarantee that Uncle would keep my childhood stories to a reasonable amount, I’m afraid.
Akira: What’s the problem though? The last time I met Uncle, it was fun to hear stories about you.
Cain: Yeah, there’re many funny stories that I’d like to share with everyone. But what he told you that time was a bit embarrassing.
Cain: So, Master Sage, do me a favor and don’t tell anyone about what you heard, please?
Figaro and the Magic Manor
[In Figaro’s room]
Akira: Figaro, is this the first time you’ve been to the Magic Manor?
Figaro: No, I’ve been here before. I met the previous Sage too.
Akira: Oh I see. Did you come because Snow and White were Sage’s Wizards?
Figaro: No, no, not at all. I don’t show up in the places where those two are present on my own volition. In recent times, I came here mostly for Arthur’s sake, I suppose?
Akira: For Arthur?
Figaro: Yeah. He seemed to be lonely, being in the Capital of Central Country all on his own. I kept the previous Sage company too because Arthur was worried about him.
Akira: Oh, so that’s how it was. That reminds me. You’ve known Arthur since he was a child, right?
Figaro: I suppose you can say that.
Akira: (He took care of the previous Sage, huh. I wonder if he has been so kind to me for the same reason)
Figaro: Oh, from your expression, it seems that you’ve misunderstood something.
Akira: No, I-…
Figaro: I’ve some idea about what you were thinking already. So speak up, will you?
Akira: You already knew, yet you are making me say it aloud anyway?
Figaro: I do that because I’d like to make you understand. It’s like training animals, I guess?
Akira: Training animals?
Figaro: I’m interested in you, and I don’t hate you, so I have been taking care of you.
Figaro: Next time when I’m asked about the Magic Manor, allow me to answer that it’s a place full of memories with Master Sage.
Akira: Figaro…
Akira: Thank you. I’ll continue to avail myself on your good will from now on.
Figaro: Right, like that. Well done.
Akira: By the way, what did you mean with ‘training animals’?
Figaro: Ahaha, please forget that.
Rutile and the Magic Manor
[In Rutile’s room]
Akira: Rutile, this year is the first time you’ve been to the Magic Manor, right?
Rutile: Yes, but I have heard a little about the Magic Manor from the Sage’s Wizards of Southern Country already.
Akira: Oh, the Sage’s Wizards who passed away. What did they tell you?
Rutile: According to them, they met wizards from various countries when they went to the Magic Manor. The Central wizards were considerate. The Western wizards were eccentric and drank glowing wine. The Eastern wizards were taciturn. And it was nerve wrecking when the Northern wizards showed up, but there was a gourmand among the group, so they chatted with that wizard from time to time.
Akira: I wonder who they meant.
Rutile: Mister Bradley, I suppose? Mister Owen eats a lot if it’s sweet treats too! And Mister Mithra would put anything in his mouth, so I suppose you can call him a gourmand.
Akira: Ahaha, I guess so. And how do you find the building of the Magic Manor? Is it as you imagined?
Rutile: It’s even more magnificent than I expected! The building is bigger than the schools in Southern Country, and there are beautiful garden and courtyard on top of that.
Rutile: Master Sage, I love the Magic Manor. Many people from different countries, at different ages, are living together under the same roof. Like Mister Mithra, whom my mother knew, or Doctor Figaro’s acquaintances, or that gentleman whom Mister Leno has been looking for. And I met you too. It’s like I’ve entered the box of a puppet play.
Akira: The box of a puppet play?
Rutile: That’s right. I feel like, since many interesting people have gathered together, it’s time we start our story.
Akira: That’s an interesting way to put it! When you say that, I feel excited too. I can’t wait to see what kind of story will begin here at the Magic Manor.
Lennox and the Magic Manor
[In Lennox’s room]
Akira: Lennox, this is the first time you’ve been to the Magic Manor, right?
Lennox: No.
Akira: Oh, is that so?
Lennox: When I was looking for Lord Faust, I visited the Magic Manor many times, because I heard that occasionally some Sage’s Wizards would be replaced. If he got summoned, I would probably be able to find out something about him.
Akira: I see…
Lennox: …..
Akira: You’re making such a complicated expression as you calculate something on your fingers. What’s wrong?
Lennox: I’m thinking about when Lord Faust might have been summoned to be a Sage’s Wizard. Maybe he was here at the Magic Manor when I came by.
Akira: Huh. But if that’s the case, why couldn’t you meet him?
Lennox: Perhaps Lord Faust asked the Sage’s Wizards at the time to keep quiet about him and they were being accordingly discreet. After all, they might invite a troublesome grudge if they disturbed the hermit life of an Eastern wizard.
Akira: I suppose so…
Lennox: Or maybe I’m not very sociable so they didn’t feel like helping me.
Akira: I don’t think that’s the case though.
Akira: (But I wonder if they thought he was a landlord who came to collect rent or something like that.)
Akira: It’s certainly hard to look for a wizard. Like, the person you’re looking for may take up a different appearance and such.
Lennox: Indeed.
Akira: What did you say when you were looking for Faust?
Lennox: I described how he looked and gave his name, and told people that maybe everything about him had changed but he loved cats and galettes.
Akira: Looking for a missing person is certainly hard work.
Lennox: You don’t change your appearance so I think I’ll be able to find you right away.
Akira: Ahaha, that seems to be the case. Please look for me if I ever get lost.
Lennox: Yes, I will definitely find you.
Mitile and the Magic Manor
[In Mitile’s room]
Akira: Mitile, is this the first time you’ve been to the Magic Manor?
Mitile: Yes! I’ve only been to the Magic Manor as well as the Central Country after I became a Sage’s Wizard.
Akira: I see! Have you gotten used to life at the Magic Manor?
Mitile: I’m not used to living here to the extent that I feel this is my home yet, but I’m having fun. There are very few wizards at the Town of Clouds, but wizards are the norm here.
Mitile: It’s a bit confusing to feel that I’m being treated like I’m normal like everyone else though.
Akira: In what way? Can you give me an example?
Mitile: Like, people here don’t rely on me for anything. When I’m with my friends, they usually ask me for help with things like pulling down a tree branch, catching something that’s flying in the air, applying herbs when they get injured, and so on.
Akira: Ah, I get it now! You’re certainly very capable, Mitile. If I were the same age as you, I’d look to you for help too.
Mitile: Ehehe, thank you.
Mitile: However, when I’m at the Magic Manor, everyone often tells me ‘Shall I do it for you?’ instead. It’s nice to be pampered by people older than me, but I must work even harder!
Akira: That’s commendable, but please take it easy and have fun too.
Mitile: I will! Whether I’m the one being pampered or the one doing the pampering, I'm happy either way!
Akira: You doing the pampering?
Mitile: Oh, uhm. I suppose Riquet is the only one who is on the side of needing my care. He has strong magic, but there are many things he doesn’t know yet, so I feel it’s my duty to teach him as his friend!
Shylock and the Magic Manor
[In Shylock’s room]
Akira: Shylock, you’ve been to the Magic Manor many times before, right?
Shylock: Yes. I always paid a visit to the Manor before the battle with the Great Calamity.
Akira: Do you have any special memory about this place?
Shylock: Your question brings the faces of people whom I will never meet again to my mind. Some Sage’s Wizards have always been around, but the group has changed a lot with the times.
Shylock: Once there was a wizard who looked at the carvings on the gate of a newly renovated Magic Manor and was delighted by the elegant and innovative design. Then a few decades later, another wizard arrived, looked at the same carvings, and found them hackneyed and boorish. And yet some more decades passed, when someone young came by and commented that those same carvings were cool in a retro way.
Shylock: Though the object is the same, fashion changes with the time, so the value ascribed to certain values also changes. I never intend to change, however, there have been people who call me youthful.
Akira: Have you been called an elderly?
Shylock: …….
Akira: Ah, please don’t misunderstand me! That isn’t what I mean! I just wonder if there's anyone who would make such a comment to you!
Shylock: *chuckles* I’ve also been said to be calm and mature.
Akira: I see!
Akira: On the other hand, you certainly seem calm and mature at first glance, but you’re really…
Shylock: I’m really what?
Akira: There’re times you’re playful like a mischievous child too.
Shylock: Oh my, that’s lovely to hear.
Akira: Is that the influence from the cat-like Murr? Or is that an aspect of your personality all this time?
Shylock: Well, who knows. My teenaged self was probably on the straight-laced, overly serious side. On the other hand, like with the gate we talked about earlier, the value attached to me changes with the times. Perhaps the me who exists in this ever breaking world is always the same, but in the past, people viewed me as a naïve and earnest youth.
Akira: (It’d be fun to experience the era when Shylock is considered naïve).
Murr and the Magic Manor
[In Murr’s room]
Akira: You’ve been to the Magic Manor many times before, right?
Murr: Yeah~!
Akira: Do you remember anything about this place?
Murr: U-hm…. I forgot everything!
Akira: I- I see. Don’t you have any clear flash of recollection either?
Murr: U-hm, I was happy!
Akira: You were happy?
Murr: I was summoned to be a Sage’s Wizard! My beloved moon! The Great Calamity! I was sad that I of all people wasn’t chosen to be in the company of wizards to whom the special crest granted by the Great Calamity appeared, so I was overjoyed when I was chosen!
Akira: I- I see. I’m glad for you. In that case, you first came to the Magic Manor after you became a Sage’s Wizard?
Murr: Nope! I had been here before that! Why those people were chosen but not me? Were there some kind of conditions for the selection? With those questions in mind, I came here to collect biological materials for research from the Sage’s Wizards. The ones present were all wizards, so they were absurdly averse to that idea, making it impossible to carry out.
Akira: Oh, so they refused to hand over their blood or hair. In any case, did you find out what the conditions for being summoned were?
Murr: N-o id-ea! I forgot about that already!
Chloe and the Magic Manor
[In Chloe’s room]
Akira: Chloe, have you been to the Magic Manor before?
Chloe: No, this is the first time I’ve been here! Also the first time I learnt that there’s such a place like the Magic Manor or that a crest appears too. From now on, there’ll be lots of training here for the battle against the Great Calamity, right?! I’ll try my best! Let’s work hard together, Master Sage!
Akira: Sure!
Chloe: It’s certainly exciting that there are many wizards at the Magic Manor! Perhaps I’ll simply die when I least expect it. Earlier I met Mithra…..
Akira: You nearly died together with Mithra?! Are you okay?!
Chloe: I’m fine, I’m fine. Mithra is so tall and dashing, isn’t he? But I found it scary to strike a conversation with a Northern wizard like him, so I just discreetly watched him from a distance. When I was lost in thought about the kind of outfit that would suit him, he suddenly appeared in front of me and asked what I was staring at as he placed a leg on the table.
Akira: (It’s like he got on the wrong side of a delinquent. If it were me I would simply cry)
Chloe: But when I talked directly with him, we had a fun chat about outfits.
Akira: Heh, that’s unexpected!
Chloe: Mithra said he had a spare outfit lying around that I could try and brought it out.
Akira: What kind of outfit is that?
Chloe: An enchanted outfit that absorbs the magical power of your opponent and increases your defense.
Akira: Oh. Did you try it on?
Chloe: No, I didn’t manage to. Rustica, Shylock, and Faust all came barging in. They said that outfit may be fine for Mithra, but I’d die if I put it on.
Akira: I’m so glad you’re okay!
Chloe: So there’re all kinds of outfits in the world! I’d like to see more of them!
Rustica and the Magic Manor
[In Rustica’s room]
Akira: Rustica, have you been to the Magic Manor before?
Rustica: Hmm, I wonder. I don’t remember. I have travelled for a long time, so maybe I’ve had the occasion to stop by this place.
Akira: Oh. You wizards live for a long time, right?
Rustica: That’s right. What about you, Master Sage? Have you gotten used to life in the Magic Manor yet?
Akira: I have, thanks to everyone. You are all so kind and the life here is lively, so it’s fun for me.
Rustica: I’m glad to hear that. There’s nothing I wish for more than you feeling at ease in your everyday life here. Even so, from time to time, there must be nights when loneliness comes to you, just like there are sunny days and rainy days. In times like that, please feel free to call on me.
Akira: Rustica…
Rustica: I am a decent musician and an even better conversationalist. If the friends I met here at the Magic Manor or you wish for a recital, I’ll be happy to make use of my skills. Allow me the honor of being by your side, Master Sage.
Akira: Thank you. Your words made me feel lighter. I do have anxiety occasionally. In such moments, please let me talk to you and listen to your music.
Rustica: I’ll be delighted to.
Rustica: It’s decided then. Let’s come up what to do for a party right now, for the occasions when we get lonely.
Akira: A party?
Rustica: Yes. That way, we will be able to welcome even the darkest of nights, don’t you think?
Akira: Ahaha! That’s interesting! In that case, let’s make a spread of cakes and eat a lot of sweets.
Rustica: Delightful. We’ll need Nero’s help in that case. Any other idea?
Akira: I’d like to fall asleep while spreading out on the bed and being surrounded by cats!
Rustica: That will require the cooperation of the cats and Owen. Anything else?
Akira: Uhm, let me think….
Faust and the Magic Manor
[In Faust’s room]
Akira: Faust, you’ve been to the Magic Manor many times before in the past, right?
Faust: Well, I’m a Sage’s Wizard. It isn’t like I have a choice.
Akira: Is there anything related to the Magic Manor that’s memorable to you?
Faust: Yes. They’re all bad memories though.
Akira: So you’ve a pretty negative view of this place.
Faust: Sorry. Even if I tell you about those, bygones are bygones.
Faust: Do you want to hear about the history of the Magic Manor?
Akira: Yes, if you don’t mind. I’m not really a scholar of history though. More like a casual hobbyist.
Faust: When I was young, about 400 years ago, this place wasn’t a magnificent building like this.
Akira: Oh I see.
Faust: I only saw it from afar though. Back then, the Magic Manor looked like a simple fort or tower built from stone. Someone I knew wanted to have a look at the Sage from another world, so he planned to break into the Manor in secret.
Akira: He broke into the Manor?! Wow, he must have been very, very curious.
Faust: He didn’t do that in the end. He thought a person who came from a faraway world and returned to an unknown place must have been lonely, and wanted to be friends with the Sage. However, he was aware it was difficult to do that.
Akira: Is it difficult to be friends with the Sage?
Faust: What do you think? A person, whom you will part with at an indeterminate time and who will remember neither your name nor your face. Would you call someone like that your friend?
Shino and the Magic Manor
[In Shino’s room]
Akira: Shino, this year is the first time you’ve been to the Magic Manor, right?
Shino: That’s right. The previous round when Heath was summoned to be Sage’s Wizard, I wanted to accompany him but our magic teacher Jack stopped me. According to him, I would act like a braggart in the presence of the wizards from other countries if I was around.
Akira: Now that you’re here, what do you think about the Magic Manor?
Shino: Not bad. I myself got a pretty nice room. Heath’s room is totally inadequate though. There’s not nearly enough space. He’s the heir of the Blanchetts, you know. But Heath says he’ll put up with it because the Prince of Central Country Arthur doesn’t complain about his room.
Shino: Arthur has a big castle just a stone's throw away though, while Heath doesn’t. We should pick a floor and convert all of it into a room for Heath.
Akira: B- but I think Heath may decline something like that?
Shino: I’m aware of that. He’s always reserved and modest. I have to champion what he deserves for him. At the very least, it’s inappropriate that his room is of the same size as mine. I was happy for a moment at first, but our stations are different. We aren’t fellow disciples of the same master. We aren’t friends either.
Akira: Can’t you put aside your positions of master and retainer when you are at the Magic Manor and be his friend? I think it’d be lovely if you and he can make a lot of memories as friends during the time you live here.
Shino: I don’t think so. If the Magic Manor doesn’t treat Heath as appropriate for his station, then I have to do that. I want to bring Heath even more radiant, wonderful things.
Shino: Don’t you have the same feeling when you look at Heath? That’s normal, right?
Akira: Uhm, I guess I understand what you mean. The urge to bring him beautiful gifts.
Shino: You get it. I want to make him shine even brighter with items that are worthy of him.
Shino: ……..
Shino: Do you mind if I build a special villa for Heath on the roof of the Magic Manor?
Akira: Uhm, I’d rather you not.
Shino: How about the courtyard?
Akira: No, please.
Shino: Damn. This is an issue that concerns the honor of Heath’s family, you know.
Heathcliff and the Magic Manor
[In Heathcliff’s room]
Akira: Heathcliff, this isn’t the first time you live at the Magic Manor, right?
Heathcliff: That’s right. I stayed here for an extended time before the battle with the Great Calamity. During that time, I became friends with Cain and learnt magic from Master Faust. My deceased magic teacher Jack lived with me in the Manor too.
Akira: So this is a place with lots of memories for you.
Heathcliff: It really is. Perhaps because of that, I was incredibly happy when Shino was summoned. Like, Shino is here too, in the Magic Manor that holds a lot of memories for me.
Heathcliff: Perhaps it’s a burden for Shino that we have such a fate with each other though.
Akira: That’s not the case at all. I think he would be angry instead if his fate wasn’t linked with yours. Since your fates are linked together, he must be happy.
Heathcliff: I’d be glad if that’s the case. It feels so strange to me though. When I first met Master Faust and Nero, Rutile and Chloe for the first time, I couldn’t imagine that we would get along with each other. And yet, we talk with each other so comfortably about many topic everyday now.
Heathcliff: To me, the Magic Manor is certainly a place where I meet people.
Akira: It’s lovely you have had many wonderful encounters.
Heathcliff: Thank you very much. Master Sage, from the bottom of my heart, I’m thankful that I met you too.
Nero and the Magic Manor
[In Nero’s room]
Akira: Nero, this is the first time you’ve been to the Magic Manor, right? Or have you been here before?
Nero: No. This is indeed the first time I come here. In the past, I tried to stay away from this place even if I had errands in Central.
Akira: You did? Why…
Nero: Certain geezers often mingle among the Sage’s Wizards. I wanted to give them a wide berth because no way to know what kind of trouble I’d get dragged into. I was doing what normal people did and had a pretty comfortable life. It’d be a pain if that got messed up.
Akira: I see. In that case, what kind of impression did you have when you first arrived at the Magic Manor?
Nero: Scared out of my wits. There were one too many Northern wizards in a small place. It was like keeping dragons and wyverns in a rows of cells on the same floor. Things have been working out far better than I dared to imagine though. It’s all thanks to you, Mx. Sage.
Akira: Me?
Nero: Yeah. No one wants to see you sad, you know. Anyway, you've been working hard.
Snow and the Magic Manor
[In Akira’s room]
Snow: Dearest Sage, have you gotten used to life at the Magic Manor yet?
Akira: I have, thanks to everyone. Did all of the Sages before me live here too?
Snow: That’s indeed the arrangement, ever since the Central Country furnished this place for us.
Akira: I see. What kind of life did the Sages before me have?
Snow: How did they live, you ask. That’s difficult to say. The custom was such that Sage’s Wizards only gathered once a year. It’s only after you became the Sage that we began living together in one place like this.
Akira: Oh, you’ve told me about that.
Snow: We twins love our unusual guests, so we have always taken the initiative to look after the Sages. Not many people care about the Sages, so they seem lonely. I have the impression that they wrote about that in details in the Sages’ Guides.
Akira: I see. Perhaps writing diary was a way to take their minds off the loneliness of their daily lives. I’m glad that I get to be the Sage in a Magic Manor where everyone lives together. Thank you.
Snow: Took the word right out of my mouth! It’s unprecedented that Northern wizards live under the same roof like this. I have the feeling that with you, we’ll overcome all obstacles. We’ll continue to rely on you in the future.
Akira: Sure! I’ll do…
[Shaking effect]
Akira: ….?! What was that just now? The Manor was shaking?!
Snow: Yeah, a bit. It looks like a corner of the Manor was blown off.
Akira: Eh?!
Snow: No need to worry! That happens all the time!
Akira: B.. But…
Snow: We’ll overcome our obstacles!
White and the Magic Manor
[In White’s room]
White: Hohoho, have you gotten used to life at the Magic Manor yet, my dear Sage?
Akira: I have, thanks to everyone. You’ve been a Sage’s Wizard since a long time ago, right?
White: Indeed.
Akira: Do you have any memory related to the Magic Manor?
White: Good question. To us, the Manor is the place where we gather once a year to battle the Great Calamity. At the same time, it’s also the annual occasion to meet with fellow Sage’s Wizards. Because of that, the previous Sage commented that the event felt a bit like a gathering of relatives for the New Year.
Akira: A New Year’s gathering?
White: ‘Oh hello, Mithra my dear~! It’s been forever since I last saw you. How are you doing? My lovely Bradley, come here~! Dearest Owen, how many times did you die this year already? Oh my, that sounds rough!’
White: “Fair Shylock, is your business doing well? Are you still dating that man? Oh dear~”
White: Something like that, I think.
Akira: Oh you’re right. It really feels like a family gathering.
White: ‘Oh, so you’re Cain. This is your first time here, right? Take this, it’s not much but it can be useful for you.’
Akira: So you guys even hand out New Year’s lucky money.
White: Hohoho, I’ll prepare something for you before this year’s battle with the Great Calamity too.
White: It’d be nice to meet with the current Sage’s Wizards like that year after year, but that’s not something I can say anymore with how strong the Great Calamity is this year.
Akira: You have a point…
White: My dear Sage, no need to worry. I’ll work even harder than usual to return you to your home world.
Akira: Thank you so much. I myself will do everything I can to be of help for everyone.
White: Hohoho, that’s reassuring to hear! It’s enough for now that you learn about this world at the Magic Manor. But don’t overdo it.
Mithra and the Magic Manor
[In Mithra’s room]
Akira: Mithra, you’ve been to the Magic Manor many times before, right?
Mithra: Yes. I came here whenever there was a battle with the Great Calamity.
Akira: Do you have any special memory related to the Magic Manor?
Mithra: Special memory? I’m not sure if I have any. I only came here once a year, you know. Ah, that’s right. I once turned a Sage’s Wizard to stone here.
Akira: Eh?!
Mithra: Huh? Maybe that didn’t happen here, I guess? In any case, I turned a Sage’s Wizard whom I met at the Magic Manor to stone somewhere in this area.
Akira: W- Why did you do something like that?
Mithra: They attacked me. Maybe they lost control out of fear when they learnt about my identity. It’s nothing strange that we Northern wizards start killing each other when we gather in close quarter like this.
Akira: Even so, I’d like you to refrain from doing so as much as possible in the present. Could you please talk to each other or something like that?
Mithra: What?
Akira: I- I mean, please give it a try…
Akira: Uhm, as much as possible… Please…
Mithra: What are you mumbling about?
Akira: I’d like to find a way to convince you about the importance of love, peace and life.
Mithra: Whaat?
Mithra: Well, I don’t mind giving it a thought.
Akira: You will?!
Mithra: There’s a condition though.
Akira: W- what is that?
Mithra: You must take my side when I have a quarrel with anyone. You must be my cheerleader. As long as you do that, I’m fine with not fighting.
Akira: Uhm, what about when you’re in the wrong?
Mithra: Even when I’m in the wrong too.
Akira: ……..
Akira: Understood.
Mithra: Great.
Akira: So, love and peace and life are very important. Please remember that.
Mithra: Yes. I’ll keep that in mind.
Owen and the Magic Manor
[In Owen’s room]
Akira: Owen, you’ve been to this Magic Manor many times before, right?
Owen: Isn’t that obvious? I’ve been Sage’s Wizard from way back, you know. Once summoned, I have to do this duty until I lose my magic. It’s insufferable.
Akira: I get that, I think… Even so, since you’ve been here many times already, is there anything memorable to you?
Owen: Something memorable?
Akira: Yes. Don’t you have anything to remember when it comes to the Magic Manor?
Owen: …Oh. Hehehe, I suppose I do.
Akira: You’re in a good mood all of a sudden.
Owen: I am not. Anyway, it was here that I encountered someone I once thoroughly trounced again. His surprised face was a sight to see. On my part, I laughed. Like, in a ‘So something like this happens to even me’ way.
Akira: What is ‘something like this’?
Owen: How would you call it? That’s something Mithra and Bradley have too. Like, to meet again someone you’ve met. Or to see a place you’ve been looking for because you’ve been there before. For Mithra, it’d be that witch. For Bradley, it’d be that cave in the North. Something like that.
Owen: I have no such thing, but for some reason, that’s what it felt like.
Akira: What can it be? Coincidence? Getting involved with someone? A predestined connection? Or Fate?
Owen: Hrmph, all those words sound insufferably tedious. That’s why I laughed at ‘that thing’ in mockery, because it was totally ridiculous. I didn’t want it. I didn’t like it. It felt nasty.
Owen: But it was in this place that I once again encountered something like that.
Bradley and the Magic Manor
[In Bradley’s room]
Akira: Bradley, you’ve been to the Magic Manor many times before, right?
Bradley: Yep, whenever the Great Calamity came around, I would be taken from the prison to here. So I, the Great Bradley, think of this place as a proxy to freedom.
Akira: A proxy to freedom?
Bradley: I’m aware that this isn’t true freedom. But once a year, I got to eat good food when I came here. There was booze too!
Akira: Oh, I see….
Bradley: Even with the twins watching me day and night, I could enjoy this sham freedom.
Akira: In that case, what stands out in your memory about the Magic Manor to you must be the good food and drinks.
Bradley: Whether the food is good or not depends on the year. The quality varied by the chefs sent over by the Central Country or the wizards who did the cooking.
Akira: Is there a dish that is memorable to you?
Bradley. Good question. Some decades ago… Or maybe it was a century ago. The meal made by the Sage who arrived in this world was great. That was chicken in soup.
Akira: Eeh…
Bradley: The flavor is unforgettable. It’d be nice to taste that once again before I die.
Bradley: Hey, can you make that? Chicken soup with sour cream.
Akira: M- maybe. That sounds complicated.
Bradley: Heh, I was thinking maybe you knew how since you’re from the same place. Ah well, don’t worry about it.
Bradley: This year I have no reason to complain about dinner. Everything on the table looks good, you know.
Oz and the Magic Manor
[In Oz's room]
Akira: Oz, have you been to the Magic Manor before?
Oz: I have, since I became a Sage’s Wizard.
Akira: Do you have any memory related to the Manor?
Oz: …….
Oz: For several centuries, I didn’t have the occasion to meet anyone besides certain wizards.
Akira: That’s right. You used to stay in your castle in Northern Country.
Oz: Even if I met someone, I’d turn them into stone right away.
Akira: Oh. Because they came to attack you.
Oz: That’s the case. I encountered those who managed to escape countless times later though.
Akira: (That’s a terrible social life)
Oz: It’s in this Manor that I met a large number of wizards again after a long while.
Akira: I see. How did you feel about being in contact with many wizards?
Oz: They were noisy.
Akira: (That’s a terrible impression)
Akira: Do you remember anything else?
Oz: …….. The wizard of Eastern Country Heathcliff, he….
Akira: What about Heathcliff?
Oz: He was the youngest of the Sage’s Wizards, and he went pale with fear of the moon.
Oz: He is quite close in age to Arthur too.
Oz: There was no need for him to be so afraid because I was there. However, in the recent battle with the Great Calamity, had Faust not protected him, he would have turned into stone.
Akira: That’s what you remember?
Oz: Am I wrong? Every time I recall that incident, I’m filled with a bitter feeling.
Arthur and the Magic Manor
[In Arthur's room]
Akira: You’ve been to the Magic Manor many times before, haven’t you Arthur?
Arthur: Yeah. Since I returned to Central Country, I tried to make the time to visit here. I first met the previous Sage here too and became friends with him.
Akira: The previous Sage wrote a lot about you in his Sage’s Guide.
Arthur: Haha, I’m happy to hear that. Back then I had just returned to the Capital, so I was completely at a loss from being unfamiliar with the culture around me. I didn’t know anyone, and there were certain things I wasn’t aware of. Then there was the matter of starting a new life among strangers who didn’t know me.
Arthur: I was anxious about whether I would find a place for me, and I wanted to return to where I used to be. Perhaps because of that, I felt the Noble Sage from a different world was in the same situation as me.
Akira: That makes sense. After all, you’re the Prince of this country but you grew up in Oz’s Castle.
Arthur: Indeed.
Akira: (That’s probably why he did so many things so that I wouldn’t feel lonely. It must have been hard for Arthur when he newly returned from Oz’s Castle.)
Arthur: Even so, I could return to Master Oz’s Castle any time I wished. It’s perhaps presumptuous of me to compare myself to the Noble Sages like you, who don’t know how to return home.
Akira: Not at all, Arthur. I felt happy when you said our circumstances are similar. Thank you for being so kind to me.
Arthur: Master Sage, it’s me who should show my gratitude to you. Even though you’ve been facing many troubles in a place you don’t understand, you still love us and this world. Thank you. I will do my best so that you can find some moments of joy, no matter how brief.
Arthur: Well then, what would you like to do here at the Magic Manor?
Akira: Eh? Uhm, give me a moment. This feels like a party to welcome people who have just moved in, so… How about a karaoke party?
Arthur: Karaoke? That’s the first time I hear of such a festivity. Let’s do it!
Cain and the Magic Manor
[In Cain's room]
Akira: Cain, you have been to the Magic Manor many times before, right?
Cain: Yeah. I went here a lot after I was summoned to be Sage’s Wizard. There were times I lived here for an extended period too. Apparently the usual custom is the Sage’s Wizards only gather there before the battle with the Calamity. But at the time I was newly dismissed from my position. Also I wanted to be around Arthur and I liked the previous Sage.
Akira: So you went to meet Arthur as a Sage’s Wizard?
Cain: No, that wasn’t possible from my side. Rather, Arthur regularly went to the Magic Manor instead. Neither Arthur nor I could leave the previous Sage by himself. When I visited the previous Sage, we would have a chat or go shopping together.
Akira: Oh I see.
Cain: The previous Sage rarely left the Magic Manor, but he had fun every time we were in town. Whenever we found food that was similar to what he had in his home world, he would be very happy. He and I once experimented with making the dish called curry too.
Akira: Curry! I want to eat that! Did the previous Sage say ‘Yummy’ about the curry you guys made?
Cain: He kept making this complicated face as he said ‘It’s certainly fiery, but I feel that something is lacking?’
Akira: That’s likely the case. From what I heard, making curry is pretty difficult because you need a lot of spices for it.
Cain: Even so, he also said ‘love is the best spice of them all’. So I’ll put a lot of love in my curry. I think you’ll find it to your liking!
Riquet and the Magic Manor
[In Riquet's room]
Akira: This is the first time you live at the Magic Manor too, right Riquet? Have you gotten used to everything here?
Riquet: Yes, I have. Many things were confusing to me at first, but now I often find that I enjoy myself living here.
Akira: I’m glad to hear that!
Riquet: I was peeling legumes with Nero today. We’re going to have soup for dinner. Rutile has been teaching me and Mitile to read and write. It still takes me a lot of time, but Rutile said he loves my writing.
Akira: That’s great! What are about your magic training?
Riquet: I am taking magic training with other Central wizards. Oz’s way of talking can be difficult to understand sometimes, but I find what he says interesting. His Reverend from my Church is a better orator than Oz, and many things he taught me were different. However, the mysterious, wonderful world that Oz has been teaching me is fascinating!
Akira: In what way is what Oz taught interesting?
Riquet: Uhm, like when there is something we cannot put into words, I think.
Akira: When we can’t find the words for something?
Riquet: His Reverend explained everything to me with his words, but Oz said there are things that we feel in our hearts but can’t explain with words. It's not that he talked clearly and in details though. Rather, he mumbled and grumbled a lot.
Akira: Haha, I think I know what you mean. Can you give me a bit more details?
Riquet: It is like, the things that we consider a matter of course are actually what we find hard to put into words, and that’s different from person to person. Yet when we say them out loud, we end up talking the same way as other people. The special sensations that only we would feel are something that is in our hearts before we express it in words, so we connect with the world as we immerse in that particular scent or shade of color.
Akira: Wow… that’s fascinating.
Riquet: I would like to try and express myself with words. On the other hand, there is meaning in the me that there is no word for too. Because of that, I love conversations that are worth our careful consideration. And I feel that it is fine if certain things are left unsettled.
Akira: I understand what you mean, somehow. You’ve just gotten to know a whole new world, so I’d like it if you can take things in stride and live freely.
Riquet: I will! Thank you very much, Master Sage!
Part 13: The House of Wizards and the Unsettling Visitor
Part 13.1 Figaro’s Guide
Figaro: So, a Sage’s Guide, huh.
Figaro: …..
I caress the cover of the Sage’s Guide that Akira gave me. Some time ago, I opened a clinic in the Southern Country and so kept a simple record of my work as a doctor. However, it’s been a while since I last wrote something like a personal diary or a log.
*Flashback*
When we started the development of Southern Country, I kept a record to keep track of how far the people had moved. That was an important task. Even if it looked like a list of simple incidents, you might notice something when you looked at what was written with an objective view. The next settlement was three days of travel away. It would take a week to travel to the town by the lake. If you had a horse, you could go twice as fast. Or something like, the stomachache of that patient only happened when they ate certain things.
*End flashback*
What Akira requested is vague. What do they want to know? What do they want to find out? How much details do they want? And even so, perhaps they may be seized by anxiety and will delete it all.
*Flashback*
Akira: I would like you to report to me about what happens and how you wield your leadership, so that I can fulfil my duty without error when the day I have to be in such a position comes.
*End flashback*
I recall the face of the gentle-hearted Akira and smile ruefully.
Figaro: (They want me to tell them things that I witness from my point of view, huh. What would you do if you see the world as I do, Master Sage?)
I leave the room without taking the Sage’s Guide with me. It will be enough if I provide a simple version of events, enough so that Akira won’t be disappointed. Or perhaps it won’t be a problem if I really write down what I have.
I like Akira. They give a good impression. They’re hardworking. And they try their best to be our ally. I want to protect them and make them happy to the best of my ability.
However, I won’t be with Akira for long. Even if I pour out everything I have like wine that freely flows from its bottle and really talk, so much that it terrifies and disappoints Akira…
The glass will tip over. The Sage will disappear to somewhere and never to be seen again.
I should just be completely casual about this. I like this kind of relationship when two people talk to each other as much as they like when the mood is good then part ways without entanglement.
Figaro: (On the other hand, I played around casually too much, so now not much is left for me. Something irreplaceable that belongs to only me).
It’s important to keep records. I stopped keeping a diary because I was fed up with details that came up again and again. Meeting people, getting hurt by them, getting tired of them, getting disappointed, hiding my disappointment and smiling. And softly like brushing dirt aside, separation. The same things happened time and time again, so I’m fed up with this world. However, I’m even more fed up with myself when I’m like that.
Lennox: Good morning, Doctor Figaro.
When I walk by the tower of the Magic Manor on my way to the rendezvous point, I meet Lennox. He is a former Central wizard who prefers to do everything manually instead of using magic. In the present, he keeps sheep. This man once spent 400 years to find his lord, who had disappeared without a trace, having not a clue and relying purely on his faith and dedication.
Figaro: (Is that something a normal person can do?)
What he did can only be carried out by a sick person who has stopped all thinking in their head. No way I can imitate that. On the other hand, perhaps instead of calling Leno a fool, one should say that this world is valuable because of someone like him is in it.
What a strange man.
Figaro: Good morning. You’re early.
Lennox: You don’t look good. What’s the problem?
Figaro: It’s impolite to tell someone they look bad, you know.
Lennox: Not that I like it but shall I praise you?
Figaro: Oh please. You misunderstood me. Please stop your masochist act.
Lennox: Hah. Huh? Masochist act?
Figaro: What did you do just now?
Lennox: I went to see Lord Faust off.
Figaro: Ah.
Following Lennox’ gaze, I look at the tower of the Magic Manor. Through a window pane, I can see him. Faust, my former disciple. My heart hurts whenever I think about him, the same way as I feel when I think about the homeland that I’ve lost or when I recall the species that was exterminated.
Part 13.2 The past that I let go of and the sweet lingering attachment
Figaro: (I’m fed up with a lot of my companions, but I’ve never been disappointed about Faust. He was everything I could hope for. He was too perfect, such that my Masters the twins used to tease me by asking if he was a magical construction tailor made for me. He had a noble ideal, selfless integrity, compassion for the weak, as well as respect and affection for me who was his teacher.
*Flashback*
For example, from ancient times, a great river has been flowing across the continent. No one would question the fact that people drink from the river, wash their dirty clothes in it, use it to drive their boats and travel to places. Even so, the people who feel grateful for the benefits the river brings them will be hateful toward it and call it an evil god when flood happens once in a while.
Faust was different. He served me with complete sincerely and was grateful to me even if he knew he might be killed. In a turbulent time, he devoted himself to both me and his army, probably to protect his grandmother, mother, and younger sister. He was the child who would humbly thank the river for a drop of water and remember the grace he received for the rest of his life.
Faust: Lord Figaro.
Faust: O Great Teacher, please impart your wisdom on this ignorant one. Forgive me the impertinence of asking for the lessons you have acquired through the many years of living in this world without knowing the pains and sorrows that come with time.
Figaro: I don’t mind, Faust. Alas, if there were more people who are so considerate to us like you…
Faust: Lord Figaro…
Figaro: Everyone thinks we’ll answer them when they ask us like an echo. And if we don’t answer them, it’s because we’re malicious or misanthropic. They all forget that there’s our sweats and blood, our history in our teachings. Thus they pick at me again and again like a flock of crows.
Figaro: “Hey, if you happen to know about it then tell me. If you don’t want me to make a mistake then tell me, right now. If you don’t, then it’ll be your fault when we die from our foolish actions.”
Faust: Has there been someone who was so insolent toward you, even as they begged you to give them guidance?
Figaro: That’s right. As a result, before I knew it, I’ve grown to resent the people whom I wanted to protect. Even so, the truth is I myself want to give a helping hand for a long time. Perhaps you’ll be able to do for them what I couldn’t. I’ll teach you everything I know, Faust.
*End flashback*
Figaro: ………
I recall the scenery of that day as I squint my eyes under the bright sunlight that shines through the trees. Even as I was most careful and meticulous in my cultivation of him, so that he would become a wizard who left his name in history, in the end, it was I who let go first. Nevertheless, a sweet attachment lingers on.
Lennox moves his gaze from the tower of the Magic Manor to me and asks.
Lennox: You have the face of someone who still has regrets.
Figaro: …..
I sullenly keep my silence. He is really insufferable when he’s like this.
However, showing one’s attitude is also an aspect of a casual friendship. He apologizes when I look angry.
Lennox: My apologies.
Figaro: It’s no big deal.
Lennox is unperturbed, in a ‘Ah well, that’s how it is I suppose’ way. He is really insufferable when he’s like this.
Lennox: If only you would have a proper talk with Lord Faust though.
Figaro: How should I do that, pray tell? He has been avoiding me.
Lennox: Even if Lord Faust does curses for hire now, he is still serious and sincere at his core. If you tell him you want to talk to him about something important, if you talk to him seriously, I think you and him will be able to meet each other halfway.
Figaro: Maybe. Thank you. I appreciate your advice.
Lennox shrugs at my empty show of gratitude and continues walking.
Lennox: You’re complicated, Doctor Figaro.
Figaro: And you’re simple. I suppose you were in the same position of being avoided by him. And yet it looks like Faust is losing and crumbling in the face of your persistence.
Lennox: If he’s indeed crumbling, then my way is the correct way, isn’t it?
Figaro: You… Then am I a fool to do what I’m told and stay out of his way as he wishes? Would it really be easier to do it like you and imposing myself on him despite his wish? Ah well, I guess things like that happen.
Lennox: It isn’t easy at all. I still have to hold myself back a bit longer, or I may end up pressing him into a corner like that time.
Lennox whispers as if talking to himself.
Part 13.3 That time when I found the purpose of my life
400 years ago, a gravely injured Faust due to a certain incident ran away from Lennox who was taking care of him. Lennox thinks it was his fault. I too think that was probably the case. There are times the way Lennox is so straightforward makes you feel good, but there’re also times his innocence can be grating, especially when you’re in so much despair that you’re falling apart. His frankness to the point of foolishness can save you but can also be a great burden.
Ah well, maybe this is just my prejudice speaking. There’re things only Lennox can do but I can’t. Perhaps sometimes it’s the forcefulness of someone clinging to you that will save you instead of the kindness of someone stepping aside.
To tell the truth, I was in a foul mood when Oz, who was in the middle of controlling the world with me, cut me off without a care. I was saved when Faust came asking for me. I too am attached to Lennox and Faust. It was him who granted us an era when we kept on running like in a dream.
Figaro: (It was ‘them’ to be precise, I suppose.)
The hero who established a country, Alec Granvelle. That golden child who changed history was a friend of Faust’s. Faust and Alec, who moved people’s hearts and beckoned them to an era of a new hope. Without a strong will, nothing would happen even if one had the vision of everything in the world and the miraculous power to build a high tower.
I once changed the person who sat on the throne. I once burnt half of the world to ash. I was once loved by a mass of knowing faces. However, little by little, all I could do was to be someone who whiled away his life in complete idleness.
Figaro: (That’s why I was so happy back then, when I could believe that cultivating that boy was my mission in life. I was filled with joy thinking that there was meaning to my life.)
Lennox definitely felt the same. That’s why we both have regrets and lingering attachment.
Figaro: Where are Rutile and Mitile? We agreed that the plan for today is to go to the market of Central Country.
Lennox: They said when we talked yesterday that they would go with us. We’re going to the empty house that they gifted to us for use as we like, right?
Figaro: That’s right. Today we’re going to have a chat with not only the owner of the house but also those who lent us a hand. People will feel at ease with a gentle youth like Rutile and a smart student like Mitile around.
Lennox: I suppose so.
Figaro: Shall we go fetch them from their rooms? It’s fine if we go in the afternoon instead too though.
As we are talking, I sense Rutile and Mitile’s presences. I turn my back and see Rutile pulling Mitile along as he runs towards us. As usual, I expect that Rutile would apologize for being late while gasping then smile at us. However, he is crying as he looks at us. His soft cheeks are all red, while his indomitable will seems to shine brighter than ever.
Rutile: ……
I see Tiletta’s face.
Figaro: Rutile? What’s wrong?
He opens his mouth then resolutely presses his lips together. Then he closes his eyes and shakes his head.
Rutile: I’m fine. Please don’t mind me.
Rutile holds tightly onto Mitile’s shoulders as if to protect him.
Mitile: …..
Mitile vaguely looks at Rutile as if wanting to say something.
I realize that something is wrong. When Rutile is crying, such an attitude from Mitile, who adores his older brother, is unusual. Usually he’d say, ‘Doctor Figaro, please listen to me! Something terrible happened to my brother!’. Or ‘What’s wrong, Brother?! Why are you crying?!’. The current Mitile isn’t surprised that Rutile is crying, but he doesn’t seem to be in sympathy with his brother either.
I look at Mitile in the eyes and ask.
Figaro: Mitile, what’s the matter? Do you know what happened to Rutile?
Mitile: Uhm, Mister Mithra…
Figaro: Mithra?
I look at Rutile in surprise. Lennox too becomes wary.
Rutile’s face crumbles, as if he wants to say something but is unable to find the words. He presses his lips as his shoulders shake. Mitile stares dumbfoundedly at his brother, who is in such a state.
Rutile: I’m sorry, Doctor Figaro. Nothing happened, really. Please forget about this.
Figaro: Understood. I won’t ask any more if talking about it is painful for you. Are you or Mitile injured? Did you eat something strange that you found on the way?
Part 13.4 The night that was all at once sad, surreal, and absurd
Mitile: ……
Mitile looks tense. Rutile hugs him even more tightly.
Rutile: No. We’re all fine.
The way they act worries me. They seem too shaken in the present, so I’ll ask them again later.
Figaro: (That brat Mithra. What did he do?)
The mother of Rutile and Mitile Flores is the Great Witch Tiletta. She was a brutal, bold, and capricious woman. She liked those who were strong. She liked those who were gentle and kind. She liked those who were good looking too.
Having such a temper, she once told me that she loved me. It was before she met Mithra. According to her, I was handsome and powerful even if not at Oz’ level. Compared to the wizards around me, I was a kind one too.
I quite liked her myself. However, we could never become lovers because we knew each other too well. As soon as there was an opening, we would take the other’s life. Therefore, no matter how much we liked each other, there was no trust between us. Eventually, Tiletta married a human and lived in Southern Country. Even then, she never trusted me until the very end, likely because she thought I would kill Mitile.
Figaro: I see. I’ll stop asking now. Do you want to have a rest before heading out, Rutile?
Rutile: No, I’m fine. I can go right away.
Rutile wipes away his tears with the back of his hand and smiles softly. He seems to be himself again.
Figaro: Remember not to overdo it, won’t you. Well then, shall we go?
We mount our brooms and fly into the sky with our magic.
[In the sky]
Lennox: Oh, it’s Mithra.
Lennox whispers as he is flying over the Magic Manor. Mithra is looking up at us. I reflexively tense up when I sense his gaze. There’s no way to tell if he’s going to appear in front of us right in next second and launch an attack.
However, the reactions of the Flores brothers are different. Rutile seems regretful, while Mitile’s eyes are shining. I know what happened the moment I see their expressions.
Figaro: (That Mithra… So he attempted to feed Rutile and Mitile mana stones, huh)
Wizards turn to stones when they die. And it can happen that eating mana stones will increase a wizard’s power. In the past, it was a matter of course that wizards eat mana stones. However, it seems that the young wizards of today refuse to do that. They want to bury the stones in the ground the way one would do the bones of humans. Maurice Flores, Tiletta’s husband, buried her stone in a grave too. Except for a part of it.
I remember that night when I talked to Mister Flores, who was a local teacher. It was a surreal night that was all at once sad and absurd.
[Flashback]
Maurice: …I can’t believe it. Tiletta has passed away.
Figaro: My condolence. I understand what you’re feeling right now. Tiletta was a long-time acquaintance with me too.
Maurice: I wonder if I can raise Rutile and the baby all by myself.
Figaro: Everyone in town will help you. I’ll do everything I can too. Mister Flores.. No, Maurice, I’m sorry for bringing up this topic at a time like this. However, this is an issue I’d like to settle early.
Maurice: Oh, that’s right. I’ll have to get it together and hold a proper funeral for her.
Figaro: There’s that too, but what are you going to do about Tiletta’s mana stone?
Maurice: What… do you mean?
Figaro: So you want to bury her stone in a grave? It’s become common for wizards to be buried lately, right?
Maurice: …Yes… I think…
Figaro: I see. I get it. However, her stone will definitely be dug up again. She was a powerful witch, you know.
Maurice: You mean her grave will be robbed? I’ve heard that mana stones are as precious as jewels.
Figaro: No, what I mean is people who were close to her will come to eat her stones, like Mithra or the twins.
Maurice: …..
Figaro: That’s how we wizards mourn someone. Of course, there’s also the sentiment that one shouldn’t let another wizard get their hand on a high quality stone. Therefore, perhaps it’ll be better to leave aside part of her stone before it gets dug up? You don’t want her grave to be ruined, right?
Maurice: ….Uhm… yes….
Figaro: Thank you. There’s one more thing. Besides the wizards who were close to Tiletta, there will be others who come to rob her grave too.
Maurice: You mean wizards?
Figaro: Indeed. It won’t be mourning for that lot though. Those who simply are on the lookout for high quality mana stones will sense its power and dig it up. You’d want to have protection against them, right?
Maurice: Yes….
Figaro: Got it. In that case, will you be fine with me casting the barrier?
Maurice: Barrier?
Figaro: I’ll place on her grave a curse-like thing so that it won’t be disturbed.
Part 13.5 On the topic of eating mana stones
Maurice: A… curse
Figaro: Oh… I suppose you wouldn’t want another man to cast a barrier on your wife’s grave? If that’s the case then sorry. Feel free to just say what you feel directly. I’m not really in touch with the sentiments of modern people.
Maurice: …….My apologies…. I feel…..
Figaro: Oh, sorry! You don’t look so good, Mister Flores. You haven’t had a good rest for a while, I suppose. Perhaps I’ve been talking too much all of a sudden. I just thought I must protect Tiletta’s stone.
Maurice: Please don’t worry. It’s me who should apologize for being so agitated. And here I thought I was aware that our ways of thinking were different when I married a wizard.
Figaro: It is what it is. Even fellow humans or fellow wizards think about the same thing differently.
Maurice: Doctor Figaro, may I ask you one question?
Figaro: Sure. Please ask as much as you like.
Maurice: Are you going to eat Tiletta’s stone too?
Figaro: I intend to, but do you mind that?
Maurice: ……..
Figaro: In any case, I’d like Rutile to have some if possible.
Maurice: Ru…. Rutile is Tiletta’s son though?!
Figaro: It’s because he’s her son that I plan to do that! Uhm, I won’t do it if you are so uncomfortable. I think that’s Tiletta’s wish though.
Maurice: *cries* That’s so terrible.
Figaro: Please don’t cry, Mister Maurice. What about me casting the barrier? Do you dislike that too? Since it may feel too much like you’re being cheated on and such.
Maurice: *sobs* But her grave will be robbed if you don’t do that though?
Figaro: It will be thoroughly ransacked, because she was a powerful wizard.
Maurice: *cries*
Figaro: P- please don’t cry.
[End flashback]
In the end, we didn’t have Rutile consume any of Tiletta’s mana stone. Of course, we didn’t feed it to Mitile who was still a baby either.
The Northern wizard Mithra made a promise to Tiletta to protect them. Maybe that’s why he attempts to feed them mana stones so that they get stronger. He’s terrified that someone will do something to them. I myself will kill them first if I want to get rid of Mithra so that he’ll lose his magic.
Of course, my sentiments are a different matter. Both Rutile and Mitile are adorable. I’d like to support them until they become adults.
Figaro: (Since it’s Mithra, the stone he wanted to feed them must have been good quality. For those with magic at the level of Rutile and Mitile, their hearts will be destroyed if they’re fed stones that are too powerful. I must sit Mithra and both brothers down for a proper talk. Especially Mitile. It’s necessary to explain that to him carefully.)
Based on what I’ve seen of what was shown on Mitile’s face, he doesn’t seem to have as much aversion to eating mana stones as Rutile. Mitile admires powerful wizards and wants to be like them, so he is always diligent in his study and training. However, there’s an ominous prophecy about him. He will be the ruin of Southern wizards.
The prophecy came from the Northern twins. And their prophecies always come true.
Even so, I want to delay the day that tragic future comes, no matter how little. My heart hurts every time I think about Mitile.
Figaro: (Mitile is such a good boy. Should something happen, I won’t ask someone else to do the deed. I’ll do it myself. I have had the same thought before. Ah, that’s right. That was about Oz).
[At the market]
Rutile: There’re so many people here today. I can feel that the residents of the city are becoming lively again!
When we arrive at the Central City, Rutile has cheered up again.
Lennox: Everywhere was in ruins just a short while ago, but the city is like how it was again.
Mitile: The people of Central Country are so positive! I can feel that when I help them.
Figaro: That’s right. It’s because of such positivity that they lend us an empty house that was destroyed.
Mitile: Doctor Figaro, is that empty house the one we cleaned up a while ago?
Figaro: That one, yes.
I smile with my whole face and mention a certain thing to make Mitile happy.
Figaro: Mitile, you made a table with Leno from the leftover materials, right?
Mitile: Yes. We finished cleaning the yard, so I thought there should be a place to rest.
Figaro: The person who let us use the house was delighted to see your work. He said that it’s impressive that in Southern Country, even a young boy is so good with handicraft. He also said that in the part where lots of people coming and going of Central Country, there’re those who abandoned their houses to avoid the Calamity this year, so he’s happy to see that you didn’t throw away the scrap materials from those houses but did your best to make use of them instead. That’s why he offered us the house that we repaired to use as we like.
Mitile’s eyes shine brightly. I’m happy to give him encouragement too.
Part 13.6 Wishing for happiness
There’s something I’d like to impart to Mitile slowly, carefully, which is that the glory of a wizard isn’t just in how much magical power they have. I’d like him to know that ‘you have qualities that make you a great wizard already’.
Mitile: That’s right. We make use of everything in City of Cloud, no matter how small they are.
Figaro: I know. Your idea to use the bathtub that had a hole on it as a container for growing plants was brilliant. Thank you, Mitile. Thank to your hard work that we have a home now.
Mitile: Ehehe
Mitile smiles happily. As his smile is like it shines from behind tears, I reflect on the situation of the day. I don’t want Mitile to become an unhappy wizard in the future. Perhaps I have been too overwhelmed by that sentiment and thus put too much restriction on him.
Figaro: (Even if gaining great power would bring about misfortune in the future, Mitile has his own freedom. Accordingly, it is his freedom to wish for growth. I wonder if it’s a mistake to monitor how much he grows and suppress his desire to fly higher? Even if there’s nothing but ruins waiting for him down the road.)
For a moment, I see the face of Oz before he became an adult in Mitile’s profile. I once thought the same thing about Oz. However, I was very careful with him because he was a threat. What will it be like with Mitile? Will he become a threat to me someday?
I wish for Mitile’s happiness. And Oz’s. Faust’s too. Master Snow and Master White. Lennox. Tiletta. Rutile. Arthur. I love them all. And so I wish for their happiness.
[At the magic house]
Mitile: Whoa, everything is so tidy and pretty!
Lennox: The people in the neighborhood gave this building a new paint. A full makeover.
Rutile: It’s like we have a new home! We really can use this place as we like?
Figaro: Yeah. Eventually there will be a sign for this building. What should we put on it?
Lennox: Would “Wizards’ House” work?
Rutile: I think so! I’ve seen places in the Southern Country with signs like, ‘There’re wizards here. Feel free to ask for help’. That’d be easy for everyone to understand, right?
Figaro: That’s a good idea. The people here will be surprised at first, but they’ll get used to this house.
Mitile: Brother, please have a look! I made this table.
Rutile: Whoa, it looks great! You and Mister Leno always pay attention to the smallest details, so the household tools you make are really pretty.
Mitile: But the nail is a bit bent here.
Rutile: Don’t worry about that. If it were me, all of the table’s legs would be bent.
Mitile: Hehe, it’d be hard to sit around such a table!
The laughter of the Flores brings a smile to my face. Then, many people appear from inside the house. They are the residents of the Central Country’s Capital, who gave their best for the restoration of the city.
Central Country citizen: Hi there, Doctor Figaro! The wizard friends too.
Figaro: Good day to you too. Thank you for the beautiful house.
Central Country citizen: It’s us who should thank you. You’ve helped us a lot.
Central Country citizen: I thought you’d use this house as your residence here, but apparently you’re going to use it as, what is it, a gathering place?
Figaro: That’s right. We’d like to have a place where people who need the help of magic can easily visit.
???: So this is something akin to a general store of wizards?
Suddenly, someone cuts into our conversation. That’s a youth I’ve never seen before. One can say that he’s still a boy. He has refined and bright manners. Like Mitile when he explores a new place, the boy’s eyes are shining.
???: My apologies for interrupting. I am Luchino Addinson, an aspiring reporter.
Rutile: Nice to meet you, Luchino. I’m Rutile Flores. You write for a newspaper?
Luchino: I write up the latest information and send it to interested customers. Information is valuable after all. Perhaps newspapers will be the force that moves the world. Reporter is a wonderful profession!
There’s an innocent admiration and pride in Luchino’s attitude about his work. He draws his shoulders together as if embarrassed.
Luchino: Pardon my rudeness. I got carried away. Please continue.
Part 13.7: A chilling reunion
Lennox: It’s my turn then. I’m Lennox. Nice to meet you.
Mitile: How do you do. My name is Mitile. I’m Rutile’s younger brother.
Figaro: Hi there. I’m Figaro.
Mitile is still on guard as he looks at Luchino, who stares at us with undisguised enthusiasm. This kid is the type who wants to have an encounter with wizards.
Luchino: I’m very interested about wizards so it’s great to meet you.
Bull’s eye. And from his clothes, this kid is probably the scion of some noble family.
Luchino: When I heard that a gathering place for wizards is being set up, I couldn’t help myself and show up here uninvited. You Sage’s Wizards like His Highness Prince Arthur and Cain the former knight are saviors of our world. Thank you for protecting us. I haven’t managed to find a place that publishes my investigative articles yet, but I would like to write about everyone. So please allow me to assist you!
Luchino makes a graceful bow. He gives off the impression of an honest, decent kid. I place my hand on the back of Mitile, who is still tense, and smile at Luchino.
Figaro: Thank you, Luchino. Let’s leave the talk about your investigative reporting aside for the time being. Please be Mitile’s friend first.
Luchino: I’ll be glad to! Hi, Mitile. I’ve heard a lot about Southern Country, so I’d like to visit someday.
Mitile: Really? You can talk to me about anything! How about the Town of Cloud?
Luchino: Town of Cloud! I’ve heard about that! It’s the most prosperous place in Southern Country, right? Please tell me everything!
As the talk went on, Mitile gradually lowered his guard. Rutile looked at the two boys with a smile on his face.
Lennox: He writes for a newspaper? You’re fine with that, Doctor Figaro?
Figaro: There’ll be slanders against us, so it’s good to have someone on our side. That kid seems pretty decent. I can’t wait to see what he’ll write about me. Maybe ‘the gentle healing hand of Southern Country, Doctor Figaro’…
???: Milord Figaro.
Suddenly, a low voice calls out behind me. A chill ran down my back. I didn’t not sense the presence of this person at all until now.
Figaro: …..tsk.
A hand grabs my shoulder before I turn around. That hand is even bigger than Lennox’s, its skin dry and white. It can likely snap the neck of children or women with no effort. I can see a leather bangle fitting snugly around the thick wrist.
Gulping, I raise my head. I am quite tall myself, but that person is such a burly giant that I would need to lift my chin to see his face. His expressionless eyes are of a faint blue, like a blade of ice.
On this peaceful day under the shade of the trees, of all people, the person standing behind me is a huge Northern wizard.
Tension fills my whole body, but I show that person a smile.
Figaro: Hi there! You must be Isaac, if my eyes don’t deceive me.
Isaac: It’s been a while, Lord Figaro.
Just as he said, the last time we met was 100 years ago or even longer.
Isaac is a Northern wizard. He isn’t on the same level as Bradley, but still strong enough that I can’t lower my guard around him. If he is in the mood, he can erase all traces of life from a part of this city in the blink of an eye.
There’s something strange about Isaac. His indifferent eyes of light color reveal none of what he is thinking as he seizes my hand. Holding it tightly with both hands, he stares fixedly at me.
Isaac: My lord, you’re the Wise One as always. I am… I can’t be like that. No matter how much time has passed, I can’t manage it.
Isaac sinks down with my hand still in his. He flops on the floor then immediately wriggles up in a kneeling position. He tugs at my hand as if about to place it on the tip of his nose. Probably he wants to assume the pose of a supplicant offering a prayer.
Isaac: Lord Figaro, o Lord Figaro, I did something foolish again. I… I just realized. I’m going to die soon. I can feel that. Therefore, I’d like to become smart, if only for a moment, before I die. I want to understand this world.
Isaac: And now I meet you here.
Isaac smiles, but his eyes, which are like those of a killer, do not.
Part 13.8 Walking a hungry bear around town
I think to myself that what’s going on is nothing but trouble. Isaac is a dangerous wizard. He’s short-tempered and violent. I’ve seen him make sure that those who mocked him would never be able to laugh again without a change in his expression. I’ve also seen him turn clever wizards into stones then ate them when he grew restless and furious. Apparently he thought doing so would help him become clever too.
Figaro: (Good grief. Isaac isn’t a wizard who should be allowed to stay in a city with so many people like this).
It isn’t that Isaac is intentionally cruel. Compared to the average Northern lot, he is quite gentle. He is different from them in that despite being born a Northern wizard, he loves learning. He once said smart people seemed to have an easy, unruffled life, so if he could understand the world and its workings, he would definitely be able to live without his heart being in disarray.
I like that side of Isaac, which is so earnest, pitiful, and foolish.
Lennox: Doctor Figaro.
I realize that the Southern wizards are looking at me. With some hesitation, I pull back my hand from his.
Figaro: Come, Isaac. Let’s talk face to face.
Isaac: Lord Figaro.
Figaro: Please call me Doctor Figaro.
I whisper in Isaac’s ear and tug at his arm to get him to stand up. As he doesn’t move, I clasp his back.
Figaro: Stand up. You’re attracting attention.
Isaac: Yes, sir.
Figaro: Leno, sorry to bother you, but this guy is my acquaintance from before. I’d like to have a chat with him. Can I leave this place’s business to you?
Lennox: Got it. Be careful.
Mitile: Wow, Doctor Figaro’s friend is a giant. I’ve never seen anyone as big as him.
Rutile: Welcome. I just brewed some tea. Please help yourself if it’s to your liking.
Isaac: …..
Isaac fixes his gaze at Rutile upon hearing his soft voice. Bright and gentle Rutile is just the type of person he likes. I hastily shake my head.
Figaro: Don’t do anything, Isaac. They belong to Mithra.
They don’t belong to Mithra at all, but that’s the quickest way to get the point to a Northern wizard.
Isaac: Mithra? Mithra the Northern wizard?
Figaro: The very same one.
Isaac: But… he invited me to tea.
Figaro: Isaac, I’m warning you because I like you. If you drink that tea, Mithra will kill you.
Isaac: The tea…
Figaro: Don’t come to this house again. Let’s go.
Isaac: Understood.
I walk through the busy street with Isaac in tow.
Isaac: Have you been here for a long time, Lord Figaro?
Figaro: Doctor Figaro.
Isaac: Doctor Figaro.
Figaro: Well, I live in Southern Country, but I’ve been here a lot recently.
Isaac: Hehe, people talked to me. Lots of them…. They gave me things like flowers and water too.
Figaro: That’s nice, isn’t it? The Central Country is at the heart of the continent, so the people here are sociable.
Isaac: *chuckles* They will talk to me again, perhaps.
Figaro: I suppose so.
Isaac’s giant-like stature draws people’s eyes to him. With his coarse hair and the square set of his shoulders, he’s like a hungry bear that is on the prowl for food. The good people who have been earnestly giving their best effort for the restoration of the city are terrified by his appearance. The mothers with children in their arms as well as the young men who pull the carts full of goods all pale with fear and vacate the street. Every time that happens, the rough, short-tempered Isaac is irritated.
Isaac: They gave me gifts just a while ago.
Figaro: It’s the middle of the day. Everyone is busy. Besides that, don’t take people’s good will for granted.
Isaac: …I see. Even so, if they give me something, I’ll share a small portion of what I get with you, Lord Figaro.
No matter how many times I correct him, Isaac keeps calling me Lord Figaro. Eventually, I give up getting him to change how he addresses me.
Figaro: Thank you. That isn’t necessary though.
Isaac: Apologies.
It isn’t that Isaac wants a physical thing. He has the strength to seize whatever he likes. Maybe what’s happening is that he likes this city and wants to be welcome by its people. Perhaps he takes the charity he received as people liking him, and he wants to show me that.
Yet the townspeople are avoiding him.
I understand the feeling of both sides. Of course people would want to protect what they hold dear from what they find scary or abnormal.
Part 13.9 Even as I want to be around people
On the other hand, at times like this, I feel like I could hear the roar of the sea.
Whether I walk into the waves of the freezing ocean or mingle in the crowd of people coming and going, there’s no overcoming the loneliness I feel. Even as there is no promised paradise for me, my soul will freeze if I don’t keep walking ahead.
Figaro: (I want to let Isaac stay in this city, but I’m afraid there’ll be bloodshed soon. Isaac isn’t used to living in such a crowded place like here. Shall I force him to return to Northern Country before problem arises? Or perhaps…)
Isaac: Please have a look, Lord Figaro.
Figaro: Yes?
Isaac holds out something to me. In the palms of his huge hands is a tattered book.
I blink and ask in surprise.
Figaro: So you’ve learnt to read?
The corners of Isaac’s mouth curl up. It’s an awkward, bashful expression of a smile.
Isaac: Yes.
I smile as I reach out and pull him to a place where we won’t hinder the traffic.
There’re many illiterate people in the world. It’s only about one hundred years ago that education started to be provided to those who aren’t of the nobility, and that’s mostly in places with rich culture. Farmers only need to know how to farm, hunters how to hunt, artisans how to make their wares, and that’s enough to go on living.
Besides, for a wizard who can live by themselves in the North, it’s no problem at all if they can’t read and write. However, Isaac loves to study. I like this side of his too.
Figaro: Let me have a look. Oh, this is impressive. You can read this much already?
Isaac: Is it a difficult book?
Figaro: Not really. A child who knows the letters can understand it. But you couldn’t even write your own name before, right? Well done, Isaac. Reading is fun, isn’t it?
While I smile at him, Isaac widens his eyes and takes in a deep breath, as if affected by what I said. He looks just like Mitile before. Isaac must have been working hard, so he is filled with joy when I praise him.
How sweet and pitiful, I think.
Isaac: Thank you, Lord Figaro. I’m very, very happy.
Figaro: I’m glad too. Where did you learn to read and write from?
Isaac: In Northern Country. Then in Central Country. I was really frustrated, but I tried to bear with it. There were times I couldn’t really manage that though.
Figaro: Did someone teach you?
Isaac: I begged the travelers. They had no home, you know. So…
Figaro: Ah, so they taught you in exchange of some coins.
Isaac: Oh, well, you can say that. After that, when I came to Central Country, the humans gave me lots of books too. They said, ‘if you want to read then we’ll give you books’. From time to time, I talk to them and ask about how to read.
Figaro: I see. Not many Northern wizards can manage that.
Isaac: Haha.
Isaac laughs. As he does that, even his expressionless eyes look like a glittering icy lake. Even so, his hair and clothes are dirty. No matter how much I taught him, he never gets into the habit of washing himself and his clothes.
Figaro: Isaac, please clean up. I taught you the way to cleanse yourself with magic already, didn’t I?
Isaac: But I hate bathing. It’s no problem if I don’t keep clean.
Figaro: Even if it’s not a problem for you, it is to those around you. They’ll run away from you.
Isaac: Why would they do that?
Figaro: Because bad odor and unkempt looks are unpleasant. It’s unhygienic and can make you sick too.
Isaac: I find it unpleasant when children laugh out loud too. They always do that so suddenly and startle me. Sometimes, their laughter brightens the mood, but I always get irritated right away. What makes me different from them?
Figaro: Human lifespan is short, so they remember their childhood and thus relate to the children. When they see children laugh, most people will be happy.
Isaac: Not me. So they run away from me because they can’t relate to a being like me? This is so infuriating. They haven’t even met me. If that’s the case, I won’t go out of my way to make myself clean. If they want to look at me with disgust then go ahead. That would be a relief.
Figaro: Why would you do something that people can’t accept even though you want to be among them?
Isaac huffs. He gives me a stare full of hostility and hatred.
Isaac: Give me an answer I can be satisfied with then. You’re the wise one, Lord Figaro. You must know the correct answer, right? Is there any reason they tolerate children who suddenly laugh out loud but they can’t accept me? Please tell me! You should know why!
Isaac immediately pesters me for an answer. With utmost patience, I ask him.
Figaro: Isaac, there’re many reasons for that. Besides, there isn’t necessarily one ‘correct’ answer. Depending on the time and place, the answer will be different. That’s why you must learn why by yourself.
Isaac: You’re terrible for putting on airs like that. You know I will comply with what you teach me properly.
I feel fed up in the face Isaac’s resentment. Sad and hurt too. It is unexpectedly hard to find someone who would look at you sincerely and listen to what you say with a pure heart and a keen mind, even though they call me ‘Lord Figaro’.
Isaac: Lord Figaro, please hurry up and tell me. I’d like to be knowledgeable about this world.
Figaro: There’s no point if you only know something. Isaac, you only want to know the reason so that you won’t be hated. However, that’s the same as wanting to know about everyone’s temperament or the entire world’s history. You must keep that in mind.
Isaac: I get it. You hate me. You should’ve just said that.
Figaro: You’re mistaken.
Isaac: You’re lying. Even so, I’ll do as you say because I never go against your words. Your teachings are more precious than any mana stone to me. I love studying with you.
Figaro: You’re lying. You only want to get from me the logic and reasoning that validate you.
Isaac: That’s a cruel thing to say. I don’t do that.
Figaro: The fact is, you forgot what I told you before. If you don’t keep yourself clean, you’ll get sick. Look, your limbs are rotting.
Isaac: ….Oh, because of that….
Isaac’s sharp eyes become clouded with despair. That reminds me, he did say that he’s going to die. Is he in the same situation as me?
Figaro: Are you feeling unwell?
Isaac: That’s right. I can’t really describe it, but there’re times my body can’t move the way I want it to. That bothers me so much that I hit myself, so that part has been hurting all this time.
Figaro: What a foolish thing to do. Where did you hit yourself? Let me see.
Isaac: Are you worried for me?
Figaro: Well, I’m a doctor at the moment.
Isaac: Please cure my foolishness too.
I touch his stomach and look up. He is certainly not as much of a fool as he thinks. He has the desire to learn and the will to move ahead. He has worked hard and become literate. Even if he’s violent, crude, and temperamental, he has been trying to be patient.
Figaro: I’m not calling your foolish. What I mean is, it isn’t good to hurt yourself.
Isaac: I don’t like any of this.
Isaac makes the face of someone in utmost pain. More than sadness, what’s in his expression is helplessness and loss of desire for anything. He wants to end his life here and now.
Isaac: That’s enough. I’m done for. I wanted to change in the end. That’s why I… Aaaah….
Figaro: Isaac?
Part 13.10 The question with no answer in sight
Suddenly, Isaac’s leather bangle catches my eyes. There is a thin chain on the bangle to fasten it to the wrist, and on the chain is a small blue stone. This craftmanship is too dainty for his taste. There’s the presence of a wizard in the stone.
Isaac: I keep doing things that I don’t know the cause of. I keep thinking in circle about what I can’t find the answer. I’ve had enough of being fooled!
He suddenly gets angry and hits the stone wall. Right away, there’s a scream from the direction of the market.
A man: W- what is that?!
A woman: Aaaah, my clothes suddenly burst open.
Again and again, the canvas that covers a stall or a box that holds fruit is broken, as if cut through by an invisible blade. That’s Isaac’s doing.
Figaro: ……
I take out my magic focus without a word. Isaac immediately pales. He holds his head and crouches down where he is.
Isaac: No, it’s not me! I didn’t mean to! I have been trying to be patient. I’ve been enduring everything like you taught me.
Isaac: I can’t stand it anymore! I’m fed up with it! I bear with it, again and again and again, but only for you to abandon me, Lord Figaro.
Isaac’s face crumbles weakly as if to cry as he opens his mouth widely. My heart hurts when I see him like that. ‘How pitiful,” I think. I stand there completely at a loss like a fool. Perhaps I should finish him off right here.
Faust was an ideal disciple. A noble, high-minded hero with pen and sword in accord. I once planned to teach him everything I knew, because I had the feeling that doing so would help me connect with this world once again.
However, perhaps the people who actually need my guidance are those like Isaac.
All of the sudden, Isaac prostrates himself on the ground. He desperately clings onto my feet like a man drowning at sea.
Isaac: I beg you, Lord Figaro, I beg you. If you’re going to kill me, then please teach me one last thing.
Figaro: What do you want to know?
Isaac: What is happiness? How can one become happy? Why was I born into this world? What should I do so that something nice happens to me? What should I do to become smart? If I ate the stone of the Western wizard Murr, would people praise me like they do for him?
Isaac: I… The only thing I wish for is to be all-knowing like you, Lord Figaro.
Isaac: I would like to see the world with the feeling that I understand everything just once before I turn to stone. ‘Oh so that’s how it is’. ‘I see, so it’s like that’. I only want the ease of heart that comes with knowing.
I let out a sigh and look up. The sky is so clear and blue and unbelievably beautiful. If I knew the answer for what he is asking, I wouldn’t be all alone here and now. However, I will only make Isaac despair if I tell him that. So I smile gently at him.
Figaro: I’m not turning you into stone. Please learn the answers for your questions by yourself, little by little. Please continue your study. After all, you have started reading books. There’s still lots of time left for you. See, beautiful days are waiting ahead.
Isaac’s huge back shakes like a leaf. I quietly let out a sigh as I patted it. As my helpful words seem to be accepted, I can’t help but feel that I’m lying.
‘Everything will definitely work out fine.’ In general, that’s really the case if you don’t ask for much. However, maybe we don’t really want to take the easy path.
Isaac is pitiful. He’s also quick to quarrel and prone to lose his temper. He’s nothing but a threat to this city. I can’t be sure if he won’t cause a disaster to the people here. And if a wizard is the cause of a disaster, Vincent won’t be so agreeable anymore. Arthur’s standing will be in danger. On top of that, the hopes of the Southern wizards, who have been talking and working with the local people at the Wizards’ House, will all be crushed.
However…
If Isaac is dangerous, then Oz and Mithra are even more so. Owen, Bradley, and I myself can all destroy this city if we want to. Even so, we are free to go anywhere we want. What’s the difference between us and Isaac? Is it because we are Sage’s Wizards?
And Mitile too. His existence means the ruins of all Southern wizards in the future. Does that make it right to rob him of the chance to grow that he wishes for?
Mitile and Isaac are the same. They want to understand the world and to improve themselves. They want people to love them.
I want to grant them their freedom. However, doing so may lead to tragedy down the road. That’s a problem I’ve been facing countless times since a thousand years ago: Should I eliminate one dangerous individual for the safety of the majority? Or even dangerous living beings deserve to be granted the same freedom as everyone else?
More than everything…
Until when am I planning to manage this world, even though I don’t really understand the meaning of ‘love’ or ‘happiness’?
Card story: The refreshing fragrance of our shared memory
[Lounge at the Manor]
Riquet: No matter which page I open, everything is so beautiful. What an amazing magical item this “Book of Sceneries” is.
Akira: I feel the same. It’s a real joy that I’ve managed to collect so many memories of the places I visited with everyone here. I’m so lucky that Murr let me have this book!
One day, Riquet and I was going through a certain book that had once been in Murr’s storage. It could preserve on its pages the sceneries one saw.
Riquet: With this book, we can see that you have had many adventures, Master Sage.
Akira: That’s right. Thanks to everyone, I have had many unforgettable moments. Speaking of, I’d like to use this Book of Sceneries with you too. Do you have any place you want to save memory of?
Riquet: Uhm, the places I have visited with you all leave a deep impression. Oh, there’s somewhere that’d be nice too, in that case…
Riquet: My apologies. I can’t come to a decision right away.
Akira: Please don’t worry about it. Just take your time and think it over. I’d love it to be place that would bring a smile to you and me whenever we open this book to look at it.
Riquet: Master Sage, what you’ve just said gave me an idea of where I’d like to go!
Akira: Eh, what I’ve just said?
Riquet: That’s right! Master Sage, shall we go to the forest where Derrick lives?
[Derrick’s cottage]
The next day, we travelled to the forest where Derrick and Hermes lived together.
Riquet: Hello, Derrick! Hello, Hermes!
Derrick: Oh, it’s you guys! Long time to see!
Derrick came to greet us as soon as we called out to him. A little owl was perching on his shoulder.
Riquet: Oh, so you’re in owl form today, Hermes.
Hermes: Yeah, I went to check the roof of the house just now. This form is more convenient for that.
Hermes’ real form was a wizard. Because of a certain incident, he once hid his identity and stayed around Derrick. After meeting Riquet and the other wizards, he told Derrick the truth and a mutual companionship was born.
Riquet: We have a favor to ask of you today.
Riquet opened the Book of Sceneries. As he showed Derrick and Hermes the pictures in the book, he asked for permission to preserve the scenery of the forest.
Derrick: Sure. You guys have helped us a lot, so feel free to use this forest for that if you like.
Riquet: Thank you so much! If possible, please tell me the way to this spot. I’d like to use the Book of Sceneries there.
Riquet: Master Sage, this location will be my surprise for you.
Akira: Eh, a surprise?
Derrick: Not that we mind, but is it okay to tell them about your surprise like this?
Riquet: It’s fine. I’m doing this because I’d like to express my feelings properly.
Riquet: In any case, I hope you’ll enjoy where we are about to go, Master Sage!
Akira: Ahaha, thank you. I can’t wait to see it!
After Riquet finished talking to Derrick, we parted with them and headed to the place Riquet had in mind.
Riquet: Our destination is a short walk from here. Let’s use this occasion to enjoy the nature on our way too.
Akira: That reminds me. I haven’t thanked you for coming up with a surprise for me. Thanks for being so kind to me, Riquet.
Riquet: Oh, it’s me who…
Riquet: …!!! Master Sage, over there!
Akira: Eh?
Following Riquet’s line of sight, I saw a huge boar the size of my back. Roaring ferociously, it walked towards us.
Akira: (We’re screwed if that boar attacks us!)
Even if I told myself to calm down, my legs were glued to the ground by fear. I couldn’t move an inch, as if my body had turned into lead.
Riquet: ….
Riquet: Sunrotea Edif!
[In the sky]
Riquet: We should be fine here, I think.
Akira: Thank you for saving me. That was quick thinking of you to summon your broom.
Riquet: You’re welcome. I was taken aback too. Luckily I could put what Oz taught me in practice!
Akira: Oz’s teaching?
Riquet: That’s right. The other day he taught me “Don’t insist on fighting. Save yourself first. Then save people important to you. Everything is over if you turn to stone. If someone important to you becomes a hostage, your mind will be disturbed and that will guarantee your destruction.”
Akira: (He’s so casual about imitating how Oz talks)
As we were regaining our composure, Riquet looked down at the forest below us.
Riquet: I wonder if we can get down there now. It is impossible to find the path Derrick told me from the sky. What do you think, Master Sage? If it’s still too scary to get back to the ground, let’s have a chat here for a bit longer.
Akira: Is that okay? Perhaps we should get to our destination as soon as possible. I’ll be fine.
Riquet: No need to rush. What is important is that you are safe and sound. Besides, it was in this forest that I learnt this: it happens that kind-hearted people may not be able to say what they really feel out of consideration for those around them, so I should make it easy for my companion to tell me how they feel.
Akira: Thank you, Riquet. To tell the truth, my heart is still thumping, so I’d like to chat if you don’t mind.
Riquet: Certainly! I am glad you let me know.
[In the forest]
Riquet: We have reached our destination, Master Sage! This is the place I’d like to take you to.
Akira: Wow, so many red flowers here! The scent is amazing. But why do you choose this place?
Riquet: I’d like you to experience this fragrance.
Akira: This fragrance?
Riquet: Yes. The last time we went to this forest, I brought back these red flowers as souvenirs. Figaro told me “The scent of these flowers can heal fatigue”. Therefore, I’d like to make these flowers a little present for you, because you are always so kind to us.
Akira: So that’s what have been on your mind. Thank you for doing this for me. I’m really happy.
Riquet: Great! In that case, let’s use the Book of Sceneries here.
Riquet: Sunrotea Edif
The Book of Sceneries gave off a faint light when Riquet cast his spell. Then, the image of us together with the scenery of the forest appeared vividly on the white page.
Akira: What a beautiful picture! Huh? For some reason, the picture gives off a lovely scent too.
Riquet: Nice! So my second surprise is a success!
Akira: Eh? You have another surprise?
Riquet: *Giggles* I asked Oz to teach me the spell to bind the fragrance together with the image once I decided where to go. I failed many times during practice so it’s a relief that I succeeded here! Unfortunately the fragrance can’t last very long, but hopefully we will always recall this wonderful place when we look at the picture together.
Akira: …
His kindness filled my chest with warmth.
Akira: Thank you so much, Riquet. I’m really, really happy, so much I can’t put into words. You really show that you think of what is best for someone and act accordingly with your surprises and our chat on the broom just now. That’s really admirable of you.
Riquet: I am really, really happy to earn your respect, Master Sage!
Holding the book in my arm, I looked at him and we smiled at each other.
Akira: (I’ll write all about what happens today in the Book of Sceneries, so that I’ll never forget it).
The irreplaceable memory the two of us made together had a refreshing citrus-like fragrance.
Card episode: A dreamlike house
Akira: Hello, Riquet. Are you studying?
Riquet: …..
Akira: Uhm, Riquet?
Riquet: Whoa! My apologies, Master Sage. I was absorbed in the book I am reading.
Akira: It’s me who should apologize for startling you. What is the book about?
Riquet: It is a picture book Rutile lends me. The more I practice reading and writing, the more books I can read and that is really fun. I have been reading this book since noon.
Akira: Oh I see. Do you have a favorite picture book or a story yet?
Riquet: Uhm, I have so many that I can’t decide which. Among the recent stories, I love the one about Hansel and Gretel that you told me. A whole house made from yummy cakes and candies! That’s just like a dream!
Akira: Ahaha I know right! I felt the same when I was small.
Riquet: However, there is one unacceptable detail in that story though.
Akira: An unacceptable detail?
Riquet: It’s the action of the evil witch. She created that house to lure children into her trap, right? If I had a house made of cakes and candies, I would make it a place where everyone can feel at ease and be happy. A place like the Magic Manor.
Akira: That’s very sweet idea. It’s just like you to think of something like that.
Riquet: Ehehe. That reminds me, I heard Owen once created a cake and candy house too. Maybe I should ask him about the way to make such a house when I finish reading this book.
Card story: To save the memory of today’s smiles
Akira: Thank you for your hard work during our mission today, Cain.
Cain: You worked very hard too. There was nothing dangerous, but the mission was taxing mentally.
Akira: That’s true.
Cain: The residents of that province were pretty unfriendly to wizards. We had no choice but to deal with that. Oh, I have an idea. If you don’t have any plan for tomorrow yet, shall we go to Seth’s Paradise to relax? Even if we can’t take a long vacation, let’s drink juice, ride sandboard, and forget our missions for a moment.
Akira: That would be nice! May I use the ‘Book of Sceneries’ for this occasion?
The ‘Book of Sceneries’ was a magical tool devised by Murr. By holding a blank page to a scene and apply magic, what one was seeing would be painted on the page. With this book, which Murr tossed to me with ‘I’m bored with it already so I’ll give it to you, I was preserving my memories with the wizards.
Akira: I’d like to save the scenery of Seth’s Paradise in this book as my memory with you. May I?
Cain: Sure. Let’s take the Book of Sceneries with us tomorrow.
Akira: I will! I can’t wait for the trip!
The next day, Cain and I asked Oz for help to take us and the Central wizards to Seth’s Paradise. Riquet and Arthur wanted to go to the ice-cream shop in town, so Cain and I parted way with them and Oz to have a walk around the lake.
Cain: Have you decided where you want to use the Book of Sceneries for yet?
Akira: Good question. Uhm…
Akira: (Looks like I’m still tired from the mission? I can’t come up with anything right away)
Cain: We still have lots of time. No need to decide in a hurry. Let’s play to our heart’s content first. You can make up your mind later. Come.
He gave me a leaf a size bigger than a fan that fell around nearby and some kind of fruit that looked like a walnut.
Akira: What an amazing leaf! How are we going to play with it?
Cain: You hold the leaf like this and pass the fruit to the other player by hitting it. It’s important to work together and keep the fruit up as long as possible in a rally.
Akira: (That sounds like badminton, I suppose?)
Cain: Among the Knights, this game is called ‘Off-duty Reward’. I used to play it when I had a day off. Want to give it a try?
Akira: Sure! That sounds fun!
Cain: Great! For this game, it’s the more the merrier, but playing in pair is nice too. Let’s go.
Brown-haired youth: Oh, you’re about to play ‘Off-duty Reward’?
As we just started our game, the young people who had been around in the nearby streets watched we play and called out.
Cain: You guys know this game too?
Black-haired youth: Most of us do. The Knights play this game whenever they come to our town. They look fun so we pick it up from them.
Brown-haired youth: When we heard that the Knights managed a rally of 300 turns, the game became very popular. Huh?
Akira: Uhm, what’s the matter? Why are you staring at Cain’s face like that?
Brown-haired youth: You with the red hair… Can it be you’re Knight Captain Cain of that great record?
Black-haired youth: That’s right. I think I’ve seen you play Off-duty Reward before.
Cain: Ah, you mean that time we kept the rally going on and on! Yeah, that’s me. I was indeed the Captain of the Knights then.
Brown-haired youth: I can’t believe it! I meet the star player of that great record! Allow me to shake your hand!
Cain: Ahaha, my pleasure.
Black-haired youth: Let me shake hands with you too! Oh, may we join you guys for a game?
Cain: Fine by me. How about you, Akira?
Akira: Sure! Since we have the chance, I’d like to try playing in a big group.
The youths: Thank you!
Resident: I just heard what you were talking about. You’re really that Cain?! Let me join you if you don’t mind!
Residence: Me too!
Akira: (So many people are coming all at once! Cain is just like a sport superstar, with how people gather around him like that)
Cain: Let’s all play then! Since we have the fortune to meet each other here, let me shake hands with all of you first.
We formed a big circle and began our game of Off-duty Reward.
Cain: Let’s start then! Here I go!
We used the big leaf to hit the fruit back and forth and had fun with our rally.
Akira: Whoa, it’s coming this way!
Akira: (It’s hard to guess where the fruit may fall because it’s too light. The ground is full of sand so it’s hard to keep my balance too!)
Akira: I got this!
Cain: Nice, Akira!
Thus we kept our rally running through many counts.
Residents: Oh, sorry! I let it fall!
Cain: Don’t worry about that! Let’s try one more time.
Cain: Ah, before we start though, please come here for a bit, Master Sage?
Cain: It looks like you had an easier time to return the fruit when it came from your right side, maybe it’s a good idea to keep some space on your right side.
Akira: Oh, I get it now!
Akira: (Oh he’s right. I can return the fruit easier than before. I wouldn’t have noticed it by myself.)
Cain: You with the brown hair, I think you hit the fruit when it comes down better if you hold your racket like this.
Brown-haired youth: Oooh. Thank you!
With Cain’s advices, the rally kept getting longer and longer. And then…
Everyone: 47, 48, 49, …50!
We matched each other’s movements and completed a splendid rally of 50 turns.
The residents: Great! This is the first time we manage a rally like this! It’s all thanks to you, Cain!
Long-haired youth: This feels great! Thank you!
Cain: Oh!
Cain was surrounded by smiles as everyone jostled him until even the tip of his hair was in disarray. He smiled awkwardly.
Cain: It wasn’t all because of me though. All of you did your best together too.
Cain watched everyone congratulating each other with a smile. Then he suddenly looked at me.
Cain: That’s right! How about we use the Book of Sceneries now?
Akira: Ah! I was having so much fun with the game that I completely forgot about that.
Cain: Hahaha, my greatest wish is granted if you enjoy yourself so much. In that case, I’d like to keep the memory of your smile after playing to your heart’s content.
Akira: (Oh… Maybe he invited me to come here to play so that I forget what happened yesterday and cheer up).
Akira: Thank you so much, Cain. May I save the current scene in the Book of Sceneries as a souvenir? I’d like to have us in the view too.
Cain: Sure, I’d be glad to!
With a hearty nod, Cain opened the Book of Sceneries. He casually cast his spell and the book floated in front of us.
Cain: Shall we stand together? With this, we can look as many times as we like and remember how much fun we have today.
Akira: Sure! I’ll leave it to you then!
Residents: What are you two doing?
Akira: Uhm, this is… Oh, I have an idea! How about everyone here join us as a memento of today?
Cain: Good idea! Guys, please look and this book. And smile!
Cain: Gladius procella!
Cain cast his spell on the Book of Sceneries. Glowing with a faint light, the book vividly drew the image of all of us.
The youths: Oooh!
Akira: Thank you, Cain! The smiles of everyone here are so beautiful!
Cain: I’m glad. With this picture, no matter how much you look at it, you’ll remember today and be full of good cheer.
Cain gently caressed the cover of the book with a soft smile.
Cain: There’re all kinds of hard work and troubles that wear us down every day. In times like that, let’s look at this picture together and have a chat about today.
My heart was filled with warmth by the kindness in his voice.
Akira: Sure! I’ll keep the Book of Sceneries carefully, so that I can look back at this memory I have with you every time I want.
He and I smiled at each other, as I nodded resolutely and hugged the book, which was like a treasure to me.
Card episode: What he read when he was with the Knights?
Akira: (Oh, Cain is reading a book by the fountain. I wonder what it’s about.)
Cain: Huh? I feel someone is looking at me. Is that you, Master Sage? This is the first time I meet you this morning.
Akira: Sorry if I bother you. You seem so engrossed in your book. What is it about? It looks pretty thick.
Cain: It’s a story about a clever young man resolving an ancient mystery related to the legend of a hidden jewel. I lent Arthur a novel that I recommended to him, so he let me borrow this book in return.
Akira: Nice! If Arthur thinks you should read this book then it must be interesting. I’ve seen you read books a couple of times. Do you have any favorite story or legend?
Cain: The first thing that comes to my mind is the legends about Roland and Seth.
Akira: So stories about a knight and a warrior! You’ve told me about them before. Their stories are very cool.
Cain: Ahaha, I know right? They are stories that every knight would love. Oh, speaking of knights, there are certain stories that the guys in the Chivalric Order often pass around to each other.
Cain: …Ah no, that’s not the kind of thing fit for telling you.
Akira: Eh? You’ve just made me even more curious. Could you at least describe for me the general vibe of those stories?
Cain: Uhm.. They are naughty. Chloe and Rutile would love them, but Mitile and Riquet shouldn’t be allowed around them yet. Things like that.
Akira: ….Oh. I think I know what you mean.
Cain: Good thing you’re so sharp. If you want to know about those stories no matter what, try asking me again when I’m drunk.
Q1: With the exception of Oz, who acts as the teacher, the Central wizards are all young. We think that one of their charms is the contrast between the comedic ‘there's only fools here’ back-and-forths and the serious interactions that display Oz’s temperament. What are your thoughts when you write the Central wizards’ stories and how they act with each other?
A: The Central wizards are typically heroic, thoughtful, model student-like. As a result, fundamentally troubles don’t happen around them. However, from a story writing perspective, there will be no drama if there is no trouble. Then, as we think ‘let’s stir up some trouble’, the Central wizards are on very solid ground, so they won’t be shaken if the trouble doesn’t pack enough of a punch. As a result, when writing a story of Central country, we end up in a dilemma of two extremes: either 0 or 100, peaceful everyday life story or earth shattering scenario. It’s really hard to strike a balance for that, isn’t it? We have come to yearn for Eastern and Western countries, who cause troubles in a moderate amount.
Q2: None of the Northern wizards listen to Snow and White, who act as teachers. Their relationship is such that they will start trying to kill each other immediately because of anything and everything. What do you pay attention to when you write them as a team?
A: Because the Northern wizards have a villainous aspect, we want to ensure that the players will feel a measure of unease around them. They are wizards who possess a strength that is unbounded by any rules, self-willed, and destructive. Their actions appear cool, reassuring, and refreshing when they’re on your side. However, the same strength may turn against you at any time. That’s the way all power, no matter if it’s of violent or social type, works in this world. With such a mentality, they are always on edge among each other as well as when they are with the Sage. That’s the kind of relationship we have in mind for them. When they cooperate with each other, it’s usually out of common interest, in a ‘enemy of my enemy is my friend’ way. What happens afterwards depends on their mood of the day because of their fickleness. Northern Country is the opposite of Central Country in that a simple fork falling down may start a fight between them, so we need to be careful that such tendency won’t shadow the main theme of the story.
Q3: Among the Northern wizards, Bradley has a sharp mind and usually takes care of others. On the other hand, we get the strong impression from what Nero said about the time he was a member of the bandit gang in ‘Etude of the Melancholy Sunflower’ that his past with Bradley has a dark and heavy side. What is important to you when you write Bradley’s smarts and mentality that he must challenge those who are powerful, and someone like Nero getting involved with him?
A: When we write the pride of Northern wizards, their image is that of powerful wild beasts, and we think of Bradley as the boss of a pack of such beasts. Besides the determination to defeat the opponent as a show of strength, he protects his pack from outside threats and grants them benefits. He isn’t so all-loving as to take in everyone who is weak. Rather, there’s the feeling that he’s a stern judge of lives. He’s accustomed to living with a pack like that, and we write him as a character that the Sage, who was initiating a communal life, would find relatively easy to talk to. We can’t really talk much about his relationship with Nero, but we would like to give a glimpse into their lingering attachment, irritation, loneliness, admiration, happiness, resentment, blames for themselves and others etc. among the various uncomfortable relationships at the Magic Manor.
Q4: In Chapter 14 of the main story, the Eastern wizards worked together when they investigated the graveyard. They seemed like a good team with a nice balance between Faust and Nero as the guardians and Shino and Heathcliff as the students. We also have the impression that compared to other countries, dangers often accompany the Eastern wizards in their missions. What is important to you when you write their stories?
A: We want to give Eastern Country an overall gothic atmosphere in battles as well as in investigation of mysteries. The Eastern wizards have the same team composition of two senior wizards and two young ones like the Southern Country. However, if South has a family-like type of trust, then East has the kind of wordless trust between fighters who let each other watch their backs during a battle. Compared to the feeling as if a burden is off your shoulder of North or the resplendence of West, there’s often an aching aftertaste of loneliness to East when the case is closed, which is probably how the Eastern essence is expressed. In the stories, Shino often gets badly injured. That isn’t something we intended, rather a consequence of the plot. It’s kind of sad if the Eastern wizards have to appear in gloomy stories all the time, so maybe we should let another country deal with that for an event from time to time. Something like, the Eastern wizards encounter a cute mysterious being, while the Southern wizards are soaked in blood.
Q5: Since we are discussing the creation of the story, it’s essential to talk about the Curious Affliction left behind by the Great Calamity. In particular, the incident in Chapter 20 when they fought the zombies left a strong impression on us. Because of his fear, Heathcliff transformed into a black panther and attacked Shino and Cain, then Owen appeared to help Heathcliff when he was in such a state. How do you capture such a relationship between Heathcliff, whose Curious Affliction had just arisen, Shino, and Owen?
A: The Curious Afflictions have various meta purposes, and one of those is to create drama in the story. From this perspective, there are many cases of characters who become what they dislike the most, and Heathcliff is a prominent examples, isn’t he? As he is still unaware of his internal complex about being a wizard, he transforms into a beast and becomes a risk to other people, and Shino decides to hide this fact from him. We think that Heathcliff’s learning about his Affliction and Shino’s action are an interesting point in how their relationship will develop. On his part, Owen’s situation, where he has a weak point that he doesn’t really understand and doesn’t want anyone to know, has some similarity to Heathcliff’s. Owen can seal Shino and Heathcliff’s lips, but the two of them know his secret and accordingly have a certain power against him. This way, we can make the drama related to the Afflictions even more complex.
Q6: The Western Wizards all have their own aesthetics while respecting those of others. To us, they seem to make a remarkably stable team. They enjoy terrors and troubles, and they take unexpected events in stride. Thus, the unknown and the bizarre lend them courage. Please tell us about what points you keep in mind when you write the Western wizards as a team?
A: Because Western wizards are Western wizards, their aesthetics are important to them. As a result, no matter how much we want to progress with our story, the moment we force them to do something that contradicts their aesthetics, they’ll stop being themselves. Consequently, we have to let them finish what they want to do. When we think “looks like it’s time we should wrap up this case”, we’ll proceed with the “take your time to get here” approach. The Western wizards are all eccentric, but they are honest to their own hearts. They don’t do things like distort their nature or delude themselves, so when things go their usual courses, the Western wizards won’t feel restricted and chafed. Then we think ‘this is how they will be annoyed’ and proceed accordingly. That’s probably a rather irresponsible approach to writing, however, we feel that we can showcase the charm and sense of wonder in the story better when we let the wizards off the wagon and freely watch the world according to their aesthetics, obsessions, and whims, instead of making them travel linearly on a single track from the beginning to the end. In this fashion, the Western wizards are the polar opposite of the Eastern wizards, as in, when the wizards throw way their personal hang-ups and fight as members of a unit, that’s when the Eastern charm shines.
Q7: The Southern wizards are peaceful and good at communication, who have spent time in close contact with other people and can live together with them. On the other hand, they also have explosive factors such as the prophecy that Mitile will cause the destruction of all Southern wizards, or the fact that Figaro hides from Rutile and Mitile that he comes from the North. Could you explain to us your thinking process about the balance of such a group of characters?
A: By properly portraying how wonderful the down-to-earth, family-like Southern wizards are, we showcase what is beautiful about the world of “Mahoutsukai no Yakusoku”. The flashiness of the Northern wizards or the heroism of the Central wizards tend to draw a lot of attention, so we add thrilling elements such as Mitile’s prophecy or Figaro’s origin. Even so, with Rutile’s kindness, joy, and dauntlessness as well as Lennox’s generosity and patience, we do our best to portray how they are a lifeline to people around them in everyday life, even though they lead quiet, unassuming lives. Through that, the audience will hopefully be endeared to the Southern Country’s people and find them wonderful. And when the readers are immersed in this down-to-earth, warm, and gentle world, and are in love with this country, elements like Mitile’s prophecy or Figaro’s origin will become even more effective.
Q8: On the topic of Figaro, he has the side of a Northern wizard that he has been hiding from Rutile and Mitile and the side of the Southern wizard that he currently is. How do you capture and convey that quality of his? Please share with us what is important to you when you write Figaro.
A: At his core, Figaro is a compassionate person. However, he also knows that kindness is impotent. Because he possesses immense power, terrors and threats are his tools of choice when he wants something to go his way, because achieving his goals quickly and effectively is worth the price to pay to him. In his view, being kind to people won’t get him good results. He wants to treat the people who respect and admire him the right way in a consistent manner, but that takes time and effort. So there’s the impression that he makes the effort while being conscious that he is doing that deliberately. When we portray his two-faced-ness, we don’t go to the extremes. Instead, we take care to maintain the balance, in which he’s kind but prone to giving barbed comments, or brutally blunt but caring for the people he’s dealing with.
Q9: Masaki Akira is the protagonist, who is entangled with the wizards as the Sage. What do you pay attention to when you write them?
A: Their characterization is that they respect the wills of the wizards. The exception is when they want to do something in a particular way, but they don’t excuse themselves with “I thought this was how I should do it”. Instead they insist on asking the wizards about what the latter want to do. They pour their heart into playing the role of a confidante and mediator. If Akira fulfills this role too perfectly, the players won’t be able to put themselves into their shoes. Accordingly, we write Akira as someone who sincerely expresses their fear of scary things, their doubts, and their emotions, and someone who has the flexibility to apologize without rancor and fix things when they make a mistake. For the story as a whole, we’d like to write a figure who experiences diversity and accepts it, so perhaps in some parts Akira will come across as an abstract symbol. It’d be nice if we manage to convey to the readers the vibe of the Sage gently asking the wizards about how the latter feel because the Sage think of the wizards as cat-like beings, who take things in stride but aren't good at listening to what you say.
Q10: In the story, there are times we can see what a precarious place the young wizards are in, such as Riquet’s insistence that what the Chief of the Church taught him was the absolute truth, or Arthur’s unquestioning trust in Oz’ kindness, which leads him to erase the disasters and wars caused by Oz from history. What do you pay attention to when you write about these potential dangers from and for the young wizards?
A: “Mahoyaku” is not only a story about adults giving guidance to children who are in a concerning situation, because there are times the opposite happens when children guide the adults out of problems too.
With that as the premise, we think the concerning situation the characters you named are in comes from the belief that the justice and faith they hold are ‘correct’ while they still lack knowledge and experience. In the eyes of the young children, the shining justice and faith they feel are flawless, aren’t they? However, the longer you hold such justice and faith, even if the luster remains the same, the dirt will gather and overshadow it, as you notice that the other side of those values is unexpectedly tattered and grim. Disappointment is inevitable in that situation, but that’s also when you can look at what you have been holding on with a cool head. Thus you’ll have an objective view of what shape your faith has taken and the beauty as well as twistedness of your justice. That way, as you get older and your experience grows, you’ll be able to make the choice whether to give up your faith and justice and do something else or continue to keep them.
It isn’t necessarily a purely bad thing to know only one part of yourself due to lack of experience, and it is an occasion for learning in itself to find something shiny and wholeheartedly believe in it. To you, this shiny thing can be your guidance, or something you treasure the most or love the most, and through that you’ll grow to have confidence in yourself and enrich your heart. On the other hand, it's probably rather old-fashioned of me to view that as risky. Because we’re currently living in an information society, we don’t have the sheltered life of a frog in a well. In that state, we understand that someone's 'justice' is correct while being unable to agree with their opinion. As a result, even if we don’t intend to hurt that person, we end up doing that simply by stating what we think. Because that’s the environment we’re living in, we suppose many people would share such a view with the long-lived wizards. So, we would like to capture the different aspects of the views held by both the young wizards and the long-lived wizards.
Q11: On the cover of this issue are Riquet, Nero, and Bradley. Please share with us what has changed about them and what stays the same in the many stories they have appeared in compared to the initial characterization in your memory.
A: Riquet: In the original setting, Lennox was to take care of Riquet in addition to his former lord, because he was concerned about Riquet’s situation with the Church. As you can see, while Lennox is caring for other children, Nero has usurped his position. We feel that early on, Riquet had an even narrower mindset and worldview due to his fanaticism. The current Riquet has become much cuter, so we like him more.
Nero: His first setting is an Eastern wizard who keeps to himself because he is tired of dealing with people. He isn’t the kind of cold person who thinks he doesn’t need other people. Rather, he has an inner conflict where he’s tired of dealing with people but he can’t wholeheartedly hate them either. At first, he was someone who got tired of people because of his career in hospitality. Then his characterization becomes such that he is a former bandit. As a result, there’s a certain vitality in his weariness. It’s because he was passionate in the past that in the present he’s a shell of ash after the flame has burnt out.
Bradley: When we were coming up with a bad wizard to put in the company of Oz, Mithra, and Owen, there was the opinion that there should be a character who was a prisoner and mafia boss-like. That’s how Bradley came into being, who was once the boss of a bandit gang and is a prisoner in the present. We think that thanks to the presence of a wizard who is a prisoner, the worldbuilding became more complex, as this is the world where powerful wizards can be put in jail.
Q12: As you said, Nero usurped Lennox’s position. We feel that to Riquet, the food Nero makes is like a dream, and it’s thanks to Nero that he learns the kind of joy he can get from his own food. What are your thoughts on the nature of their relationship, who are neither brothers nor parent and child?
A: We think that they have the kind of relationship where they help each other despite the gap in age, as each of them brings in his unique skillset. In particular, Nero is the kind of person who can revitalize other people when he puts his skill in use. He doesn’t love himself, but he derives his self-confidence and pride from making food. In such a situation, someone appeared, who had never eaten real food and was moved by Nero’s food so much as to proclaim that he tasted paradise. For Nero, that’s a scene where he was given a reason to love himself. On the other side, though he isn’t fully aware of it, Riquet is good at setting boundaries and guiding people. Therefore, when Nero decides to kickstart his life again, even if he’s at a loss, Riquet will have faith in his nature and guide him. We think that they are both people who threw away the place that shaped them, and they share with each other the hope for rebirth into their new selves. They’re the duo that have our personal favorite theme.
Q13: The event “Paradox Droid” was held for April's Fools. The new worldbuilding and story of AssistDroids and humans living together were an instant favorite among the Sages. As the two of you created the worldbuilding of “Paradox Droid” together, could you please share with us your memory of the creative process?
A: Not just for April’s Fools but with events in general, we form the story with the three protagonists in the SSRs as the pillars. In the previous April’s Fools with the high school AU, Arthur is the representative of the academic-inclined school, Mithra represents the delinquent school, and Rutile stands for the art school. Similarly, this time we create the story with Owen representing the lab, Cain representing the police, and Rustica representing the downtown.
Because April’s Fools is a party, we created an elaborate setting so that players who like the characters that don’t appear in the card selection can join in the enjoyment of the AU world too. We think our art director had the hardest job, which was to create pictures of the characters who live in an unexplored world that no one has seen before. It was really nice to be able to use the word ‘promise’ without having to think much about it.
Card story: The Ritual of Starlight and Blessings - Blessings for Riquet
Chapter 1:
Riquet: Oh no, it is impossible to see the stars again today. It is my birthday soon, but the rain just won't stop. I can’t help but feel anxious about the weather when the day comes.
As Riquet stood by the window and looked up at the pouring rain, his face was as cloudy as the sky.
Akira: I’d like to celebrate your special day under a beautiful sky full of stars too, Riquet.
Akira: (Besides, there’s also the Ritual of Starlight and Blessings)
The Ritual of Starlight and Blessing was a mystical ritual concerning the relationship between the Sage and the Sage’s wizards, according to what Snow and White uncovered from the old records. Apparently when the wizard in question conducted this ritual together with the Sage on the wizard’s birthday or a similar day when it was easy to gather blessings for them, the bond between them would deepen.
Riquet: I feel the same, Master Sage. When I think about me performing a holy ceremony with you under the starry sky, my heart beats faster with happiness and excitement!
Riquet: I wonder if I will be able to perform the ritual correctly though. What if I get too nervous and ruin it? I am really worried about that.
Akira: I believe you’ll be fine, Riquet. Besides that, it’s said that the ritual will improve your magical power, clear your head, and provide many other benefits. Apparently the ritual brings you nothing but good stuffs, so let’s put our worries aside and look forward to the big day!
Riquet: Master Sage… I will!
Riquet: May I have the fortune of performing the ritual flawlessly under the beautiful stars on my birthday.
Chapter 2:
We needed many things to conduct the Ritual of Starlight and Blessings. First of all was the special outfit that Snow and White had prepared for us. Next came the blessings from three people with some connections to the wizard in question and the Sage.
Mitile: I asked Brother to join us too, but he had to decline. He really wanted to come but there was an urgent business he had to attend to.
Arthur: To make up for this, he was determined to prepare a present for Riquet to celebrate his birthday properly later. That’s what I happened to witness.
Akira: Riquet will certainly be delighted. In any case, we still need one more person for the blessings. Whom should we ask now?
Mithra: Do you three happen to know where Riquet is?
Akira: Mithra? It’s kinda unexpected to see you looking for Riquet. He’s going shopping with Snow and the others today.
Mithra: Is that so? How troublesome. Just as I’m feeling hungry. I would like to ask him to make me something to eat.
Arthur: Why would you ask Riquet to make food for you?
Mithra: It’s him who fervently wants me to ask him to cook though.
Arthur – Mitile – Akira: Riquet? Fervently wishes for that?
Akira: Oh, can it be that you’re talking about our mission the other day?
[Flashback]
Riquet: Once again, your space-time door has proved its merits, Mithra. However, eating charcoal all the time is bad for your stomach. I will pray to God for you to taste food that is far more delicious than that.
[End flashback]
Mithra: Well, that’s what I think he meant with what he said anyway.
Arthur: Acknowledging people’s hard work is indeed a charm of Riquet’s.
Mitile: That’s unexpected. I didn’t know you and Riquet had a conversation like that, Mister Mithra.
Mithra: It is nothing so unusual though. You simply didn’t know about that.
Mitile: B-but I do know a lot of nice things about Riquet that you don’t!
Arthur: That’s right! Why don’t you join us, Mithra? Together we can find the way to express everything that is nice about Riquet.
Mitile – Akira: Eh?
Arthur: Both Mitile and I take pride in the fact that we know many good points of Riquet. On the other hand, Mithra has spent time with a Riquet that we haven’t seen. With the help of Master Sage, the three of us will be able to find the words of blessings for Riquet that only we can come up with, don’t you think so?
Mitile: Whoa, that’s a splendid idea! Riquet will definitely love that!
Akira: Please give us a hand, Mithra. In return, I’ll make you anything you want for a snack later.
Mithra: Anything?
Akira: I- I think so.
Mithra: Well, fine by me.
Arthur – Mitile: Yay!
Mitile: I have to make this clear though, Mister Mithra. Allow me to say this much: I am the one who has seen the most of Riquet’s good side!
Mithra: What? I don’t really get what you’re talking about, but no way I can lose to anyone about anything.
Akira: (Why on earth are they turning this into a competition?! Anyway, it seems that we will have wonderful blessings for Riquet. I can’t wait for the ritual.)
Chapter 3:
On Riquet’s birthday, the scent of rain still lingered.
The ritual would be more effective if it was performed in the country the wizard in question belonged to, at a place they had a connection where the stars could be seen clearly.
The location Riquet chose was the courtyard of the Magic Manor.
Riquet: This is a very important place to me. The middle of the yard in particular is full of memories. That is where I learn to read and write with Rutile and Mitile or take a stroll with you, Master Sage.
Akira: The clouds are still heavy, but I’m glad the rain has stopped.
Riquet: Certainly! We can still see the stars through the clouds. My heart is full of gratitude for everyone who has helped me, from the outfit Lord Snow and Lord White prepared for me to my hair that Chloe styled. I’m ready for the ritual.
Akira: Let’s start then. Please close your eyes, Riquet.
Riquet closed his eyes and clasped his hands in front of his chest. My eyes too were shut. I filled my heart with the precious words everyone entrusted to me and carefully let them rise to my lips.
Akira: First will be the blessing from Arthur. ‘You often keep your eyes closed during your meal. That must be the proof that you cherish the food you taste very much. You take everything you do seriously and try your best. I love that a lot!’
Akira: Next one is Mithra’s. ‘It’s difficult to make the charcoal that satisfies me. More importantly, please keep an eye on Mitile. You two seem to be attached at the hips, after all.’
Akira: And now, the blessing from Mitile. ‘I really love your happy smile and cheerful voice when you chat with me. You will always be my number one friend, Riquet.’
Akira: And now, my blessing. I find the way you wholeheartedly believe in your mission very cool. Let’s continue to tackle our worries, savor our joys, and learn new things together!
After I managed to convey all of the blessings without any mistake, I felt something warm swell from my heart. It went through my hand into Riquet’s chest.
Akira: How are you feeling, Riquet? Oh, Riquet?!
Riquet: …..
As soon as I opened my eyes, what I saw was big tear drops filling Riquet’s green eyes.
Riquet: Master Sage, what should I do when the word ‘happy’ seems to be not enough?
Riquet’s smile that bloomed for an instant was full of happiness. As if being confounded by the overflowing feelings that he couldn’t hold in his hands, he frowned.
Akira: It’s alright, because your feelings have reached me, Riquet.
In that moment, a strong wind blew and carried the clouds with it. The moonlight dimmed a little, as Riquet pointed to the sky.
Riquet: Master Sage, look!
I stared at the clouds that covered the rim of the moon. The part that was lit up by the moonlight was dyed faintly in the colours of rainbow.
Akira: Wow, amazing!
Riquet: Is this the result of the ritual? It’s so beautiful.
Riquet: Master Sage, please learn everything about the world with me as soon as possible!
Akira: Sure!
Full of joy, Riquet and I looked at each other. In the middle of the courtyard that was full of memories for Riquet, we stood side by side as we took our fill of the night sky in this mysterious world.
Card episode: Once Again, a New Treasure
Akira: Riquet, I heard that you celebrated your birthday with the three wizards who gave you blessings. What did you receive from them?
Riquet: His Highness gifted me with a huge suitcase full of books. He said, ‘You always keep everything carefully, right? You can bring these books to anywhere you like to read without worrying about getting them dirty.”
Akira: As expected of Arthur. He chose a present that really suits you. How about Mithra, what did he give you?
Riquet: He didn’t give me anything. Instead he took me to the Northern Country out of the blue.
Akira: Eh, was that to celebrate your birthday?
Riquet: Yes, it seems that Mithra wanted to give me some training. I was excited, but Oz quickly got to us and put a stop to that, so I had to be content with just Mithra’s well intention.
Akira: The Northern country is a really harsh place, you know. Even so, it’s just like Mithra to come up with such a birthday celebration though.
Akira: And the third person who gave you blessing was Mitile. I saw him try very hard to choose a present for you. How did you two celebrate your birthday?
Riquet: Ehehe, he told me ‘This is a secret between only the two of us’, so I can’t tell you, Master Sage. My apologies.
Akira: Understood. I think I know what his celebration of your birthday was like just from looking at you though.
Riquet: Really? You’re amazing, Master Sage!
Akira: It must have been a wonderful present that delighted you like nothing else would. Something that you want to keep like a treasure.
Riquet: Correct!
Part 9.1 Even after I turn to stone
The silver cloud covered the sun and cast a shadow on the face of Owen, who was smiling coldly in front of me. Behind him, the plants in the flowerbed and the branches of the great trees rustled like a beast that was raising its hackles.
The flower petals danced round and round in the wind, as Owen purred with a syrupy voice.
Owen: Come now, make your choice, Mister Knight. Will you keep silent for my sake? Or will you reveal my weakness to everyone to protect your teammates? No reason to hesitate, right? You must have made up your mind already. Enough with your ‘good guy’ act. Come out and admit you don’t care to help someone you hate. No one will judge you, Mister Knight, because everyone would do the same thing. See, Mister Knight?
Owen leaned forward as he whispered, his breath tickling my ear. Owen’s eyes, which had the same colors as mine like the image from a mirror, crooked in self-satisfaction.
‘No reason to hesitate,’ he said, and I would agree with him. I should protect my comrades’ lives. Even so…
Cain: I won’t make any choice.
Owen: ….What did you say?
Cain: I don’t want to tell everyone about your Affliction without your explicit permission.
Owen: Why?
Cain: Doing so would make you happy, it looks like.
Owen’s eyebrows drew together in obvious irritation. His gaze was like the point of a sword.
Wondering if there had been a misunderstanding somewhere, I elaborated on what I had said.
Cain: Don’t take it the wrong way. I’m not saying that I want to spend my whole life refusing to do things that would make you happy. What I’m thinking is that you’d love it if I decide you’re expendable, and that isn’t what I want you to be happy about.
Owen: I know that. I can’t stand what you’re saying precisely because I know that. What’s this yammer about my permission? You think a weakling like you can change my mind and get me to do whatever you say?
Cain: I can, if I talk to you with sincerity from my heart.
Owen: Such useless drivel. Your sincere heart isn’t even fit for feeding my dog.
Floating like a feather in the air, Owen looked down at me. The tips of his shoes were on the same level as my nose.
Owen: So what you’re saying is, o Mister Knight, you’re willing to sacrifice your precious teammates in order to be true to your honor? Odds are the Afflicted me will turn Riquet into dog food when you’re still persuading me, you know.
A bitter feeling rose in me as I heard those words. As my hesitation continued, the urge to tear at myself became deafening. However, I would definitely feel the same if I betrayed Owen and made his weakness public.
That was precisely the problem. I would be a failure no matter what I chose and end up with regret and hatred of myself. Perhaps this was what the malicious Owen was aiming at. No way I should let this situation drag on. I instinctively grabbed Owen’s ankle.
Cain: Hey, Owen…
Owen: Hah, what do you think you’re doing?
Cain: I’m doing what?
Owen: Holding my ankle. Do you want me to kill you?
Cain: You always disappear in the middle of talking. We’re not done yet.
Owen: It’s useless holding my ankle. I’ll disappear anyway. I can go anywhere, while you’re just a worm in the ground.
Cain: Got it, got it! I’ll let go, so please don’t disappear on me!
‘He’s so annoying.’ That was what I thought as I held both of my hands up and asked Owen.
Cain: About what you said earlier, that you know I don’t want to make you happy by betraying you.
Owen: What are you getting at?
Cain: Why would you be happy if I made that choice?
Owen’s lips curled up. He cheerily wagged his finger as he looked down at me.
Owen: Because you would know what a terrible person you really are, Mister Knight, and you would despair at this world accordingly. You would rend your garment and gnash your teeth, as you fume and resent the world that does not let you do your champion of justice act. I want to see you like that, Mister Knight. It’d be even lovelier if I had an artist commit such an image of you to canvas and hanged that painting in a cathedral. It would get more curious visitors to come than icons of heroes.
Cain: (He sure has terrible taste)
Owen: What do you think? That would be delightful, wouldn’t it? Even after you turn into stone, your name would live on under the ‘coward’ entry of a dictionary.
Owen snickered. He really reveled in acting creepy, ill-tempered, misanthropic, cruel. Had he been under my command, I would certainly tell him ‘Your mind is sure full of nasty ideas.’
Part 2: If I did this from the beginning
‘Hey, I don’t know what happened but let’s go for a drink! Let’s sing and dance! Stop dwelling on those dark thoughts!”
That was no way to deal with a Northern wizard. I tried such an approach with him many times before and got nothing but failure. Thinking a little, I decided to change tack.
Cain: You’re a Northern wizard. To you guys, nothing is more important than never losing to anyone.
Owen: Of course.
Cain: In that case, why would you be fine with me telling everyone your weak point? Is making me a coward such a big deal to you, such that it overcomes your distaste for defeat? That isn’t very Northern wizard-like, is it?
Owen: …..
Owen had no reply. He stared fixedly at me with a deep frown. His eyes were full of the kind of hatred and loathing a hurt young man would have for an enemy who burned down his village.
Owen: I hate you.
Cain: I don’t know why you would hate me. I have a different idea about what I would hate. Anyway, it is what it is. Let’s try to understand each other!
Owen: When I’m in the mood, I’ll…
Cain: Yeah yeah, you can kill me anytime you want. I’ve heard that so many times already. Anyway, let’s talk about something else for a change.
Owen: You…
Cain: You must have had enough of that, right? I’m the same. ‘Do you want me to kill you?’ ‘No I don’t’. We’ve had that talk countless times, so we know all too well where the other side stands on this topic. Time to put it aside, I think. Or wind it down to only once a day. That way, we can make use of what little time we have and progress with our conversation, right?
Cain: Get down here. Come on.
As I tried to persuade Owen with my body language too, at the end I pressed on the tip of his shoe a little. That was quite an all or nothing gamble, but Owen stared at me blankly and finally went back down. He summoned his magic focus and sat on it. With veins popping on his forehead, he crossed his legs and rested his chin on his hands.
Owen: This doesn’t mean I’ll do what you say. Is that clear?
Cain: Yeah, I know.
Owen: What do you mean by ‘progress with our conversation’?
Owen glanced at me. Though he was giving off the attitude of boredom, I could sense a tinge of curiosity from him. Was he interested in what I wanted to say even though he didn’t have the child-like personality at the moment? With that unexpected realization, I continued our talk.
Cain: To tell the truth, Owen, I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to see Riquet or Mitile get into a fight with the little you and end up getting eaten by Cerberus. However, I don’t want you to run into trouble with Mithra and Bradley because your weak point is revealed either. I’m in a bind and feeling like my mind is all jumbled up. So I’d like to search for a solution with you.
Owen: Why?
Cain: Eh?
Owen: Why would you think so? Don’t you hate me? You will kill me and take back your eye in the end, won’t you? You’d have a good shot at that if I got weakened, right?
Cain: That’s something different altogether. I want to get my eye back with my own strength. Taking the path you said is just dirty robbery.
Owen: Huh?
Cain: Uhm this is hard. How should I put it? You’re dangerous and a complete terror, but to me, that’s no reason to think that it’s OK to hurt you. That kind of thought would be no different from the rule forbidding wizards to join the Knights, you know?
Fixing his gaze on me, Owen listened to what I said attentively. I was startled to see him like that. So earlier I was the one who behaved rudely to Owen first. Being too worried for Riquet, I ended up talking carelessly about telling everyone his Curious Affliction. With such a course of action, only Owen would get hurt. No wonder he was irritated. If only I had met his eyes and talked to him like this right from the beginning…
Perhaps Owen would have listened to what I wanted to say without acting out.
The soft wind ruffled Owen’s bangs. After a long silence, he spoke up.
Owen: Tell me, why did the me that I have no memory of try to kill you?
Cain: Eh?
Owen: Shino has told me that he gave me eyedrops. I would never let anyone do that to me. Therefore, the me that I have no memory of must be pretty well-behaved. And yet, he tried to kill you. Why?
Cain: …That’s…
Part 3: Unravelling a spell
Owen: Answer me.
Cain: I made the little you angry. I was planning to leave him by himself, so he told me to die.
Owen: ….
Owen: You call the me that I have no memory of ‘the little Owen’, right?
Cain: That’s because you act like a child in times like that.
Owen: You would leave a little child by himself? Even though you were the Captain of the Knights?
Cain: That’s…
Owen’s face was all scrunched up as he aimed his contempt at me with all his might. Suddenly I was strangely anxious to explain myself. Even if Owen put on a mocking smile and put me down on the regular, I could never expect that he got palpably upset when he was disappointed for real.
Cain: Please hear me out. I’ve always thought of you as the Northern wizard Owen.
Owen: People do that, indeed.
Cain: Even though you act and talk like a child, I’m aware that you possess considerable power. That’s why I thought you’d be fine when you were by yourself. Now though, the way I think has changed. I won’t leave you by yourself and go anywhere.
Owen’s eyes widened. He smiled wryly as if to let out a sigh. The expression he was making was incredibly beautiful. Before I knew it, I couldn’t take my eyes off him as my breath was taken away. His face was like that of a dear friend.
Owen: I see. Is that why you told me you wouldn’t let me be left behind? In that case, why don’t you tell Mitile, Riquet, or Chloe something like ‘Don’t leave Owen alone when he acts like a child’? This way, the likes of Mithra will be none the wiser. Are you listening to me, Mister Knight?
Cain: Eh? Uhm, what were you saying again?
Owen: You little…
Cain: Sorry, sorry, I didn’t mean to ignore you.
Owen shrugged. He gracefully crossed his legs on the top of this suitcase.
Owen: Mister Knight, Mister Knight, it’d be best you hurry up and grow stronger, then go and protect the little guys from the likes of the child me.
Cain: I’m well aware I need to do that. That’s why I try to improve by training every day. But…
Owen picked at his own bang in apparent boredom as his legs swinged to and fro.
Owen: Your spell is the problem.
Cain: My spell? You mean the spell I say when I cast magic?
Owen: That one. It isn’t bad per se, but its words are too grand.
The words of my spell were too grand?
Owen: Because of that, you can’t wield your spell properly yet. Ah well, it does sound just like what a Mister Knight would have though, so don’t mind it.
Cain: H- hold on, Owen. Explain that clearer to me, please.
I hastily asked him for help, because I could tell this could be the spur for my growth. Owen’s mouth made a dissatisfied moue. He seemed to regret bringing up the topic, because he abruptly looked away.
Owen: No. Go ask Oz instead.
Cain: Yeah, I’ll do that too, but sometimes I don’t really get what Oz is trying to say. He himself makes this face like he doesn’t know what to do when I can’t understand him. Perhaps Arthur and Oz understand each other so well because they have known each other for a long time. Occasionally Riquet and I are left behind as they go off to who knows where.
Owen: We don’t understand you lot either. His Highness on the other hand gets us better, probably because our temperaments are similar.
Cain: Your temperaments?
Owen suddenly turned to me and said.
Owen: Just like how you don’t understand Oz, sometimes I don’t understand the words coming out of your mouth either, Mister Knight. So I get why Oz would make that face. If you don’t phrase what you want to say well, you won’t be understood and can’t create the effect you wish in other people. It’s the same with the spirits.
Cain: The spirits?
Owen: What do you think the spell you cast is for? It’s to move the spirits with your words, of course.
The leaves rustled in the faint wind, as I looked around me. The limpid dews that lined the big leaves. The soft scent of the earth with a note of water in it. The sunlight that poured over the trees and shone through the great trunk. I could feel the spirits watching me and unconsciously took a deep breath.
Owen: The words of your spell are too strong for your magical power and age. In any case, it sounds like the spell of a Mister Knight so it’s still pretty nice.
Cain: What happens when the words of my spell are strong?
Owen: The same as when you say it to people. You’ll get laughed at.
Cain: L- laughed at? The spirits have been laughing at me all this time?
Owen: That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. You can think of it like a fond smile?
Cain: Wait a sec, I don’t get it yet. I’ve been trying my best to look good to everyone.
Owen: I’m not saying that’s a bad look though.
Cain: But spirits have been laughing at me?
Owen: When a baby chews on their pacifier and babbles that the world belongs to them, no way you’ll take that seriously, right?
Part 4: To become a worthy wizard
Cain: That’s true…
Owen: It’s the same with your spell. You’re a funny baby. The spirits like you but they don’t take you seriously.
Cain: Uuhm.
Owen: Take Figaro as an example. When he says he’ll seize them and subject them to his rule, the spirits gulp and straighten their backs. Thus, they do as he bids without a question. That’s what the words of a spell should be like.
Cain: So that’s how it is.
I had a slight shock. It was the witch sisters from Central Country who taught me about magical spells. They told me to choose the words that I liked or those that I felt would spark my power, so I did accordingly. I was really fond of the spell I picked because it was dashing.
Seeing that I was upset, Owen frowned as if feeling troubled.
Owen: What’s with you? I explained about your spell just as you asked.
Cain: You really did. Thank you, Owen.
Owen: What’s with the gloomy act? Why are you talking like an old horse about to breathe his last?
Cain: You know, I thought my spell was cool and I was having a decent presentation of myself. Say, should I pick a new spell?
Owen: That would indeed help you improve faster. It isn’t a bad idea to stay with your current one though. Give it a try and grow to be worthy of your spell.
Cain: To be worthy of my spell?
Owen: Be a wizard that is the King of Knights instead of a baby, for one.
A wizard that was the King of Knights. Just as I was feeling depressed, those words set my heart ablaze.
Owen: Ah well, that may be too much for you though, Mister Knight.
Cain: No, it’s not. I will train diligently and become a wizard that is a good match for my spell. Just you wait.
Owen: Oh, or so you think. Show me what you have then. You’ll have trouble generating power until you manage what you claim though.
Owen’s lips curled up in a sarcastic smile. It seemed like he was making fun of me, but I had the feeling that he was trying to give me encouragement too. I felt strangely refreshed.
Cain: Thank you so much. I really mean it. With your advice, I think I’ll be of help to Master Sage and everyone even if we run into the wizard Nova.
Owen: …Nova?
Cain: Yeah. I don’t know if we can even find him, but we’re going to search for clues about him.
Owen: Mister Knight, you’re no match for him. He’ll turn you into stone.
My face went blank. Owen didn’t mince his words at all. I was once again made aware of how dangerous Nova must be if that was what Owen, who had had a run-in with him, had to say.
Cain: I’ll have to be very careful, I know. I’ll protect Master Sage and His Highness Prince Arthur.
Owen: Are you a fool?
Cain: Don’t worry. Oz and Shylock will be with us too.
Owen: ….
Owen seemed to be about to say something, but he only clicked his tongue annoyedly. On that note, he turned away and disappeared.
[In Cain’s room]
The next morning, on the day we left for Western Country, I sensed someone’s presence.
Arthur: Oh, looks like I woke you up.
The person in front of me was Arthur. He was glancing at me while touching my left wrist. His silver hair fluttered as he smiled mischievously. Seeing that expression of his, I remembered.
This was an experiment we had done countless times to see whether I could see the person who touched me while I was sleeping when I woke up. If I could see someone after touching them while being unconscious, how the Affliction from the Calamity worked would be obvious. On the other hand, in case I couldn’t see such a person, my vision of people would depend on my consciousness. If I was touched but wasn’t aware of that and ended up not seeing the person, maybe we could come up with some kind of plan.
For this purpose, Arthur had touched me when I was sleeping many, many times. However, I would wake up the moment he came into contact with me. That was because of my soldiering habits. If it hadn’t been Arthur, I would have woken up the moment my door moved.
Arthur: Sorry, I failed again.
Cain: Don’t worry about that. Good morning, Arthur.
The bed creaked as I stirred. I smiled when I looked up at Arthur, which he returned.
Arthur: You seem happy although our experiment failed.
Cain: It feels great to see someone when I wake up, and it’s even better when that person is you, Arthur.
Part 5: Please don’t go anywhere
Arthur: You certainly have it rough, Cain. This makes me want to come wake you up every morning.
Cain: Normally, it’s me who wakes up earlier than you and goes to wake you up. Looks like I overslept today.
Arthur: Maybe it’s because there’s no sun. There was a drizzle just now. Shall I carry your luggage to our rendezvous spot for you while you get ready?
Cain: There’s no need. I’ll get there right away after I change my clothes.
Arthur: Got it.
Arthur opened the window with magic and soundlessly got out of my room from there. On his broom, he flew into the sky. That must have been where he had entered my room from, trying to be as quiet as possible so as to not wake me up.
Cain: Haha.
I laughed to myself. It was just like Arthur to leave with the same route he had used for getting in.
[By the elevator]
When I arrived at the elevator, I only saw Arthur there. However, I could hear the voices of Riquet and Oz.
Riquet: Since we’re travelling to Western Country, I’d like to search for the treat Chloe recommended to me. Apparently it’s a confection that is like a kiss from an aristocrat. Are you listening to me, Oz?
Oz: I am.
Riquet: In that case, there’ll be markets that sell this confection and I definitely, certainly would like to…
Riquet: Oh, you’re here, Cain.
Cain: Hi, Riquet.
There was the sound of little feet running towards me, then my right hand was squeezed tightly. Right away, I could see Riquet, who was looking up at me. His hand never leaving mine, he pulled me in the direction of Oz’ voice.
Riquet: Cain, have you ever tried the confection that is like a kiss from an aristocrat? Do you know where it is available?
Cain: Since we are travelling to the Capital of Western Country, you’ll see it soon. It can be found everywhere there.
Something slightly brushed my fingertips when I was talking with Riquet. It was Oz’ fingers. He was there as I looked up.
Cain: Good morning, Oz.
Oz: ……
Oz wordlessly nodded. He was Arthur’s foster parent and the most powerful wizard in the world. It was incredibly reassuring to be in the same team with a wizard of his caliber. However, it could be unsettling to be around him too. One could see that he was a taciturn person who took things as they came, but once he bared his blade, he was utterly ruthless. Therefore, when the most powerful wizard that was him went overboard with something, no one would be able to stop him.
Cain: (And yet I am to put him under my command. That sounds no different from taming a giant dragon. I don’t know if I could… No, I can’t afford to be whiny. It’s for Akira and Arthur’s sake after all.)
Cain: Oz, chances are that we’ll run into Nova during this mission. I heard that even Mithra was no match for him, so we’ll have to rely on you. I’ll leave him in your capable hand.
I thought I had managed to express the gravity of the threat that was Nova. However, Oz’ expression was unchanged.
Oz: That’s Mithra though.
What he was implying was clear: I’m different from him, no one could defeat me.
Cain: (Wow, that’s so cool).
I genuinely wanted to be like him. No way the spirits would treat him like a baby and watch him while snickering. Arthur too was totally at ease and smiling as he looked up at Oz. In his eyes, there was nothing to worry about if Oz was by his side.
To be honest, I was really envious of Oz.
Owen: Mister Knight!
Out of nowhere came Owen’s voice. From the entrance of the floor where the elevator was, he made a beeline to our direction.
Surprise was all over Arthur and Riquet’s faces, while Oz frowned annoyedly. I swallowed my own startled cry.
His eyes on the verge of tears, Owen immediately looked for me. The way he acted was just like a child. He clung tightly to me.
Owen: Please wait, Mister Knight. Where are you going? Please don’t go *sniffs*
Cain: Owen…
Owen: I heard from Mithra that you’re about to leave for a faraway country, Mister Knight.
Owen anxiously cried out. He held on to me tightly. It didn’t seem that he would let go any time soon.
Riquet: Owen?
Arthur: Owen, what happened? You seem different from usual…
Part 6: The words one looks for when opinions clash
I winced at how confused Riquet and Arthur were. Owen didn’t want anyone to know about the Affliction he got from the Great Calamity. I must find an explanation for the current situation somehow…
Cain: Uhm, looks like he drank too much at Shylock’s bar yesterday.
Riquet: Oh, so he’s drunk?
Cain: Something like that, yeah!
Owen: Uuuh…
Cain: …..
Owen: That’s not true, Mister Knight. I was a proper good boy. I did my best.
Arthur: How unusual. This person who is currently here is certainly Owen, but he is acting like a child.
Oz: It doesn’t seem that this is someone else transforming into him.
Arthur: This reminds me. We still don’t know what Owen’s Affliction from the Great Calamity is. Can it be…
Arthur was too sharp. Once again, I couldn’t help but wince.
Cain: No! I mean, I think we should stop speculating about that.
Puzzled, Arthur looked at me.
Arthur: Is there something you don’t want to tell us?
Cain: No, well…
Riquet: Yesterday too, you looked like you weren’t telling the truth to me somehow. Can it be that you’re hiding something?
Cold sweats broke out on my back. I had to come up with a persuasive lie, but I couldn’t think of anything. When I was in such a state, Owen pulled at my arm and mournfully pleaded.
Owen: Mister Knight, where’re you going? Please take me with you.
Cain: Uhm, taking you with us is…
Owen: Please. I want to go with you, Mister Knight. Don’t leave me alone.
Cain: (Here it comes…)
I had the mother of all winces when faced with those round pleading eyes. Those words were bad news. I had to choose my words and act carefully. In the past, Cerberus had attacked me the moment I said no when Owen asked me not to leave him alone. As I desperately searched for a good way to pacify him in my head, Oz spoke first.
Oz: We won’t take you with us. Stay away from Cain.
Fixing his gaze on Owen, Oz took out his magic focus.
Oz: If you don’t obey, I’ll turn you into a lightning rod.
To Oz, Owen the Northern wizard was an entity who had made countless attempts on his life, so his reaction was understandable.
However, as Oz aimed his fury at him, the childlike Owen gulped, his face white as a sheet. Hiding behind my back, he trembled pitifully.
Owen: Please don’t be mad.
Of course he would be afraid. An angry Oz was really scary, and a child would feel that even more keenly. I couldn’t help feeling sorry for Owen as I looked at him. Apparently, Riquet was of the same mind.
Riquet: Oz, there is no need for you to be so highhanded like that.
Oz: Owen is very good at charade. He would act like he’s hurt to get his opponent to drop their guard then aim at the opening…
Riquet: Maybe he just wants to eat cakes and candies. He has a sweet tooth after all. Right, Owen? Do you want to taste the ‘Noble’s Kiss’?
Owen stared at Riquet. He seemed to be reacting more to Riquet’s smile than actually understanding his words when he nodded repeatedly.
Riquet: It’s just as I thought. If you only want to have some treats, we’ll let you accompany us.
Riquet pulled at Oz’ sleeve in a pleading gesture. Oz’ displeasure was palpable as he said.
Oz: No.
Riquet: Please don’t be so unreasonable. You’re more than 2000 years old already, aren’t you?
Oz: Owen isn’t an opponent I can take lightly.
Oz didn’t relent. He stared at Riquet with his bright, sharp eyes. If that hadn’t been Riquet standing there but another person, they would have burst into tears already.
Riquet: Master Sage said they wanted us to get along with each other. Are you planning to ignore Master Sage’s order, Oz?
Oz: Owen is a Northern wizard.
Riquet: You’ve said that already.
Oz: Don’t let your guard down around him.
Riquet: You’ve said that too.
Arthur: Now, now, please calm down. How about you, Cain? What do you think?
Arthur directed the conversation to me. Looking into his clever blue eyes, I knew that he wasn’t simply asking for my opinion. From how suspicious I acted to Owen’s unusual behaviour, he had noticed all of that and formed his own counsel.
Part 7: I can’t betray my heart
Even so, Arthur trusted me and asked me to tell them what I thought. Understanding that, I felt happy and proud. Owen anxiously looked up at me. I wrapped my arm around his back in a hug and nodded slightly. I had decided not to leave him behind, because I had chosen not to betray my heart. With that resolution, I spoke up.
Cain: Everyone, please listen to me. I know the reason why Owen is acting like this. However, I can’t talk about it since that would mean betraying Owen.
Oz: ….
Cain: He is the one who robbed me of my eye, and someday I’ll settle this quarrel with him. That hasn’t changed. However, in the present, betraying Owen will amount to betraying my heart. That’s why I’d like to take him with us to Western Country, until the original Owen returns.
I noticed that Owen’s back under my arm was slowly getting warmer. The eyes of different colors that were looking at me shined brightly. He was like a child who was given sweets for the first time.
Riquet: Cain…
Arthur: Got it. I agree with Cain’s opinion.
Oz: Arthur…
Arthur: Cain has said that he can’t betray his heart, and I’d like to safeguard it. We wizards use magic from our hearts after all. Besides…
Arthur smiled at Owen. Surprised, Owen looked back at him.
Arthur: I sense no evil from him. Even if he’s lying or putting on an act, to be this convincing at pretending to have an innocent heart means he remembers what it’s like to have one. In that case, I’d like to befriend him.
Oz: ….
Looking like he was sucking on a lemon, Oz didn’t say anything. However, as Riquet pulled at his hand time and time again, he let out a long-suffering sigh.
Oz: I’ll let him be until nightfall. During that time, if he acts up, I’ll expel him to the end of the earth.
Owen: The end of the earth? Where?
Oz: …..
Owen: Is that a scary place?
As Owen innocently asked, Oz fixed his stare on him for a long while. I had the feeling that Oz’ wariness and hostility softened into a more gentle, nostalgia-tinged sentiment. Perhaps he was having a vision of the past, when Arthur had asked him questions a child would ask.
Cain: Don’t worry. As long as you’re a good boy, everything will be okay.
I smiled at Owen to calm him down. He clutched at my arm and nodded happily.
Owen: Yes! That, I can do!
He had the face of a child being praised. Watching such an expression on him, I wanted to make him happy.
It took no time for Arthur and Riquet to warm up to Owen. They chatted about sweets and soon the atmosphere became like that of a festival.
I discreetly approached Oz. As I made a little signal to attract his attention with my fingers, he lowered his head for me. With Oz doing as I wished, I whispered into his ear.
Cain: There’s something I want to tell you and only you. Please don’t leave Owen by himself. If we do that, he’ll release Cerberus to attack us.
Oz took a step back from me. After a long stretch of silence, he muttered curtly.
Oz: That’s what he always does though.
Cain: Ah, yeah. That’s how he typically behaves around you. It must be a pain when someone wants to pick a fight with you every day.
Without thinking, I clapped his back to show my appreciation for him. So powerful people had their own kind of troubles too.
Cain: I can’t tell you the details, but in the present, he’s a good boy and he wants to keep being that. However, if we leave him behind, he’ll get angry and use Cerberus to attack us. I’d like to protect Arthur and Riquet. Can you refrain from blasting Owen to the other side of the world?
Oz looked at me in silence. His gaze seemed to be asking me ‘why would you want to do that?’.
I didn’t know the answer to such a question either. Perhaps this was only a goody-two-shoes act, but my heart had spoken.
Owen was dangerous. However, he was on the same side as us. Furthermore, in the present, he was also a child who deserved protection.
What a mess. I myself was confused. The villain whom I should defeat as a knight and the helpless child whom I should protect were both in the same vessel.
Oz: So things will be fine as long as we don’t leave him alone. I see.
Cain: I think so, yeah.
Oz: Understood.
Cain: I’m glad to hear that. Thank you.
I let out a sigh in relief and clapped Oz’ back. As I was doing that, I heard the voices of the Western wizards. There was Akira’s voice too. I could sense them taking in a sharp breath of surprise as they walked in our direction. Apparently they had noticed that Owen was different from usual.
Akira: Good morning, Cain.
I held out my hand as Akira’s footsteps got closer. Then came the sound of their hand hi-fiving mine. Without saying a word, they asked with their eyes ‘is everything okay?’.
‘All is well,’ I replied by nodding. Looking visibly relieved, they went to have a chat with Owen. They too were aware that Owen didn’t want people to know about his Affliction from the Calamity and were worried about him, so they decided to accompany him during conversation.
Akira was always so helpful like that, even though they arrived in a world they knew nothing of all alone. From time to time, I thought about the world Akira should return to and the day when that would happen. And I thought about me and the way I had completely forgotten how the face of the previous Sage looked like.
Part 8: The Sage and the Sacrificum
[Inside the elevator]
With a clang, the elevator moved.
Earlier, as soon as Owen and I got in the elevator with the Central and Western wizards, it groaned shakily. Therefore, we decided that the Western wizards and I should take the first turn to travel to our destination.
The little Sacri-something perched on my shoulder. From time to time, it floated around or touched my shoulder or leaned against me. As I looked at the little Sacri-something, Chloe got curious about it and smiled.
Chloe: Master Sage, what a cutie! Where is it from?
Akira: Oh, the twins gave it to me. They said it would act as my protective ward and sacrifice.
Shylock: Oh, so it’s a Sacrificum.
Murr: I wonder if the twins would hear us when we gossip behind their backs.
Chloe: A Sacrificum? So it’s a living being? What’s its name?
Akira: Uhm, I don’t plan to name it since it isn’t my pet.
Chloe: Really? But ‘Sacrificum’ is kinda unwieldy, don’t you think? May I call it Sacri?
The deepest corner of my heart tingled with an aching sweetness as I heard Chloe’s suggestion. It was like a thorn was pulled from my flesh. I felt at once pain, a burden being off my chest, regret, and relief.
Akira: …Sure.
Chloe: Yay! Little Sacri, nice to meet you!
Chloe reached out with both his hands and cupped Sacri’s face, then ruffled it affectionately. Sacri stayed still the whole time Chloe petted it, its eyes half-closed like it was smiling. The cuteness was off the charts. I wanted to do the same thing but couldn’t bring myself to for some reason.
As I stayed paralyzed, Sacri lay down and meowed.
Akira: (Aww, that’s so cute. Looks like it loves being petted? Good for you, Sacri).
As I looked up with such a thought in my head, the wall of the elevator was in front of me. Every time I used the elevator, I remembered the first time I came to this world.
Akira: (The first person I met in that mysterious elevator was…)
Murr: Master Sage? What’s the matter?
Akira: Ah… Uhm, it’s nothing.
Chloe: Is Owen alright? Did he become like a child after eating some strange sweets?
Murr: That sounds just like a joke! He ate a candy and then started acting weirdly?!
Rustica: Don’t worry. Lord Oz is with him.
Shylock: Let’s see. Just as one can’t guarantee that there’ll be no problem because he’s an adult, one can’t say it for certain that problem will definitely arise because he’s a child.
Chloe: Huh? Explain it to me again.
Shylock: Riquet and Owen are excited about the confection you recommended to them, Chloe.
Chloe: Ehehe, it’d be nice if everyone loves my favorite treat. Do you like it, Shylock?
Shylock: Yes.
Murr: It’s the ‘Noble’s Kiss’, you know.
Rustica: That’s indeed a confection I enjoy. How about you, Master Sage?
Akira: I think I’ll like it. I love sweets in general.
The Western wizards took how unusually Owen acted in stride without doubts or suspicion. It was just like them to be so comfortable around abnormality. That was what crossed my mind as I joined in the conversation with them.
Akira: (I just remembered. Bradley said he wanted us to search for Murr’s labs. I wonder what will come of that talk. Murr’s labs… Does Shylock know about them?)
As I stole a glance at Shylock’s profile, Murr enthusiastically called out.
Murr: Soon we’ll arrive in our destination!
Part 9: A colourful encounter
Murr: Arri~val! Western Country~!
[In front of the elevator]
We arrived at the Tower of Western Country.
Rustica: The wind feels so nice, doesn’t it? I’m glad that the weather is favorable here too.
Chloe: The clouds are dark over there though. Perhaps it’s raining.
Chloe: Oh? What’s…?
Chloe’s attention was captured by something as he was pointing to the dark sky. Something was flapping about as it crossed the sky.
Akira: Is that a tile from the roof of someone’s house?
The little dot fluttered about wildly then made a sudden dive. Besides the red, there was yellow on it too. What I thought was carried away by the wind was actually something that moved by its own will.
Akira: (It’s going in our direction?)
Rustica: Is that a bird?
Murr: No, a human!
Chloe: A human?!
Shylock: He meant that’s a human magically transformed into a bird, I guess?
That was why the bird wasn’t used to flying. I glanced at Sacri on my shoulder. Bathing in the wind, it casually made itself comfortable. If Sacri had no reaction, then there was likely nothing dangerous to us. I supposed it was the bird whose life was at risk, not ours.
As the colourful bird looked around in apparent panic, it was hit by a strong gust of wind and soared into the sky. Then, with its wings weakly folded away, it made a nosedive onto the ground.
Akira: Oh no…
Chloe: We must help it!
Chloe called up his broom and mounted it. Next to him, Murr raised his right hand.
Murr: Leave it to me! Eanul Lambrul!
As Murr cast his spell, a gentle light wrapped around the colourful bird, which was then carried to where we were standing as it softly floated in the air.
Chloe: What a relief! Thanks, Murr!
Murr: You’re welcome!
I carefully reached out with both my hands towards the colourful bird wrapped in light. The bird was immediately dropped into my arm with a dull thud.
???: …….
The colourful bird was heavier, softer, and warmer than it looked. However, its wings were spread out and its back was getting colder.
Chloe: Is it okay?
Rustica: What beautiful wings of rainbow colours. Maybe this is my bride…
Shylock: It’s likely that this bird is not. Oh look.
The bird slowly opened its eyes. Suddenly it flew up. Flapping its wings wildly, the bird began to chirp.
Akira: It seems that the bird wants to tell us something. Could you please transform it back to human form?
Murr: Sure! Eanul lambrul!
Murr cast his spell. However, the colourful bird stayed the same even as a faint light appeared around it.
Murr: What?
Shylock: Perhaps I should give it a try. Invibelled.
His pipe in hand, Shylock cast his spell. Smoke from the pipe curled around the colourful bird. However, the bird was still a bird.
Shylock: Oh dear….
Part 10: What has reached our ears
Rustica: The magic certainly holds very firmly. It must have been cast by an expert in magical transformation.
Chloe: You can’t lift the spell either, Rustica?
Rustica: If it’s impossible for Shylock then it’s impossible for me. Perhaps even Lord Oz can’t do anything about this.
Akira: Even Oz?
Shylock: The line of magic for transformation or changing one’s appearance is of a different nature from the magic Oz and the Northern wizards have aptitude for. We all know that Chloe has better make-up skills than Oz and Mithra. This is just like that.
Akira: I see… But does this mean this person will have to stay a bird forever?
Perhaps the colourful bird understood what I was saying, because it jolted upright as if in shock.
???: …….!
Right after that, it collapsed like a sack of stones onto my palms.
Rustica: Oh, that’s a citizen of Western Country alright.
Shylock: It does seem to be the case.
Murr: One of the legs is spasming even. Excellent attention to details in self-expression.
Chloe: For some reason I like this bird already. Everyone, is there anything we can do for it?
Murr: Hmmm.
Murr: Eureka! Let me give it a try one more time!
Akira: Please do!
Murr: Here I go! Eanul Lambrul!
A bright light covered the colourful bird just like before. The bird woke up and chirped repeatedly as if to make an urgent plea. Then something extraordinary happened. Within seconds, the mournful cry of the bird gradually made way to…
The voice of a human.
???: …Da—
Chloe: Oh!
???: …Damn…
???: Damn those accursed wizards for turning me into this shape!
The Western wizards: ……
???: I’ll never let this go! What on earth are they planning to do to my Liliana?! I told her it was a bad idea to go to the Royal Palace! Aaah, I must go rescue Liliana….!
???: This lot here seem more tolerable at least. I should use them to turn me back to human somehow.
???: Hey, what are you staring dumbly at? Get back to work! Be useful for once in…
???: What?! I’m talking like normal? But I’ve been chirping all this time?! Does this mean everyone here understood everything I’ve been saying?!
Shylock: Yes.
???: ……
???: Peep… peep…
Chloe: It’s useless to do that, you know. Sorry, we’re just a bunch of accursed wizards like you said.
???: No, no, no, I’m not saying that, I’m not saying that.
Rustica: So, you’re going to make use of us and have us turn you back to human, apparently.
???: I’d never say something so ugly like ‘using’ someone. What I mean is, I would be delighted if you are so generous as to lend me a hand.
Rustica: Unfortunately, I have bad news for you. We can’t return you to normal.
???: Aaah, please don’t play a prank on me like that.
Murr: He’s telling the truth though! Just like how it’s 100% true that we have a friend who loves fried chicken!
???: Stop, stop, stop, don’t talk so cruelly. Oh, the dignitary over here seems full of compassion! May I ask for your name?
As soon as the beak of the bird got close to me, Sacri slowly batted at the bird with its front legs.
???: Hey, cat! Stop being naughty! I’m only asking for their name! Let’s act like gentlemen, shall we?
Keeping a close eye on Sacri, the colourful bird fluttered around me.
???: Understood? Put your claws away! I’m not trying to take your place as their pet.
???: I have kept you waiting. Pardon my rudeness. Allow me one more try. Could you tell me what your name is?
Akira: Uhm, I’m Akira.
???: What a beautiful name! The sound of it gives off such a gentle impression!
Chloe: It isn’t just your impression. Master Sage is really gentle and kind.
???: Master Sage?
Shylock: This is Master Sage, who was summoned from another world. And we are the Sage’s Wizards.
???: What did you say? Looks like I’ve hit the jackpot after all!
The colourful bird flew up and made a gesture like a bow in front of me.
???: O Great Sage, please have mercy on this helpless soul. I’m Gregory Perch, a retainer of the Great Noble House Cortese of Western Country. A great danger has befallen my master Lady Liliana.
Akira: Lady Liliana…
Gregory: Your Eminence, please lend me your strength. I have the misfortune of being turned into a bird. Even so, please aid me in the rescue of Lady Liliana!
Card story: The Outcome of the Invitations
Cain: Want to have a dance with me?
Oz: ………
Oz: Are you talking to me?
Cain: Obviously. I’ve just heard an interesting legend from the young locals. If you dance around the bonfire, you’ll have one whole year full of luck and happiness. Since we happen to be here on this occasion, let’s give it a try.
Oz: If you want to dance then go ask someone else. I’ll stay where I am.
Cain: Come on, don’t say that.
Oz: ….Why do you want to invite me to dance that much? You and I are a poor match in both stature and temperament.
Cain: Haha. We aren’t dancing at a ball in the palace. No need to overthink it. I’d like you to have a good year. It’s simple as that. You’ve been taking care of us during missions as well as training, so it’s natural to wish for good fortune to smile upon you, you know.
Oz: ……..
Cain: Of course, if you don’t want to then you don’t have to. Just, give it a thought, please. Take your time. I’ll go fetch some food now. My stomach has been complaining for a while. Do you want something too?
Oz: I’m fine. You’d better hurry if you’re hungry. Food at a festival runs out quickly.
Cain: Right. I’d better be going then!
[A bit later]
Villager: Hey, bro! Come dance with us!
Cain: Me? I can join you guys?
[A while later]
Cain: Ahaha, you guys are great dancers!
Villager: Bro, join us for the next dance!
Cain: Ooh! Huh?
Oz: ……
Cain: Sorry I made you wait for me! I forgot the time when I danced with those guys.
Oz: I wasn’t waiting for you though.
Cain: Eh, really? I thought you were trying to get my attention with your eyes. Oh, so you are finally tempted to join the dance?
Oz: What I want to ask is, you left to get food, didn’t you?
Cain: Food?
Cain: Oh! I forgot! Ahaha, dancing was so fun so that slipped my mind.
Oz: ……
Oz: You’ve been moving around a lot. Go and have a proper meal. It’ll be too late when you collapse.
Cain: Hahaha, so you’re worried for me. Thanks. Well then, I’ll go and get food for real this time. That’s right! Why don’t you go with me?
Oz: Why?
Cain: Maybe I’ll get invited to dance again, so it’ll be great if you’re there to remind me to eat. Besides that, I simply want to have a chat with you. Please indulge me?
Oz: ……. Finish your meal first. I’ll chat with you when you’re done.
Cain: Yes, sir!
Card episode: Eating the World’s Strongest Sugar
Cain: *munching* Hmm?
Cain: Oh hi, Master Sage. You’re here for lunch?
Akira: Yes, I’m pretty hungry already. Are you eating wizard’s sugar?
Cain: Yeah, Oz gave me these after our self-training session. They’ve been a big help because I moved around more than usual today. Thanks to them, I feel even more energetic than before the training.
Akira: They are sugar from Oz after all. Perhaps it’s his way to say ‘good work’.
Cain: I thought so at first, but Riquet got the sugar too. You know, we wizards of the Manor love to recreate the customs of Halloween. My guess is Oz gives out the sugar because that’s how he understands the occasion.
Akira: I see. If that’s the case then Oz is enjoying Halloween in his own way. I’m glad.
Cain: I know, right? It made me happy too, so I ate most of the sugar I got in one go. But Nero who was around us smiled somewhat awkwardly, in a “those are the most powerful sugar in the world, many people would die to have them” way.
Akira: That’s true… You really shouldn’t eat such sugar so recklessly.
Cain: Yeah, so I’ll save the rest of the batch and only eat one piece at a time. Thanks to Oz’ sugar, I’ll have enough energy for anything even in the afternoon!
